So there's this article in the latest Wired about how manga is dominating the U.S. market.

I cried a little bit.

It was neat to see AK of Troy in there though, since I used to "hang out" at Toriyama's World.

Back in my darker days that I never want to talk about ever.

Hopefully these bookstore aisle blocking, freeloading, shitty manga reading kids will grow into a better appreciation of comics like I did.

Or at least put down that fucking Naruto book and read something like Monster.

    Doesn't shock me.

    I don't buy comic related goods at Barnes and Noble, but I usually see whats new in the TPB section, and lo and behold theres at least five or six kids going to town on those gay little books.

    Yeah, I took my cousin to get some books with a giftcard he had and he picked up Naruto and a Halo 3 guidebook. I asked him if he ever read anything from the other sections and he looked at me like I was nuts.

    Story aside (given that I don't get far enough to find out the story) I've just always really disliked the art styles of anime and manga.

    I know it's a big part of geek cred to be able to go "X Anime was so sweet!!1", but I just can't do it.

    Just like anything, some of it is better than others. The problem is when you come across someone whos's all "anime is superior".

    I think we covered the gist of this thread several months ago. I mean, what can you do? The kids like the manga. They think it's new and cool and groundbreaking. They think American comics are dull and repetitive. I mean, they're wrong, but the perception's taken hold and this generation is pretty much lost. Happily, they'll eventually grow out of it because, seriously, you can only read DBZ clones for so long. On the downside, they'll still be woefully ignorant of all the good that's going on in the non Japanese comic scene. They're too cool for it now and by the time they've had their fill of manga, they'll still have their negative (and wrong) opinions of comics.

    Also, I defy anyone to say that there are no good manga. There are plenty that are just as good as Watchmen.

    Initial D is good up until the Project D arc. Then I just stopped caring. This mostly applies to manga in general now, though.

    Much like anime, the market's become over-saturated.

    Is it normal Mega Man, Mega Man X, or that Mega Man Battle Network/Later iterations of that series? I wasn't aware that any of them were good stories.

    At the simplest level, the Mega Man games are a story about a robot that kills other robots and dismembers them in order to use parts from their corpse to kill other robots.

    And isn't that the best sort of story?
