Should I have my amulet set to monster or magic detection by default?
I always had it on monster. Watch your medallion, it might give you more info than you think.
I always keep it on monster too... places of power are pretty easy to spot even without the amulet, but monster detection is very useful in some areas.
The part that is really trying my patience is in the swamp forest. There are these pink plants that rape you if you come close. I do 2 damage every time I hit one. Igni does something like 10-12 but I can only get two off before I have to start hacking away. It's really frustrating.
Yeah, they're tough. Drink a tawny owl and a swallow. Get in close with fast style and keep using Ignii. That's how I bested them.
I don't mind a little difficulty in my games (hence my LP) but those things are pretty aggravating. I'm seriously considering running past them any time I see them and coming back later when I've seriously leveled up my Igni.
Echinops and archespores are amazingly weak to torches. Grab one, hit it once or twice to set it on fire, then back off out of spore range and let it burn. Throw in an igni if you've been upgrading it, otherwise hang back, down a swallow, then charge back in and repeat. I also find that axes seem to have an easier time hitting them until you've gotten better with a silver sword.
Oh shit, after some research this isn't so bad. It's actually Coccacidium, which is like a boss plant. I need to get a potion that will make me immune to poison (which is what it's spitting at me) and it'll be cake. I ended up running past it and saw a dozen buggers who looked really similar so I thought the swamp forest was just lousy with these impossible enemies. I hate this game a lot less now.

Yeah, if you want to level during chapter 1, grab a torch and whack away at the echinops in the cave at the northwest corner of the map. They give around 100xp each, there are 5-6 of them in the cave, and the respawn every time you enter.
Oh, I can just imagine your frustration thinking there was a whole forest of those flesh eating bastards waiting for you . Ya, like you found out, they're mini-bosses that don't respawn. There is only two of them in the entire swamp, and you can sell their heads to Vincent for a nice bonus. On another note, this is my third playthrough (1st with the enhanced edition) and I have to say this is one of my favourite RPGs of all time, plus the enhanced edition has really breathed new life into a game that might otherwise have gotten stagnant by now (third time after all, even with the moral choices, is still pretty similar). Besides all the widely touted changes, I really appreciate the little things, like the fact they gave Carmen a new character model to differentiate her from all the other prostitutes.

A torch is one of the few, perhaps only, subweapons that is actually useful. Eventually you can upgrade Igni to set things on fire as well but until then a torch is useful to apply the damage over time.
Damnit, you people are going to make me want to buy this. Is the only EE on sale the censored one? If it is I won't bother because I played enough of the original version.

I mean stuff like (general spoilers, so don't read if this is your first time playing)
the medallion shaking around the detective before you even know he's Azar Javed disguised.
Also the vampire prostitutes and the werewolf.
I remember being very suspicious of the detective because of my medallion.
I know the official forums said that the installer reading as "Not Responding" is normal but I'm still anxious because of it and I'm coming up on two hours now...I haven't played this before and was looking forward to before bed.

Unless you're on XP x64, it's completely normal.
If, by chance, you are on XP x64, it's still completely normal as long as you ran the patch in compatibility mode for win95. If you didn't, punch yourself in the face and restart it. Maybe not in that order.
Playing the EE alongside Clear Sky, and I can't tell if this is an oversight or if I'm just missing something, regarding Leuvaarden's quest in the outskirts:
Geralt claims to recognize the King of the Wild Hunt as the one who 'chased' him - I can only assume he means during the intro - but this is never really clarified. The journal indicates that the Wild Hunt appeared again; does anybody know if there's an earlier reference to it?
I know some of the plot elements are kind of subtle, but I honestly can't remember hearing anything about it earlier.
triss and/or lambet mention the wild hunt/magic storm was out when they found geralt, and it was the wild hunt that was chasing him in the intro.. its generally assumed that is what he was referring to, some also take it as a reference to the wild hunts appearance in the books.
Interesting. I'll have to pay more attention during the prologue, and I didn't even think about a connection to the books. Thanks.
Incidentally, it is beyond cool that they packed in the soundtrack and bonus music with the free downloads. Hell, Sentinels of Brokilon makes the two-hour wait worthwhile all by itself.
That is some of the most utterly AWESOME game music ever. I so want to get the witcher now. Only problem is that it doesn't come on steam in aus, so I have to buy the first one, then download EE off the site. Anyone know where to get this song as an mp3? If not then I'll just get the game and convert.

Damn I saved that barmaid in chapter 1 and got her back to her grandmothers. She said to meet her in the old mill the next night and we'd have a good time. I went at night and the door is locked, what do I do? Also Odo's dog is barking at something, was that the beast before he appeared?

Sorry, I cannot advertise this enough. Basically Impulse is Stardock's Digital Distribution system. The Witcher is available on there now (not sure whether for Australia but I would guess so).
The main benefit of Impulse over Steam though is that there is now DRM on any of the games. Stardock don't believe in it, and neither do CD Projekt, So the Witcher is up on Impulse now.
What that means is that you don't need a net connection to play once you've downloaded the installer. You can back it up, install it wherever you want, however many times you want, whenever you want. No further dealings with Stardock or anyone else necessary, the game is standalone from there. BUT, like with Steam, you can download it whenever you want again from Stardock so long as they're in business, the game is a part of your account, not just a one off purchase (*Cough*Cough*Six month EA downloads*Cough*).
Oh snap, just noticed that "Overclocked" is on there now! Game Get!
Availability: North America, Eastern Europe and Russia
Sorry dude, I may have gotten your hopes up for nothing. Might still be worth installing Impulse and seeing if it's made available to you, but I'm not sure I'd get my hopes up. Looks like they'll probably only make it available when it's out in Aus. Still, try it. I'm technically not in Eastern Europe, and the game appears to be offered for me (£ price points and all). It could just be an omission or something, or they might allow you anyway.
I'm very, very interested in this title, as my love for old CRPGs (and collection fetish of solid PC titles) knows no bounds.
However, I'm concerned my rig is just barely good enough to get by:
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
GeForce 7900GT
2GB DDR RAM
It seems as if this meets 'recommended' specs, but will the gameplay experience still be enjoyable? I'm just concerned about plunking down the cash for the game if I can't play it.

Try the demo. If you can just barely run that satisfactorily then you're good to go, the game's been heavily performance tweaked since then. In general the cutscenes staggered for me pretty badly, but the main game was fine, haven't tried the latest version yet. I think on a 7900GT you ought to be good.
Thanks anyway subedii. I saw the witcher at a local store for $50 which is cheap enough for me. Getting the game was never a problem, I just wanted to know if I could get the music.

Can't you just download the soundtrack directly from the site? Or do you need a key for that?
EDIT: Nope, just checked, you can download the soundtrack direct from the website. Although I'd suggest getting the game anyway. Listening to music in-game tends to sound weird if you've already heard it on the soundtrack I find.

This is probably the first time I gotten hooked on a game 8 or so month after I purchased it. My first play through I barely made it to Ch.2, and gave it a big 'MEH' because I gotten tired of waiting 3 minutes for every transisition change. But the EE patch made this game 'GOTY' material, seriously I feel guilty for d/ling the patch. It's so obvious that they spent a lot of time on it, and I want to buy the game again as a show of thanks. Sadly I'm broke and cant do such a thing.
My only complaint is that combat can be a bit unresponsive. I find myself screaming at Geralt 'FUCK THAT GUY UP SHIT!' as he idly sits there as he remembers that he needs to draw he sword out and kill something. This is really frustrating because it seems like every scripted combat scene haves you sitting there for 20 seconds getting stabbed.

Find somewhere to rest near the mill, and rest until sundown, she is there for a short tme right after the sun goes goes. Also, you have to give her a bottle of wine when you get there.

If you click on his sword he draws it out straight away?
I think he's talking about some cut scenes where it'll start and the bad guys will already be in your face stabbing at you. I've had that happen to me before as well, it doesn't happen every time but it does occur occassionally.

fuck yea sell it. Books are the money sink of this game, at least get half your money back.
After you read a book you dont have any reason to keep it.
Heh, now to find somebody that actually buys them.
If I remember correctly, there's a book trading dorf in Vizima, near Shani's place.
Actually, there's one book (Kalkstein's) that you should probably keep around for a while. There's that one sidequest that randomly announces that you should clear your desk because we're taking a pop quiz now.

Yeah, hitting the 'take out sword' button isn't too bad, but there are a couple of times where they pop you directly into a cut scene into combat and you will be half dead by the time gerald gets his damn sword out. It doesn't happen too often, but that it happens at all is kind of shitty design.
If, by chance, you are on XP x64, it's still completely normal as long as you ran the patch in compatibility mode for win95. If you didn't, punch yourself in the face and restart it. Maybe not in that order.
It worked and I actually played for about 30 minutes before going to bed last night. I had to turn the settings to low though because the videos were stuttering a lot. Good time so far, still in the tutorial.
I've heard you really can't go wrong in terms of developing your character so I'm thinking of becoming a pyro-maniac.
