You might as well tell him to stop patching FFXI now and start d/ling CoX.

If you are sick of the raiding constantly and 1-2 enemy fights and wish you could travel fast by level 5 and just want a fun casual not too serious MMO..CoX is for you..
If you want what WoW gave you but worse..FFXI is for you..
well at this point CoX does sound more exciting, and I like the fact that it actually HAS pvp, even if it does or does not suck.
we are going to try out both tonight, so what classes do you recommend we try first? I tried looking around at the main site forums, but they were too confusing
As a duo there are some combinations that would be more beneficial than others but anything will work. The awesome thing about CoX is you don't need a healer at all.
None of the individual power sets are terrible in CoX. Some are, of course, better than others but feel secure in knowing that no matter what power sets you pick you won't be gimp.
With that said I've always enjoyed Tank/Blaster dues and Scrapper/Controller duos the best. Defenders go great with anything, though I wouldn't recommend a Defender/Controller duo because your dmg output would be poop. Controller/Blaster would be nice too but harder at the early levels.
For Villain side don't make a Stalker (though they have some new buff that may or may not make them good, I don't know). Everything else is gravey. Oh and two Corrupters V side is actually pretty damn strong. Also I find Dominators to be tons of fun because of the mix of powers but they certainly are nto for everyone. Dominator + Master Mind is a pretty potent combo.

Or you could just make whatever the hell you want and team with PA. We are on the virtue server. One thing I recommend is playing with us atleast for a little bit. Big teams really make the game and big PA teams are fucking awesome. Instructions for joining the global channel are in the op.
Yea, just make sure you roll on Virtue and join the global channel and we can help you out with whatever.
will do
ok so my friend decided on a mastermind, and I am leaning heavily toward blasters. I'm just confused about which kind to be. I see alot of different stuff like fire/energy, or ice/ice stuff. help!
edit: I just realized mastermind is villian and blaster is hero, doh.
is there/what is the equivalent of blasters for villains?
Also by the way..every single mission in CoX is instanced(except for outdoor hunts but those suck anyway) and there are no real "dungeons" to speak of with the exception of maybe the sewer and eden trials.
Hero side there are the Sewers, Troll Tunnels and Abandoned Sewers, but no one ever uses them.

Best ranged damage villain side is Corruptor, which is basically a reversed Defender. Damage/Debuff instead of Debuff/Damage. Blasters are sort of unique among all the ATs, in that they have both primaries and secondaries that are mostly attacks.

All depends on what type of blaster you want to be.
Primaries:
Ice - Greatest damage for single target and it's side effect is a slow and -recharge.
Fire - Greatest damage for AoEs.
Energy - 2nd best damage for single target and AoEs. Also my personal favorite.
Arrows - Decent damage and some neat animations though some feel that the animation times are too long (Hero only).
Assault Rifle - Good mix of powers and a really quick recharging tier 9 ability but it's smashing/lethal type damage is resisted most often in the upper levels (hero only).
Electricity - Not known for it's high damage output but it's decent. Also has a ranged AoE tier 9 that rocks and its side effect is an endurance drain.\
Sonic - Great set that deals out decent damage and as its effects stack up it increases your own damage.
Dark Blast - Lowish damage and a lot of control type blasts. Not the best for soloing and it gets a decent -accuracy side effect (Corrupter only).
Energy - Lots of melee abilities that do high damage but man, getting into melee as a blaster will get you killed constantly.
Fire - No clue again.
Devices - Despite what some people say I like it. It has some neat abilities that lend itself to soloing and has some decent self buffs but very little damage.
Electricity - I know you get a pet, some melee, and a hold.
Edit - Added bunches of primaries and blaster secondaries
man, just creating my character is going to take forever, so much stuff to choose from.
so if we go villain corrupters look interesting, especially ice.
I want to some day be decent in PVP, but also not suck in PVE.
Just as a quick notes, PvP is a rather small part of the game but it's loads of fun. In fact I have an idea coming up for next week.
Anyway for Corrupters their secondaries are mostly based on support type abilities. Thermal is mostly damage mitigation but also has 2 killer debuffs. Radiation is probably the best overall for both PvE and PvP., Cold . . . don't know ask Accualt, Traps is neat but a lot of its abilities are stationary and lend themselves more to MMs in my opinion, and Dark Miasma is good though I don't have any experience with it.

Archery got a pretty big animation revamp recently I think. Supposed to be much faster. Ice Secondary for Blasters is all about control. For a soloing blaster, its the best secondary for a more defensive/control based playstyle.
For Corruptors Ice secondary (Cold Domination) is pretty damn good. The three team buffs you get are great for keeping members of your team alive if you don't mind buffing (shift + # helps a lot when buffing a whole team). It won't shine if you don't buff your team but it does have good non-buff powers as well.
Infrigidate you may not use much early on, really only worth using against Bosses, AVs, and anything you are having a hard time hitting.
Snow Storm is a take it or leave it power. It comes in handy if you plan on being an Ice/Ice Rain (3 rains between the sets). Put it on and drop your rains so the enemy takes longer to get out of them. I don't recommend taking it until you have stamina, though.
Arctic Fog is a must get right away. It is a toggle buff for you and anyone in PBAO of you. Plus it looks awesome and gives you some stealth.
Benumb is an awesome debuff best used against AVs. It is a great PvP debuff power as well.
Sleet is your bread and butter. AE KD, Speed, recharge, Def, and Res Debuff? Yes. Slot it for recharge.
Heat Loss gives you and your team endurance back while increasing your endurance recharge. It is a great power but I don't find myself needing it that often.
Ice Blast...take everything but Frost Breath. You will be a single target burst dmg machine who also has holds...and eventually two AE Rains. You can take Frost Breath if you want, it isn't bad, its just if you are pressed for power choices that is the first one to drop, imo.
Oh and Radiation Blast tends to be lower dmg but faster attack rates and it has a -def attached to each attack, making it easier to hit the target after each blast lands. It is an awesome attack set for Corrs because of Scourge plus it has more style in its animations than any other blast set, imo.
I'd say worry more about what kind of class you want to play than what works well with your friend.
The classes in WOW are much more inter-dependent than COX. There are lots of things in WOW that you need a certain combination to do, and lots of combinations that don't work very well.
There is much less of this in COX. Some, for example a bunch of low-level tankers and controllers together might need to bring a book to read while the utterly safe boredom rolls along, but mostly you're better off playing what you want and letting your brain make the group strong than synergising classes.
Fire/Dark Corruptors are broken fun on larger teams (more mobs to AoE). Someone pulls a whole nation of mobs to a corner to bunch them up and you throw out a Tar Patch so they can't escape, then Rain of Fire, Fireball and Fire Breath. Soooooooooo many numbers.
And you don't need to worry too much about class choice Villain-side. Unlike Hero side their utility overlaps a lot more, and they all deal damage, so almost any combination will work (just don't go Stalker. Ugh).
They don't sound all that hot to me since you are still stuck with the problem of what to do other than AS, Placate, AS, run away. Now 6-8 Stalkers can one shot AVs but good luck finding 6-8 high enough level to fight AVs.
Energy - 2nd best damage for single target and AoEs.
Ghost, you damned well know that this is a flat-out lie.
Energy's AoE damage output is absolutely fucking laughable. It certainly doesn't hold a candle to Fire, Archery, or AR. It's even worse than Elec. Its AoE is just about on part with Sonic's. Which is to say it's absolutely awful.
Electricity - I know you get a pet, some melee, and a hold.
Elec as a secondary doesn't get a pet. That craptastic pet is a poor substitute for a tier 3 blast in the primary. Elec secondary gives you some good utility and some really good melee. One of those melee attacks happens to have a mag3 hold attached to it.

What to do other than "AS, Placate, AS, run away"? You see all those powers in Stalkers' primaries? The ones that aren't called Build Up, Placate, or Assassin's <whatever>? You're supposed to USE THEM. AS is not a crutch, and the non-AS damage isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is. If your play style as a Stalker is revolving wholly around the big burst damage of AS, then you're doing something wrong. At low levels I can maybe see it, but even after doing a bunch of lowbie Flashbacks, I still didn't have too much of a problem with it.
As for the Stalker changes themselves? Hell yes I'll take it. So I won't be able to one-shot Lieutenants any more. Big deal. I'm Claws; I don't one-shot them anyway. If the numbers I've been hearing are correct, my damage against Bosses and such will be much, much, much better. I'm talking going from doing ~600 damage using Assassin's Claw to doing around 2000+.

Sieve just go back into hide and let the brutes do their work..it'll be alright.
My stalker problem isn't their damage as much as the defense. They always feel about as squishy as a blaster to me, the running isn't to set up another AS, it's to not die.

Dammit... I'm one month away from my 36 month badge. And my account closes today. Oh well. See you guys next issue.

Well, the problem here isn't their defenses, which have the same values as Scrappers, but their HP, which is much lower. They have same base HP as Defenders/Controllers/Dominators (1017.74 at 50) while Scrappers have 1338.6, Blasters have 1204.8 and Corruptors for some reason have 1070.9. I really don't understand why Corrs have an extra 50 or so hp than their comparable ATs, but its pretty minor. Stalkers reallly ought to be somewhere around Blaster base HP.

Actually masterminds are really fun IMO. it just takes a few levels before they're any good.
Origin: Galedrid - Nintendo: Galedrid/3222-6858-1045
Blizzard: Galedrid#1367 - FFXIV: Galedrid Kingshand

my friend is going mastermind, so to duo with him I have it narrowed down to:
ice/cold corr
ice/rad corr
fire/rad corr
or some form of a dominator (mind/ice? ice/fire? fire/ice?)
like I said I want something good for PVE, but that can also team pvp decently, but the ones I have listed have me most interested.
Go Ice/Rad..why? I said so that's why.
I'm recalling most of this from memory pal. It's been like a year since I've made an alt.
