Internet Router Help?

I have a 2003 Dell that I'm trying to get hooked up to a wireless Internet connection on a NetGear router. The computer can and does detect the network I'm trying to patch into, but the signal is incredibly weak and varied (it ranges from 1 to 34 %, depending on where I place the NetGear USB drive on my desk). I'm used to the traditional phoneline way of connecting to the 'Net, and have no idea what to do to make this connection work.

I have a brand new NetGear ISB router and all of my housemates (and a couple neighbors) have been able to read the signal and get internet access with no problems. Please advise.

    Clear as mud.

If you connect the PC directly to the router with a patch cord do you get internets?

Might sound dumb, but make sure you are trying to connect to the right network. Sometimes Windows will try to "help" you by connecting automatically to the nearest wifi with no security. So you might actually be connecting to your neighbors default "linksys" open network signal, instead of your home network's SSID.

So everyone else but you connects just fine to the router wirelessly.

Is it possible to throw a wireless card from a computer that you know connects fine into yours?

Also, is there anything near where you have your computer that could be interfering with the signal?
