    How do you know?

I work at Infinity Ward and I asked somebody :)

Seriously? Fucking awesome. Go hug the guy that said that for me.

It actually came up in a meeting so I'll have to hug fifty people.

It's okay though, I'll tell 'em somebody on the internet told me to. :P

    Whoah, wait a sec.
Didn't Gaz get shot in the head point-blank on the bridge at the end?
    .

    end-game.
thats what i thought, i thought that was gaz getting shot in the head, but i guess wasn't looking close enough.

Also, a really great first mission/intro.
The sinking barge? When you finally make it back to the deck, and all you see is a wave of ocean. Total feeling of dread amplified by the fact that I fell a little behind. But when I rounded that corner, saw the surface of the water, knowing the ship is about to capsize... and then leaping onto the helicopter?

    HELL YEAH.

I remember the debate over BioShock intro versus Half Life intro. Neither introduce the action as well as that.

    first mission spoilers
i completely agree, running out and just seeing a massive wave i was like 'holy shit...' then *JUST* making the jump, and almost slipping off... awesome, just utterly awesome.

This is basically the videogame equivalent of Transformers (this summer's movie I mean). It's really entertaining and great to look at but in the end it's pretty shallow. There really isn't much to the gameplay.

(I'm talking about the single player here.)

There are lots of awesome things that happen in this game. I wont mention any of them for fear of spoiling people, but those of you playing it know what I'm talking about. I can't help but notice though, that all of the awesome things that happen are either things that are shown to you, or things the game makes you do. It's kind of just... the antithesis of what I think awesome things in videogames should be. Like, in Halo 3 when awesome things happen it's because you did them, and you chose to do them. "Holy shit I just shotgunned that guy in the face then stuck that other guy with a grenade then I hijacked that Ghost and killed two guys with it!" In COD4 (and the other CODs, actually), you're kind of just sitting there watching the game play itself - get behind cover, zoom in, kill a couple guys, rinse, repeat. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good in there and I'm really enjoying it, I just think that aspect of it could be better.

I picked up the game this evening and am enjoying it immensely. Favorite moments thus far:
1.) The intro with the sinking tanker. Talk about cinematic and engaging! Bravo IW! Bravo!

2.) Annhiliating enemy troops in the most brutal fashiong with the AC-130. That was satisfying beyond belief.

I have to say, I'm really enjoying the SAS components of the story so far. The force recon parts aren't bad, but the SAS missions seem to appeal to me more for some reason.

everything was obviously very heavily scripted in this game but i enjoyed it nonetheless

not sure how the sp campaign's replayability will be though. i already know every event and things will always turn out the same

so is the multiplayer as good as it's suppose to be.

i'm just going off of Tycho's review - i'm gonna pick up the PC version sometime soon, maybe tomorrow.
The Multiplayer is the best part of tha game....Hands down best FPS I have played on a console. I traded my Halo 3 in to pick it up for the PS3....since all my friends got it for the PS3 and the gameplay is the same. I played the beta on 360 and have been waiting for this baby.

Beat the game in six hours.

It is the best 360 game I have played all year and is a very strong contender for Game of the Year. I literally felt like I was playing Black Hawk Down or some other badass movie and was on the edge of my seat. I kept gasping with awe at some of the things that happened. Fucking incredible game. Now I gotta try the multiplayer.

The awesome things you're talking about are a result of setting, not gameplay specifically. For example, in Halo you can stick a grenade to a guy. That single mechanic leads to a lot of badass moments. The modern setting brings a different set of mechanics to the table- things like the Javelin, or the importance of bullet penetration, which leads to a different kind of badassery. You're a soldier, not a superhero (and let's be honest- Gordon Freeman and Master Chief are way more superhero than soldier). In terms of story, Halo 3 gives you no more choice in what you're doing than any other shooter (with the notable exception of games like Deus Ex).

In CoD4, the intent was to immerse the player in a wider conflict; to expand the scope of the war so that the player doesn't feel like the fate of the world is on their shoulders alone (for better or worse). It's a tightrope, to be sure, making a player feel like their contribution matters without making them the Last Hope of Humanity. The storytelling in Halo and Half Life, for example, relies heavily on the fact that only the player can do what needs doing. That's not the reality of modern warfare, however- soldiers are soldiers and while their individual efforts are important, there's no "I" in "team".

I hope that makes sense. It's late and I'm tired.

Hey guys...question for the PS3 version. A buddy of mine has kids and doesn't like what sometimes comes over voicechat (it can be bad sometimes). He has been turning his Bluetooth headset on, then setting it down on his coffee table so that the voicechat doesn't come over his speakers where his children can here it. It's just an annoyance...but I thought that there was a way to disable voicechat. The closest thing I could see was in the Multiplayer/Online Options, there was a place to adjust the voice volume. I was thinking he could try turning that all the way down. But when he did want to use voicechat he would have to remember to go back in and turn it back up again. Is there an easier way? Thanks!!

I can't comment on how to do it on the PS3 version, but yeah, I've heard a lot of stupidity so far playing online. :P There are tons of people constantly using the N-word all the time, and I've had a bunch of angry teenagers. This one kid kept shouting "Allahu ackbar!" the entire match.

I also love it when people don't turn off their mics, so you constantly hear that static the entire game; and no matter how many times you politely ask them to turn it off, they never do. The stereotype people are getting a little tiresome, too - it's all "nigga" and "dawg". And how about the people who have to complain after every death? I just want to strangle them!

Speaking of stupid people; I was searching for a match, and then two Matched Players came into the room. These two redneck sounding guys were then arguing about what Matched Player means. First they just kept shouting, "What the hell is matched player?!"... "Does more than one person have that gamertag?!".

I agree the multiplayer is where it's at. I could care less about the single player to be honest. I normally don't like FPS on a console. Ever since I played Counterstrike and Team Fortress I have been hooked on PC FPS....loved SOF II, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2 Special Forces....then 2142....and lately Team Fortress 2. Well, I would love to stay and keep talking about how great the multiplayer is...but I have to get back on the PS3.....see ya!!

Hmm. The biggest mistake I see in optimizing PC games is running too high-rez- folks think that because their video card and monitor support 1900x1200, they should run it in 1900x1200. That's like HD on steroids. Unfortunately LCDs and their native resolutions make running PC games at a more normal resolution a dodgy prospect; you've just got to find the right balance between quality settings and frame size. I can tell you right now, cranking the resolution up and quality settings down is almost never a satisfactory solution.

Right, gameplay only possible in that setting. Of course you couldn't have Soap sticking people with grenades and stuff like that. The modern setting in COD4 does do a lot of good things for it, the tech, as you said, is cool, and the guns feel really good. The best feeling realistic guns in any shooter probably. The Javelin? Yeah, it looks cool. I like using it. I don't really think it's interesting gameplay though - point the reticule for a couple seconds, pull the trigger, and that's it. I do quite like bullet penetration though, it's made me think like I never really have before in a shooter. "Oh yeah, he's behind a fence, not just misc. cover X."

As for your second paragraph, yeah. I agree with all of that. Not really sure what it has to do with my original post though. We can blame the tiredness for that though, get to bed!

Only way to do it. Waste of perfectly good air support if it kills one guy and then eats some RPGs.

All these people I meet on Live like to rack up 7 kills and then take a smoke break after calling the helo. That's the perfect time to attack, while the enemy is nice and distracted.

Er, no awesome player moments? Try leading instead of following the leader, sure, it's insubordination, but damn if it doesn't feel just right when you throw a flash grenade in a room and go in for a clean up.

Also, beating the game on Veteran, and some parts seem just impossible.

I'm finding this very very frustrating, it wouldn't be nearly as hard if Veteran wasn't such a nade fest. It seems to me that the AI almost have an unlimited supply of grenades they can effectively shuff up your ass around every second corner.

Also instead of actually throwing the grenades they simply teleport them to your position.

In my mind the gameplay really suffers because of this aspect of the game.

A jewel case! As opposed to paper sleeves or a standup plastic DVD case. It's been ages since I've seen a jewel case.

Oh, it's the PC version? That makes a bit more sense.
