I usually get tagged by some jerk with a M4 or M16 and the red dot or another sniper altogether. I've seen very few people use the AK so far or the RPD. Which is a little disheartening because I loves the RPD. I think I'll swap to the G3 when I finally get ahold of it though, right mix of power and range to be really useful.
G3 + red dot = awesomesauce. It already does great damage per shot but tack on the damage perk and wow its great.
I've always liked the styling of the G3 and it doesn't seem like it gets much exposure despite it being one of the more common battle rifles in the world.
I cannot wait to unlock that little G36 either, that thing has a high fire rate in the single player so it should be a nice little gun for close quarters.

Oof. The AK doesn't do it for me. Low accuracy, tons of recoil.
Saw tons of people use it in the BETA, though. Don't have access to the G3 yet either. :-(
Anyone have a link to a page that details differences between weapons?
Man, this game is awesome. I hit rank 7 last night in MP. So far I seem to be doing the best with the RPD, but I'm sure I'll be switching it up some more as I unlock more things.
Singleplayer standout moments (so far)
End of Act 1 :
Holy shit, that nuke scene was amazing. I literally gasped out loud when I panned the camera to the left and saw the mushroom cloud. And the childrens' voices as you get near the playground? Such a creepy, shocking, emotional touch.
Chernobyl :
I had seen the videos of the "stay down while 2943793487 enemy troops approach" scene before, but it ends as that group appears on the horizon. I almost had a heart attack during that sequence. Constantly second-guessing my position, unable to breathe. Easily one of the most intense moments in a game for me ever!
If anyone's looking for some MP action later tonight (PC Version), I can be found on both Xfire and Steam under the same name as here. ;-)
The master server for the PC came back up about half an hour or so ago. I got in a few matches, and holy crap. 32 players in Call of Duty 4 is insanity. It's much better suited for 18, if you ask me, like it is on the console versions. :P Also, 32 players and friendly fire on? Whose smart idea was that? I lost so many points because retards would run in front of me or run towards my grenades.

The larger capped servers are way more fun if they raise the score cap as well to compensate. It sucks when a match is over in like 3 minutes because someone is dying every .5 seconds. Some people go a little overboard though - I played on a server last night that had the score cap probably well over 10,000 - no match ever ended due to an actual "win". It always came down to a map timer decision.
how the fuck are you supposed to hold out against all of those enemies for a helicopter rescue on veteran?
Ive' made it to the end twice, but how the fuck I am going to make it to the chopper I dunno
yeah, just made it to the end -
You know, I figured I'd have to carry the son of a bitch, but the chopper couldn't have parked in a more fucking inconvenient spot.
HOLY SHIT:
Just did it, the friggin bunker car rink area was a goddamn solid idea, thanks Ranced. All you have to do is hide out there, take out a few enemies, wait for the two guys to ambush you, kill the stupid fucking dog, take the RPD, and start shooting bitches, then grab MacMillian, use the wheel as cover, and hit the fucking chopper.

I find on a lot of those maps, the PRD is God. I'm doing good so far on the PC version. I'm always in the top, and I've never had a negative ratio yet. Going from the 360 version to the PC version almost feels like I'm cheating. It also looks better on the PC.

They are proximity. Also, directional - you have to walk in front of it to set it off.
I sort of wish they self detonated... In single player, at the end of the Chernobyl mission, I set all 8 of mine in the exact positions to not get triggered, and they just sat there mocking me in their uselessness during that bloody awful firefight.
Any way to set direction? What way are they "facing" if I just place it?
I ask, because this morning I was playing Crossfire and had myself a nice little nest, but occasionally would get snuck up on and killed. So I tried placing a claymore. Didn't help, unless he disarmed it. Is that possible? Is there a timer on it before it arms?
Before you set one down, if you notice the side you're holding towards you says "BACK" on it. They're facing away from you when you put them down.
I'm sure there's some way of foiling them, since otherwise they can pretty much lock down a map perfectly otherwise, but I don't know what it is yet, if there is one.
I was playing as Marines on District and it seemed like there was a constant hurricane of terrorists and gunfire at all of the flags. Not to mention so many people had Martyrdom on. Everyone's shouting out where the enemies are, helicopters are going down, airstrikes going off.
I'd love to have an organized 9v9 domination sometime.
Edit: also, my first match was the best.
27 kills/4 deaths with only an M16. Against several officers/sargeants.
I went up to Lance Corporal from that match alone.

You think that's intense? Try it on the PC with 32 players! You will be crying for your mommy. Honestly, I think they should have just had the limit be 18 for the PC version, too. 32 seems a bit excessive on these maps.

When Macmillan bolts through that field of guys unnoticed and hids between the cars?
Fucking awesome.
I had a huge grin on my face the entire time during :
"Let's crawl under this column of trucks/jeeps/what-have-you"
I was on the edge of my seat with my breath held for the entire friggin' level, especially when
That big ass patrol walked right over you in the large field

Also, re: multiplayer, raise your hand if you have found yourself with the urge to spy-check a teammate (or have actually done so). *raises hand*
That last level was great, especially the very end. The level after the credits was cool too, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how/if it related to the rest of the game.
I didn't get a chance to try arcade mode yet, but I checked out the cheats and they were pretty cool. I could definitely see myself playing full levels in black and white, super contrast, photo negative, and combinations of the three. The silent film one is funny, but I couldn't really play with it on for any extended period of time.
So, I've only had time to play the training level and the first mission or two.
I must say, it's a very impressive game and so far it's a lot of fun.
Graphically, it's pretty nice, for a DS game. Reasonably detailed and varied. The framerate is nice and smooth, except on rare occasions when a shitload of stuff happens and the framerate drops a little for a very short time. But overall it plays very smooth. The textures and models are all slightly above par for the DS, but the special effects are pretty nice.
What's also really impressive is the audio. First of all, there's tons of voice-acting for a portable title. The intro was fully voiced, and the characters that talk to you all speak. During the course of missions, your leader will give orders and your team mates will speak out about locations of enemies. I've been pretty impressed by the amount of voice work in the game. Secondly, the sound track is also very, very good. I don't know if these themes are akin to the proper COD4 themes, but they are definitely good and fit both the theme and atmosphere of the game, and its levels and events as you progress.
The controls. Man, these are great. It controls similarly to Prime Hunters in that mouselook is mapped to the bottom screen and 'wasd' is mapped to the D-pad, and L is fire. You double tap the screen to use iron sites, and you double tap down on the dpad to crouch, or double tap up to run. This all works really, really well as it emulates KBAM-like controls, and are very precise. This is aided of course by the smooth framerate of the game. As far as 'metroid claw,' that's really not as much of an issue as it was in Hunters. The reason is because this is a slower-paced game than the Quake-like nature of Hunters. The result is that you're not required to clench your hands as tightly or scribble the touchscreen as viciously as you are in Hunters; you can relax your hands a little more as you try to take out enemies with a little more method than you do as you run and jump and circle strafe in Hunters. Last tidbit; you change weapons quickly and easily by tapping the gun and releasing the stylus on the weapon you want. You double tap the weapon to reload. You click the grenade icon to equip that.
The top is screen is where the action takes place. The bottom has a very detailed map of the area, that rotates properly along with you as you move. It has markers for friendly and enemy locations, as well as objectives. It's a nice little addition and helps figuring out where you need to be next, or to see where some enemy is shooting from (the enemies appear as red dots, and they only show up on the map when you can either 'see' or 'hear' the enemy, so it doesn't give away suprise enemy attacks).
Yeah. So, so far, it looks good, sounds great, controls extremely well, and is a good bit of fun so far. I've only gotten some ways into it, but it's a contender for best or second best FPS on the DS so far (depending on how much you enjoy the quake-like nature of Hunters).
My brother's friend's dad used to be in the SAS. I can't imagine how fucking fit he'd be, to do the training they had to do. SAS training can kill a man.

was watching a tv special on some tests potential SAS candidates have to go through.
involves trekking through a real desert for a couple days, being tracked by local pro trackers. then when they get captured finally (and they do), they're put through simulated torture. psychological torture anyways.

They have to trek along the Brecon Beacons with some obscene amount of weights strapped to them at all times, along with their normal gear.
I love it when you do really good at these kind of games, people call you a hacker. 19-0 on Showdown. They kept coming up the stairs, and I kept gunning them down and taking their ammo. Then a well aimed air strike killed half of them, then a helicopter, and more stair killing. It twas glorious. I love this game. Afterwards, everyone called me a hacker. I'm surprised I didn't get booted out.

Had a chance to play through up to bog on the PC version, and I have to agree that other than the grenade indicator sometimes not being noticable enough, agree that the gameplay is solid. Definately a good game, though not GotY material (if it were some other year on the other hand...).
Running it with everything but AA maxed, I have to say that while the graphics are decent, I can't see how it possibly got awards at all the game shows for best graphics earlier this year. Maybe I've been spoiled by all the DX10 games that came out, but if they could do such a great job on the effects of the smoke grenades 2 years ago in CoD2, how come the RPG trails are just a bunch of white squares and the rain was clearly just sheets of the texture. It's 2007, and extensive soft particle effects are perfectly manageable. And while the enviroment details are very nice, the character models are kinda dated, the skin in paticular, and is there even lip synching?
Also, some one said something about destructable enviroronemnt? other than the fact that _some_ of the geometry elements can have physics, and the cars can explode, I don't remember seeing any non-scripted destruction to buildings. In fact, I remember seeing a few horizontal barrels which didn't roll around, and in fact didn't react at all to being shot (I was out of grenades).
Overall, defiantely a solid 9/10, but really, some of the hype is a bit ridiculous.

I use the RPD a lot. I use the shotty more, but when I get into a map the shotty just doesnt have range for I RPD it up. A good gun, I cant tell the foregrip is worth losing the aimpoint over though, but all in all, its a fine weapon.
P90, Semi-Auto Shotty, AK-74U, Mp44, and G3 are my personal favs. Nothing beats running around and assassinating people with a silenced P90 and a knife.
Super contrast mode is so beautiful, especially in sunny outdoor environments. After playing one level with it on I have trouble going back to regular mode. These graphic filter cheats are just awesome. I hope this is something more games start to have.

Hide behind the bumper car ring and take them out quick when they come for you. It'd really help if you use a very high sensitivity setting.
