yeah, sometimes the nades are goddamn ridiculous. I've learned to step out, pop a few dudes, and wait to throw the 3-4 grenades back that were thrown at me.
I think that bullet penetration is my favorite new gameplay aspect of CoD 4. Like Bruin said, it really makes you think differently about how you move through the levels and how to get to guys behind cover. I also liked that it's introduced right up front in the training level. Other games like Stranglehold have pulled off destructible cover quite well, but here the bullet penetration model just feels right, and once I got my head around it was awesome.
Also, the MP has hooked me like no MP has in a long time. I enjoy how fast paced it is, as I can just get in quickly and play one match and still feel like I had a good time. The leveling up is going to keep me playing for a long time.
I haven't tried Arcade mode yet, but I'm looking forward to it after having seen the video.

This. Exactly this.
I have only had time for a few matches (played a ton in beta though) but it is so much damn fun. And being free of achievement oppression is the icing on the cake.
Hey guys...question for the PS3 version. A buddy of mine has kids and doesn't like what sometimes comes over voicechat (it can be bad sometimes). He has been turning his Bluetooth headset on, then setting it down on his coffee table so that the voicechat doesn't come over his speakers where his children can here it. It's just an annoyance...but I thought that there was a way to disable voicechat. The closest thing I could see was in the Multiplayer/Online Options, there was a place to adjust the voice volume. I was thinking he could try turning that all the way down. But when he did want to use voicechat he would have to remember to go back in and turn it back up again. Is there an easier way? Thanks!!
Yeah, the bullet penetration thing is tits. Love lighting up a small room by just blasting through the walls with my M4. The destructible environment is amazing. The piles of bricks being shot, so amazingly done.
One funny thing though, I shot a lcd monitor with meh gun with 1 bullet, and it just kinda wobbled and knocked back a few inches. lols. I don't hate on them though, they've done enough to make the game awesome.

I'm not sure that there's an easier way if he wants to keep switching between using it and not using it. The options that exist are optimized for either using it or disabling it. I think there's another way to disable chat in the XMB? I can't remember though as I haven't had a need to do it. Sorry I can't be of more help.

In CoD4, the intent was to immerse the player in a wider conflict; to expand the scope of the war so that the player doesn't feel like the fate of the world is on their shoulders alone (for better or worse). It's a tightrope, to be sure, making a player feel like their contribution matters without making them the Last Hope of Humanity. The storytelling in Halo and Half Life, for example, relies heavily on the fact that only the player can do what needs doing. That's not the reality of modern warfare, however- soldiers are soldiers and while their individual efforts are important, there's no "I" in "team".
As far as I'm concerned, all of the Call of Duty (okay, I've only really played 1, 2, and 4) series have been this way.
It's what makes them so appealing and always makes me want to go out and shake the hand of every war veteran I ever see.
Illicit an emotional response and speak to the human condition. CoD thou art ... art.

All of them have done this, but I think 4 does it far better.
COD2, you were usually the only squad on the map, and you don't hear much about what else is happening. There's a few exceptions, but a lot of them weren't that great. The Normandy landing, for example: Nice huge bloodbath on the beach, but once you're up the cliff, you never see an ally or hear a gunshot that isn't from you or at you the rest of the mission. I honestly think that if most people didn't know the scale of the war already, the game wouldn't do a good job of conveying it.
COD4, most missions, there's other squads that come in with you and go off to pursue their own objectives (the fact that most missions show the approach instead of just starting out on the ground helps a lot). You hear radio chatter and sometimes even shouting from them, often get updates on their progress, see them fighting or hear their gunfire constantly, and if you look around while you're moving between important points, you'd be surprised how many times you get a chance to help them out by picking off enemies from behind or above. The missions never seem to reward or penalize doing so or not, but its a nice touch.
I also like that COD4 doesn't sanitize things. COD2, you never see a concentration camp, the only time you find prisoners of war the Germans that you didn't already kill surrender them and you spare their lives. One of the most horrific of wars, but you don't see the horror unless it happened in Stalingrad or Normandy. COD4?
That first person execution did it for me. Shocked the living shit out of me, even though I saw it coming a mile away.
For the sake of argument, I wish you would be a bit specific. Cause I don't really feel the same way. Granted, I haven't beaten the game yet, but...
There's been plenty of times where I was left completely alone in figuring out what to do. One of my favorite levels so far was storming the TV station. It practically throws you out there by your lonesome and expects you to make the best decisions in going from Point A to Point B. This is amplified by my reluctance to let my fellow soldiers die. Maybe it's a strike of nationalism or pride or whatever, but if I'm playing and the soldier in front of me takes a bullet and dies, I'll restart the mission and try to keep him alive.
Another good example of that level is when you're in that one room with all of the desks and computers, and there's a second floor that the enemy holds and uses RPGs. I had to have played that section at least a dozen times trying to figure out how to best approach the situation without getting blasted.
In COD4 (and the other CODs, actually), you're kind of just sitting there watching the game play itself - get behind cover, zoom in, kill a couple guys, rinse, repeat. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good in there and I'm really enjoying it, I just think that aspect of it could be better.
Of course, your mileage may vary, but...
There's been several times where I've had to take down a couple of guys with my rifle, notice several baddies in the distance, switch to a sniper, take them out, and then throw a flash bang and an approaching troop to allow my fellow soldiers to take them out.
Or that level where you start off on the highway and you're ambushed. Snipe, storm the building, then use this big mounted gun against some more baddies...
I think what I'm trying to say here is that I respectfully disagree.
COD4, most missions, there's other squads that come in with you and go off to pursue their own objectives.
That, and I've had reinforcements rush in after heavy losses plenty of times.
So, a few multiplayer questions.
What assault rifle are you guys using? I'm torn between the M16 and the M4. I like the M16 because it has some range on it, and will put the baddies down quicker than the M4, but burst fire gets me killed in a shoot out. I find it's better suited for medium to long range action and not assault.
On the other hand, the M4 is perfect for rolling into a building and taking people out (next to the UZI), but it just doesn't seem to have the stopping power that the M16 has. Of course, some people COULD have juggernaut turned on, but I've realized that unless I make clean chest and head shots with the M4, I'll have to spend nearly a full clip.
Also. Claymore's don't detonate via proximity? I got that in my head once when playing the BETA and storming the tower on Crash. An enemy sniper was perched up there, so I figured I'd just go get him. He had a claymore set on the stairs that blew up as I went over it.
They are proximity. Also, directional - you have to walk in front of it to set it off.
I sort of wish they self detonated... In single player, at the end of the Chernobyl mission, I set all 8 of mine in the exact positions to not get triggered, and they just sat there mocking me in their uselessness during that bloody awful firefight.
Don't worry about using the "perfect" weapon. They all have their merits, so you just have to find one that suits you. Personally, I do use the M4A1, but when I get the unlocks for them, I'll probably switch to the G36 and the P90. I need the P90. I'm level 19 in the 360 version, and my PC copy comes today, so I'll have to start from the bottom again for that one. :P
Speaking of the PC version, does it have a friends list? I'd like to add some of you for some games.

Any way to set direction? What way are they "facing" if I just place it?
I ask, because this morning I was playing Crossfire and had myself a nice little nest, but occasionally would get snuck up on and killed. So I tried placing a claymore. Didn't help, unless he disarmed it. Is that possible? Is there a timer on it before it arms?
pretty sure it faces the direction you drop it. so looking ahead, it would kill someone walking toward you. there is a bomb disposal perk that lets the enemy notice your bombs and he can disarm it. but i doubt anyone takes it, cause i haven't seen much use of claymores/c4 at all.

Can you fire on them to disable them, then?
I'm just trying to figure out why I had a bullet in my skull instead of him lying in pieces on the floor. :-P

Play some search and destroy. C4 and Claymores = Key to victory.

Well I can't remember ever really having to figure out what to do, it's always pretty much point A to point B with little to deviation. Even the TV station, I guess there's a couple options rooms, but you still don't have a whole lot of options. Like I think if you watch a bunch of different people play through the game they would all look the same. That's fine though, if that's the kind of game it is. I have no problem with that in and of itself.
I say it's shallow because there's basically nothing to the gameplay except how well you can point and shoot. And the enemy AI, even on harder difficulty settings, is pretty stupid. And uninteresting to fight.
Don't get me wrong though, I am enjoying COD4. I feel like I'm coming off as hating this game. I think it's good, I just have a few complaints about it.
Just one quick note about multi-player. It is way more fun if you're in a group of people you know. If you form a party you will always be in your party for every match and it is way better than just hopping into random match with random people. I think 5 or 6 of us grouped up for a good hour last night and we had a blast shoosting people.
My PC version just arrived! I have it for 360 and PC, so I can probably play with most of you. I'm going to go level up a little bit in the PC version right now, after it installs, if anyone wants to play.

I was just thinking the same thing. If you're looking for innovative gameplay mechanic, its not going to be found here. I mean its current competitors are Crysis (marine in super ninja tech suit raping all) and Halo (super marine in tech suit raping all with sticky nades and boom sticks)...so I guess I see your point. Its just how you get the experience. I mean, Vegas wasn't all that innovative to me either (save for the cover grabbing), but it was exactly what it should've been. A shooter ^_^.

We had more than a blast, WE DESTROYED.
I believe the setup was:
Myself
Shlank
CableCarrier (woo, for tf2 pc familiar faces)
Wienke
and my R6V playing cousin from AZ, vboz
First some TDM was done. Most the time we had good team movement. Everyone moved as a group, and if one person died, they would sprint back to the group after respawn. I love how the arrows blink when someone is talking, makes it much easier to locate teamates.
After some warming up we went to search and destroy. Which is essentially CS rules in COD4. Plant the bomb, or defend from bomb planting, no respawns, FF was off too. COD4 is way more fun without being paranoid of some goon respawning behind you. A more slow paced, methodical approach is better used here. Well placed C4s and Claymore can make or break the entire game. Oh and the XP is worth a shit ton on Search and Destroy.

Sheeeeeeep
But that brings up an issue I had yesterday.
I tried to join AshDrake yesterday, and it kept telling me that my playlist wasn't up to date. Then after that, it kept telling me I had to have a network connection. I was able to sign into live just fine. Rebooting my modem and router fixed the problem, though.

I will be on later but I need to finish this damned Campaign. (Which I dont want to ever end)
Also I added PA in my clantag, I suggest you all do the same, or die.:x
He yells at you if you don't put it on. True story.
Apparently all the really really good players play Search and Destroy though. Holy shit. It's like graduating from Team Deathmatch to Ass Rape Central. Especially for someone like me who has a High Kill/ High Death ratio going on. Kinda weird how that happens.
I KNOW there are more PAers out there playing this game. I only have like 3 of you guys on my buddy list.
After playing TF2 on 360 though, all I have to say is that the CoD4 net code is like 1000x better. I never even got to play with fellow PAers because I always get "this game is no longer accepting players" blah blah blah when you KNOW that shit has like 10/12. So I guess this means I'm retiring from TF2. Oh well.
Edit: In the future we need to look into playing in one of these gaming leagues or something. That'd be pretty sweet.
I picked this up yesterday for the 360 and I'm just having an absolute blast on Live.

I dunno why, but I absolutely blow at sniping in this game. Any of the other weapons and I'm fine, but when I pick up a sniper rifle I'll do horribly for the whole game. I think my favorite class so far is some variation of the special ops class. Submachinegun and explosives = win.

Heh. Complete opposite of me. Most sniper rifles I suck with. Halo 3 I tend to do a bit better, but not necessarily. For some reason, CoD4 I manage to get good kills. Probably because it's easy to pick off people posted up. Not moving = easy kill.
I've been pretty much playing on nothing but the realism servers and its AWESOME! (till Pvt Numbnuts drops a nade and wipes out half his team) More people use iron sights. A lot less nade spam due to FF. Not to mention less run and gun.
I haven't even seen a reason to go past the M16 yet : \
I've got the fully upgraded M16A4/ACOG and I don't see any reason to choose another gun other than to unlock stuff.
For instance, it just feels wrong to use an M16 when you're not playing as the USMC or the SAS. Even then, I'm sure the SAS would use the SA80 before the M16 so hell if I know why that's not in this game.
I usually get tagged by some jerk with a M4 or M16 and the red dot or another sniper altogether. I've seen very few people use the AK so far or the RPD. Which is a little disheartening because I loves the RPD. I think I'll swap to the G3 when I finally get ahold of it though, right mix of power and range to be really useful.

G3 + red dot = awesomesauce. It already does great damage per shot but tack on the damage perk and wow its great.

I'm not 100% sure but I really doubt it.
There's always Xfire.
Pokemon Pearl Friend Code : 3995 4211 1183
Can you fire on them to disable them, then?
I'm just trying to figure out why I had a bullet in my skull instead of him lying in pieces on the floor. :-P
Play some search and destroy. C4 and Claymores = Key to victory.
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
*slaps head*
I think it was C4 that I was placing, not claymores.
Sigh.
I'm retarded.
I don't even think I've unlocked Claymores yet. Hmmm.
also I wonder if I can register my copy on steam when its released there
Well I can't remember ever really having to figure out what to do, it's always pretty much point A to point B with little to deviation.
Apparently it's down!
I just got it and it's down! Dammit! I guess I'll go play some of it on the 360. Does anyone want to party up and play?
I'm just curious about the length of this game....I keep screaming I don't want it to end (in my head at least).
So, anyone? Without spoilers of course. I've already had enough shocking moments this morning.

You still have a good amount left, several hours. I think you're nearing half-way, or are at half-way.
Well, it is a shooter... ;-) I guess I'm just not following.

All in all, this game is the shit.
edit: M16 is god.
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
360 version? Count me in the next time you guys play. I have CableCarrier in my buddy list, so he can invit me.
Invite sent via xbox.com
I will be on later but I need to finish this damned Campaign. (Which I dont want to ever end)
Also I added PA in my clantag, I suggest you all do the same, or die.:x
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
Same here. I'll add a few of you gents. Feel free to invite me.
Any idea on the playlist?
GamerTag = BornToHula87
I play during the middle of the day and sometimes at night so feel free to add me.
I dunno why, but I absolutely blow at sniping in this game. Any of the other weapons and I'm fine, but when I pick up a sniper rifle I'll do horribly for the whole game. I think my favorite class so far is some variation of the special ops class. Submachinegun and explosives = win.
Origin is the exact same as my Steam, in case you're needing a Support or Assault in BF3.
Heh. Complete opposite of me. Most sniper rifles I suck with. Halo 3 I tend to do a bit better, but not necessarily. For some reason, CoD4 I manage to get good kills. Probably because it's easy to pick off people posted up. Not moving = easy kill.
Origin is the exact same as my Steam, in case you're needing a Support or Assault in BF3.
G3 + red dot = awesomesauce. It already does great damage per shot but tack on the damage perk and wow its great.
