The Witcher: on 360/PS3 fall 2009

DravalenDravalen Registered User regular
edited July 2009 in Games and Technology
I haven't seen a thread for this so now might be as good of a time as any to start this.

What is The Witcher?
The Witcher is a fantasy PC RPG built on the the Neverwinter Nights engine from Polish developer CDProjekt based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Why should I care?
Because it looks to be an awesome game, there have been a couple reviews here and here that should give you a better idea about the game than I probably can.

Gametrailers also has some good footage of the game as well as the intro here. The game ships today and hopefully should show up in stores sometime tomorrow, color me stoked.

Pictures. A world map or some shit if the game has it. And mention of the now fixed sex scene with the nurses in act 5.

They're using the jade empire engine again? I fucking loved that game and thought it was criminal that it's engine was used for one game.

    Color me interested.

I was almost going to let this game slide until I saw it was an ARPG, and looked like a darker version of Fable. With the option for a Diablo-like camera perspective. And fighting styles on-the-fly a la JK II.

It's as if it has my name written all over it.

Too bad it won't be released here soon (Nov 3, a few days behind you guys), and it'll probably be the censored version, knowing my local media authority.

    Plus I have exams.

Finally! I was almost tempted to make this thread myself. I've been playing it and it is one of the best RPGs I've played in a long while. It's a very adult themed game, too. You can go around and sex up peasant women and so forth. :) The US version is censored, however.

I'm currently in Vizima and I am overwhelmed with things to do. The start of the game is kind of uninteresting, and then you get into the outskirts of Vizima and it starts to open up. And then you get into Vizima itself and it just blows you away. There are so many side quests and things to do I don't know where to start.

Edit: As far as combat goes, you can choose a third person style in which you can rotate it around yourself to get a better view of the action. You move with the WASD keys, and you left click to attack (try to chain combos!). Right click uses signs, or magic abilities. You can also switch it to an isometric view where you point and click to move. That view made it a bit easier for certain boss fights. You can also pause the game with space to change your poses (your swords have three poses, strong, fast, and group), drink potions, change your target, etc.

I don't care, I saw the part where
You cure that woman (werewolf?) by locking yourself in her crypt and forcing her to stay outside till dawn
that was so classic that this game is already gold in my book.

Yeah I totally remembered all the hype surrounding this title but it's only after release that everyone seems to remember it. =\

So its using a advanced version of the KotoR engine? I can run that on my Laptop!

It sounds like another Gothic style game which I'm all for. Now does the US version just take a patch to make it normal? Am I a nasty man for even thinking that a censored version is game breaking deal?

When you sex women, you get a card showing the woman naked. In the US version, I believe they just don't have that card. You can also view the cards later if you're feeling lonely. :P I think that's all they changed. I have the European version, so I can't comment too much on the US one. GoGamer might be shipping the uncensored version last I heard, however.

But damn, the game is very adult themed. The atmosphere is very dark and I love it.

Maybe the confusion with Jade Empire comes from the combat somewhat resembling Jade Empire. There are three stances for your steel and silver blades (strong, fast for the agile opponents, and group for damaging a group of enemies if you're surrounded) and you actively click to attack, as well as timing your clicks to pull of combo attacks.

I was close to that. :D

The best way to show how much difference are between censored and uncensored versions is this screen:
    NSFW
    http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=8544&id=108103
In censored version, game is castrated from best moments - even some quest can be deleted in US version so I recommend buying it from amazon.uk, or somethink like that.

I also recommend review from Shacknews.
    http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=650
They're really fair in their reviews.

    And if someone interested...

Witcher received from IGN 8,5/10 note, and a prestige award "IGN Editor’s Choice Award"

    Short part of review:
"The Witcher really is a good game and one that PC RPG fans will surely enjoy. It combines some entertaining and fast-paced combat with a well realized world and pretty decent story that branches and can end in three different fashions. With a load of choice in character creation on a point assignment and morality level, there’s plenty of reason to want to come back and play the 40-50 hour game again."

    IGN users rated it 9,4/10.

Someone stills think that Witcher isn't witchy enough? :)

And for the record the devs did the censoring themselves. The ESRB never even saw the nipplefied version of the game, and probably wouldn't have made them change anything. It's certainly not any worse then God of War.

No I wouldn't want anyone else telling me what I can and can't see, but if the company decides to change something for a release in another country you can't call it censorship. No one censored them, they did it themselves.

Also I honestly don't think the ESRB would have made much of a stink over an M rated game with unanimated nipple cards in it.

They censored some Cards, or pictures, that you get off women that you "encounter". Also certain dialogue and cutscenes have been removed. How far that's taken is a mystery to me.
But again, since the game is Aurora based, a few swapped files and someone should have a mod out soon.

Can't seem to find a list of exactly what was removed. Bothering.
