Ok, some thoughts on the new update, in order they happened:
1) FUCK, that's awesome.
2) That whole damn update is full of awesome.
3) I'm not going to be able to stop playing this game.
4) I'm going to fail my degree.
then the shock wore off, and I managed to have some more coherent thoughts:
5) I think the community for this will be great. There'll probably be loads of shit levels made by kids, but there're lots of serious fans out there who're going to be making great stages, and posting instructions for them online, or trading them.
6) Therefore I predict that there'll be some excellently designed stages which everyone'll have downloaded, just because they're so awesome.
7) This makes customisable Miis even more likely, a concept I'm really hoping for.
8) I like the whole one-a-day-thing. It doesn't matter if the one you get is shit, because you've already got a great selection. The benefit is that any good bits you notice you'll be able to copy and use for yourself later on.
This is going to be so goddamn excellent. We're going to need a thread for posting our designs.

I'm curious what the limitations will be. In two of the screenshots, we see 14x11 squares (the icon at the bottom shows this is fully zoomed out), but that seems to be the mid-size stage (at least judging by the initialize setting shot).
He says you can resize pieces, but that is never seen in the shots. They all fit perfectly into the squares.
I wanna know so I can figure out if I can re-create Hyrule Temple or not.
Edit: Also, after this update, I really think playable Miis are really likely. Super-likely.

Well, I'm already fairly certain Hyrule Castle will be possible, though without the tornadoes I guess.
So many awesome possibilities. And you could make levels deliberately designed to train you in the use of certain moves.
Such as a triangle with the point at the bottom, which you fight in, but with a single-width channel going down to nothingness at the bottom. So you're all drawn towards this channel which it'll be hard to recover from, and the best tactic will be to spike others, so you'll get trained in that.
Things I Want to Know but Will Not Find Out for Several Months:
1. Do we have access to several layers? I mean, like being able to build a castle in the background or something. I'm guessing not, as it doesn't really look like it from these screens, but you never know...
2. Custom backgrounds from the SD card? Custom backgrounds from the SD card??
3. Custom music from the SD card? Much more difficult, would greatly bloat the filesizes of downloaded levels, but again, wishful thinking.
Oh man. The news has only been revealed within the past 3 3/4 hours, and already we've got people sharing level designs.
This is awesome.
I think we need another thread. In the OP contain the template (blank 14x11) and a link to the Dojo page. We can start by designing all the levels from the previous games.
In fact I think we need our own forum. That way these threads would be far less chaotic, and it'd be much easier to follow news.
Assuming we can edit spawn points (of course we can!), make a level split down the middle wherein it is difficult or impossible to get to the other side. Fight one on one for a while (or just sit by yourself and watch three others go at it), then make the dangerous crossing to get to the remaining opponent on the other side.
Also you could put one spawn point inside a small box and have everyone else fighting free.
Assuming this is the largest stage, it looks like the size is bigger then 14x11. There are 11 full boxes down, but you can actually see a small part of a 12th. I'd be suspecting perhaps the biggest size is 14x14.

That's what I thought at first, but if you look closely at the bottom, it looks to me like the vertical lines stop at that point, at 11 squares. It just looks like empty space under the canvas area.
Man, with so much unlockable content, I hope they have some way of keeping track of it all so you don't have to check yourself.
Something that tells you you've got 30% of music, 70% of stages, 80% of characters, 15% of stickers, etc etc, for some total x%.
To avoid spoilers they could have it only revealed to the player once you're 25% complete, and have you check how many of whatever category you're missing when you have 90% of them.

I hope this game feeds my completionwhoreness.
If there is one thing Smash is good at it is tracking scores/stats.

This is very true, I have faith.

They really are going all in on the features here. I hope this carries through to all future Mario Sport games rather than making them look shoddy in comparison.

Of course, in Melee IIRC they did not tell you the number of trophies remaining to get. Partly due to there being a bunch of nearly impossible to get ones (needing certain save data etc.).

So fucking awesome.
Perhaps additional pieces will be unlocked as you go? Meaning unlockable levels, characters, trophies, stickers, music, and maybe level pieces.
This game has almost too much content.
edit: I'm hoping that as well as pieces, you can lay down moving level hazards like tornadoes, for instance.
Making a stage covered in spikes with the super jump from air stage pokemon stadium would be so fun to play >: D
To be fair, LBP has a lot more felxibility. But still, I am glad to see user content is spreading throughout gaming.

Indeed. I just remember feeling all sad about it because it was the one thing that made me want a PS3...but now I don't need it.
Ta-da! Hyrule Castle.
Edit: The grid is the wrong size, but this stage is still small enough to fit in 14x11.
We're going to be designing levels until the game comes out..
Haha!
Plufim: I have no problem with this.

and disclaimers, to stop the parents from suing Nintendo, demanding to know why a giant penis just exploded onto our beloved Mario.

Could be possible if you can have custom music for your own levels on your own wii, but anything you submit must use smash music.
This Hyrule Castle.
I guess you never played the original Smash Brothers then, because that is spot-on other than the background which is indeterminable

Sucks that you have to register people as both a Wii Friend and a Smash friend, but it doesn't matter, it'll still be awesome.
