So I decided it's time to get a graphics card, I don't wanna run anything TOO big, these basically are the games I'm gonna be mostly playing and I want to run them well,

Doom3
Battlefield 2142
Halflife 2
Portal
Team Fortress 2

I know I don't need a really fancy one with stuff I don't need, such as HDMI or even DVI output.

What resolution do you want to run? Do you want to be able to run those games on high settings?

Assuming you're at 1280x1024, the 7600gt ($85) will probably run most of those games on medium to high settings at that resolution, depending on the rest of your system. The 8500gt is not a gaming card.

Are you running AGP or PCI-Express?

I'm at 1440x900 right now, I don't wanna run the games on high settings, medium would be fine.

    I'd still recommend the 7600gt at $85, or the 8600gt at $100.

Here's a link comparing the 7600 to the 8500, notice the memory bandwidth, texture and pixel fill rates...the 8500 is a cripple. :)

edit: yeah pull the trigger, $75 after rebate is a good price too.

    hmmm
well I read some reviews, and found that 8500 is OKAY but not amazing.

but everyone seems to love this

I think I'm gonna go with this?

    I'd go with a 8600GTS.

114 bucks after rebate. More expensive, but I'd personally be fine with paying 40 extra bucks for all that extra juice, compared to the 7600GT.

I remember reading somewhere that you're not getting your money's worth from getting the newer 8600GT over the 7600 and they had graphs and tests and crap to back it up. I've got the 8600GT though and I can run the hell outta HL2 and all the Orange Box at a 1440x900 resolution, so if that's your goal, it'll do. How much more is the 8600GTS though? A little extra kick for a little extra price never hurt. The 8800s are of course way way better but way more expensive, and total overkill for your needs

7600GT is also my recommendation. Low resolution + a bunch of Source games = don't spend the extra on a crappy ol' 8600.
