The game is so shallow and just a mindless shootfest, the kind of game that i am supposed to hate.
But i loved it.
It's like a popcorn movie. But a game.
My friend and I noticed it's almost exactly a season of 24. Down to the beginning with Middle Easterners but ending with Eastern Europeans for villains. And it's fun for the same reason: stupid excitement and awesome.

Also, Arcade Mode is brilliant.
Nothing better than running through mile high with a shotgun and seeing how high you can get the multiplier!

The way I enjoy COD4 more is by just imagining myself playing as steven Seagal for every level. That basically sums up how awesome the game is and the tone of the action.
I really wish it was possible to turn off (or even down) the music in some levels. It kinda takes me out of the game when I hear Bruckheimer music pounding.
seta snd_cinematicVolumeScale "0" might do it. You can turn the entire volume down with snd_volume, but I'm not sure if the scale sets a range of the current volume, or if it is something else.

Man, that's what made it so awesome.

Okay, help me here.
I'm really getting frustrated with the airstrikes/helis. Like, seriously pissed off. Is there anything I can do to make it more enjoyable?
And maybe my team is just awful or something, because we never seem to get them ourselves.

I've noticed that every single time my team has been absolutely bombarded with airstrikes/UAVs/Helicopters is when I'm playing with randoms. Find some friends from PA or something to play with, most of us are pretty good and can counter these bombardments.
You may still get bombarded while playing with us, but hey, you've got someone to talk to while you're hiding from the enemy.
Just got done with CoD4 singleplayer. One hell of a ride, and it was just that: a ride, like a rollercoaster, except it's on fire and helicopters are shooting at you and dogs are leaping for your throat and the people around you are dying. I think I'm gonna go again.
The bonus mission was weird for me, when it first started my controls were all reconfigured so I was walking forward with Q and stuff. At first I thought it was some joke challenge, but going into Controls and back and they went back to normal.
I totally understand, I just feel like hearing all the sounds of the battle and no music whatsoever makes it that much more intense. Ever seen Children of Men? There's a few incredibly intense scenes in there where there's no music, and it's for the better.
I think the music just kind of breaks my immersion, because it's like "Oh yeah, this is just a game / movie".
And also, how Goddamned awesome is Death From Above? I know I'm late to the party, but seriously. Awesome shit.

So I've got 1.2 installed and it still fails to initialize punkbuster. Now I can't join ANY servers w/ punkbuster. Any suggestions?

Okay, yeah. The bombing runs and the helis are really fucking getting annoying and ruining my fun.
They only bother me on maps with little overhead cover, in TDM. There are other game modes where they are rarely called in, or are less effective because the objectives are typically indoors.
Woot, I can get this for 70RMB here in China, which is like $9 american, kick ass apparently all the EA games get released here legitimately very quickly.

Go to the punkbuster folder under cod4 and do a manual update. There should be an option to test there as well. Then make sure bp is enabled in game under multiplayer options.

I loved the music, especially the rock/metal bits. It actually helped the immersion for me, because during Desert Storm, American troops would blast heavy metal music to intimidate their enemies. Whether the developers had this in mind when they made the game or not, it's an awesome touch.
Alright here's the deal. I just bought the game via Steam, but I'm stuck at my folks' house with my old P4 + Ti4200 machine. Can I crank the detail down and survive multiplayer?
Anyone getting an error 131133 with pb using the steam version, turn off the steam chat overlay. I don't use it so I just started running it from the folder instead of steam. I'm not sure if this is related to the current pb update or something else, but that solved it for me.
Some weapon questions: Is there any value to sticking with the iron sights? Or is it assumed you'll switch to the ACOG or Red Dot once you have them?
For LMGs you have to choose between ACOG, Red Dot, and the Grip. I really like using the Grip because it gives a good amount of extra accuracy. So, I often use the iron sights.
I fucking hate when right off the bat I get an air strike and chopper called in, just lighting the other team up, and go like 12 - 0 in the first 2 minutes of the match and my team still loses. This happened MULTIPLE times last night. Is it really that fucking hard to not go negative kills in a fucking round.

I know a bunch of people already gave their opinions, but it really comes down to the weapon. Some weapons iron sights are terrible, such as the G36, so the red dot is the way to go. Other weapons don't benefit from the red dot, and sometimes that takes up too much of the view and/or target. As someone said, grip is a great attachment for the light machine guns, as it gives a great accuracy boost to your weapon.
It can also come down to playing style, too. Some really like using the grenade launchers, and are good at them. Others may prefer the silencer as you don't show up as a red dot when you fire it.

I like the acog on certain weapons on hardcore servers. It gives you that slight bit of extra range and while your accuracy drops, short burts will kill in hardcore if you aim well. One of my favorites is acog, bandolier, steady aim on the aku. I also like just about any silenced assault / smg with uav jammer so I use iron sights quite often as well.

Only when I alt-tab back into the game, but CoD games in general don't like being alt-tabbed.
Tearing and stretched polygons are a sign that your card is overheating.

Why did everyone have to die!

get my entire team to use Ghillie suits with UAV jammers, and just hide in the grass. It would work perfectly on somewhere like Overgrown or Pipeline.

Just the ability to use the silencer.
ACOG sucks. Red Dot is accurate and takes up less of your view than iron sights.
Grenade launcher. This is the best weapon in the game.
In fact, I carry two grenade launchers thanks to overkill.

I haven't played for days, now I get an unknown API error when I try to play.
I updated punkbuster, what else could cause this?

Personally, I've never really liked the CoD games that much. The historical setting crap always annoyed me. But this one looks to be pretty good.
Is it?
