So-

it was my anniversary with my boyfriend a three weeks ago, and I ordered him a very special present (I won't say what exactly because it's still a surprise and I know he checks the forums occaisionally LOL). Problems arose because I was ordering off the internet, and right after the item was confirmed and shipped, the Royal Mail acted like the spectacular bunch of pricks they are and went on strike.

Needless to say it didn't arrive on time. In fact, I'm still waiting for it, a fortnight after the strike ended. I've asked the site I ordered it from for the item reference code and looked on the Royal mail's "tack and trace" website but it either says "try again later" or "there are no records of your object at present". There is however a note on the site saying that item delivery is taking a while to return to normal.

Anyway, what can I do if it turns out to be lost in the mess? Any help/advice from people who've had similar issues? This item is both fairly sentimentally valuable and expensive, but I'm afraid it's just got stuck in the system somewhere.

The company that you ordered from should have some policy on how long you have to wait before you can claim your item wasn't delivered. It varies a lot from company to company but it's usually somewhere around 20 days. After that time period is up, contact the company and say you haven't had the item delivered. Pretty much every reliable company will send you out a replacement.

DISCLAIMER: IANAL, but I did take a Law and IT class at uni which addressed this issue.

Most companies will send a replacement as a goodwill gesture, but remember they are not legally obliged to do so. By both agreeing to have the package sent by Royal Mail, you agreed to place the trust in the post. If the post loses that, through no fault of either party, the sender is not obliged to send another one, as you had both agreed to use the Royal Mail.

Does Royal Mail offer insurance on items? If so did you purchase said insurance since the item is valuable?
