I played a lot of the Quake Wars beta and demo and decided that it's nothing terribly new.
It pulls off things that battlefield does better, but it just gets boring for me.
The class that can build and launch artillery is fun, but the novelty wears off after a few hours.
I'm going to pass on that game.

Anyone else play with the Sandbox thing in crysis? I spawned 3 tornadoes and played with the grenade launcher that shoots 1 megaton grenades

    !TimeDemo Run 2 Finished.
Play Time: 44.29s, Average FPS: 45.16
Min FPS: 24.36 at frame 1957, Max FPS: 64.59 at frame 1648
    Average Tri/Sec: 32881786, Tri/Frame: 728188
    Recorded/Played Tris ratio: 1.26

That's the GPU test after doing "auto detect" which set everything on "medium" and then bumping the resolution to 1280x1024.

Quake Wars was fun for a while and then I realized that what was in the demo was exactly what I was going to get in the game...with a few extra levels.

No more vehicles. No more weapons. No more upgrades. Nothing. That's it.

    No thanks.

    exactly

and I'm assuming the rest of the maps are as linear as the ones in the beta/demo

Uh the demo had 1 level...... I dunno about the beta, didn't play it.

The retail has... 12 ? 4 campaigns of 3 maps each I think.

plus the SDK was just released, which means user created maps any day now.

maybe I'm just a RTCW/ET junkie but I love it.

100x better than Battlefield, where the net code suxx0rs, and the hit detection is just a joke.

Maybe Unreal3 will yank me away, but that's months away.

    it's a cutscene

of course you don't have control

For a couple of years now the better shooters have had large events going while using level design to attract your attention to what they want you to see, but leaving you in control, instead of scripting in "Hey fuck you look at this shit we made" events.

I liked the way Gears of War did it, whenever there was a cut scene going on mid mission you just hit a button and you get to look at the stuff you need to look at.

It's my one gripe with Halo, often people will be talking without me really knowing what is going on. I found out most of the story for Halo 1 & 2 from watching the bonus disc from the legendary edition as they actually looked at all the important shit you needed to.

I can't decide if I want Crysis or not. On one hand, it's really bland. On another, the weapons sound cool and once the Alien stuff pops up, it may get interesting (or it could just get worse like Far Cry did when the mutants showed up).

The release version must have done a 180 because the netcode in the Quake Wars beta was godawful.

    More skirmish

The editor pretty much lets you do whatever you want. And not even half of the stuff in the editor is available yet. Can't wait for release.

    Koreatown, meet explosions.

Needless to say I died many times taking these shots, until I realized I could enable god mode. The explosions in this game are so so nice.

It's not in the demo I downloaded.

I think it was an alternate link that Wren put up (perhaps in the team fortress thread, or wherever it was we were also discussing this).

I had a go on Crysis, and it even impressed me running on low with no anti-aliasing. The explosions are fucking gorgeous, and throwing a guy off a cliff and then shooting him on the way down is fucking hilarious. I'm gonna have to wait for a while to get my hands on an 8800 though.

Just a note to anyone who's running on low- if nothing else, make sure to set physics to medium. The occasional FPS dip is more than worth being able to jump onto a building and punch your way in through the roof.

Yeah, took a few minutes to figure that one out. When it's running on high, does everything become destructable? I was irritated at only being able to knock down certain trees etc.

is there a tutorial that someone whipped up, on how to use the editor? I'm finding it very obtuse right now.

yeah I was pretty pissed with it at first

Go to File then open up one of the levels that are already made.

In the RollupBar to the right, click "Entities" and spawn any vehicle or weapon you want.

You can figure out the rest from there; that's all I know about the sandbox and I had plenty fun

actually, that's exactly what I did.

Made a size 1000 chicken, with 10,000 mass, and plunked it down on the island somewhere. Named it the "Battle of Cockery" I'm sure I'll figure out more sooner or later.
