Looking for a good, free MMORPG

edited November 2007 in Help / Advice Forum
I'm looking for a decent, free MMORPG to kill idle time with. It helps if it will run with 512MB of ram on a 1.4Ghz celeron M, with 128MB of shared video ram on an integrated POS. Isometric quasi-3D is a preferred, but full 3D is fine. :D

I tried Flyff and Trickster, but the grind is horrible.

I know there's a free MMORPG megalist in the MMO forum, but it's old, and many of the games have changed considerably or have vanished since being mentioned.

    MMORPG = grind, dude

if you want to kill a little time, I suggest Toribash.
    Not an MMORPG, but fun

There's grind, then there's "Holy crap, what kind of monsters designed this?".

I could take RO's grind just fine up until I explored the entire world and did everything, and supposedly its grind is pretty intense. :P

most of the free mmos are korean, and you know how those are. I can't think of any free ones that don't have a terrible grind off the top of my head

Just play Gunbound instead. Really, a lot of the free MMORPGs that are around are, well .. just terrible. Gunbound isn't an RPG by any stretch, but it's still a lot of good fun. It helps that you can hop on and just play one game or several depending on how much time you have.

Drift City is also a lot of fun, too, while not strictly an MMORPG.

As far as actual MMORPGs go, though .. I think Trickster is still free?

This depends on your gaming interests, but Puzzle Pirates was a pretty fun way to waste time for me... I haven't played at all for a few months, but if you like puzzle games it's got a nice mix plus some mmo elements

Gunbound is pretty fun if you don't mind waiting those turns, dealing with dumbass players, and the god awful game start system

Obligatory reference to Anarchy Online. The original classic game and the first booster pack Notum Wars are free to play (supposedly the program is up for renewal on Jan 15, 2008, but they have never "not" renewed it yet... the ads are continuing to come in, and it's a money maker for them). The Expansion content costs a monthly fee and purchase of the expansion, but the Froobs (free players) and the Subscribers mingle freely, and there is a large and thriving Froob community. Should run on your system. It's a huge hassle to upgrade the client to the latest patch, though. I'd suggest downloading the most updated froob client from their FTP site, then patching each individual subsequent patch, closing the patcher after every download.

    Other free games:
Dungeon Runners - Diablo with a sense of humor. Subscribers get tremendous advantages, but you can still play it for free and have a lot of fun. Very pick-up-and-play.

Shadowbane - Some bad stigma around it, because of its no-holds-barred PvP, but it's a fairly unique and entertaining fantasy game to play, especially if you are just looking for a diversion.

Ones to avoid: The Korean MMOs, Silkroad, Rappelz, Flyff (anything by Gpotato, really), RF Online, 9 Dragons, Last Chaos, and loads of other crappy games. Pretty graphics, very little substance other than the grind, and many of them have almost identical engines.

I tried Dungeon Runners, but the graphics looked atrocious (maybe my crappy video card), and the character models were ridiculously over-buff, which is something that I can't really get over. :P

If you treat it as a serious game, it's definitely going to fall flat. However, if you treat it as a cartoony parody of every single Diablo Clone ever made, it's fairly entertaining (at least, it was for me). There's a ton of humor in the game, and most of it is from lampooning the genre of "Red Life/Blue Mana" Action RPGs out there.

I didn't like how limited the free version is, and how much of the game is PvP, even counting members content (I subscribed for a while). I got to about level 60 a while back and quit. :P

Tibia was fun a few years ago. Stay away from Maple Story though... I really liked the character design and music but the gameplay was endless grinding..... and then that was it. just not enough stuff to do.

It gets a bad rap, and I don't play it anymore, but you can easily burn some time on RuneScape.

Shadowbane is quite awesome, but the PvP is unforgiving. Personally, I love the PvP aspect to it. You could easily max a character in a few days once you learn the ropes, and have some friends to help you.

Space Cowboy is good enough to blow a month or two on. Very different sort of MMO. The mechanics of the game help hide the fact that it's a huge grind for awhile. Fun to pick up from time to time still though. Definitely worth checking out.

I recently downloaded one called RF Online. So far, it's alright. Sort of reminiscent of phantasy star mixed with FlyFF. Of course, the grind is there.

You forgot GunZ (I know it's not REALLY an rpg)
    http://www.gunzonline.com/

The game looks like it's freaking awesome. But the fact is, it isn't. It sucks. It's like a bad mix of Devil May Cry and... well, crappiness. At least, that's my opinion. (Though it's been about a year since I played it, maybe they made it better?) And I love DMC, too.

    GunZ sucks.

I had a friend who loved Gunz. When he would play he made a ton of noise hitting the arrow keys to dash, and would make weird faces.

I tried it and found that if you want to be any good you have to learn these ridiculous exploits attacks

and my friend who enjoyed it so much injured his wrist playing it, apparently

I'm going to advise you to hop on the open beta of Lunia: http://global.lunia.com/ It's an awesome MMORPG/Beat-em-up hybrid. There's no auto-attack, no dodge% and the likes. Character attacks when you want it to, character dodges an attack if you are fast enough.

I really enjoyed it, although I haven't logged in for a while because of that other* Massive Game.

I played gunz a few months ago, and found that it was ridiculously easy.
The guns are all fine, chances are that if you stay back during bigger fights you'll get most of the kills, but the daggers, really, are the most overpowered weapons in any game I've played.
There's a attack with daggers that knocks enemies down, during this time you are free to shoot them with your shotgun several times in the balls. If they decide to get up, knock them down again and shoot them dead.
So easy it wasn't any more fun.
Another game I tried was Rakion. I played it for maybe a month, it's really like a brawler more than a RPG, but there are RPG elements involved. It might entertain for some time as well.
Another thing you might like is Upshift Strikeracer or something. It's like drift city I suppose, with less drifting and more shooting. You level up and get better cars and weapons et cetera.

    "Lesbian Part II".

    Awesome?

The characters are terribly cliché, there's the pink haired older guy who shoots fireballs, there's the young lad with spikes who wields a ridiculously large sword and there's the blonde anorexia princess who heals.

But then you look past that and notice that all three of them can beat the living shit out of orcs, throw them up in the air and slam them against the ground, after that you can jump down on said orcs and kill them by driving all sorts of magic energies and swords through your enemy's bodies.

Really, this game has such an awesome combat system.

*edit: there's also enough different items so that most higher level characters look different from each other. And the cash shop items don't hold any bonuses for your characters, just a pretty new skirt and stuff like that. This game is just a lot of fun to play, no nonsense combat, enough options to make a unique toon and paying costumers are not all-powerful.

I've pretty much settled on "no MMORPG." If a mod wants to move this over to the MMO forum so the current discussion of free MMOs can continue, that's fine by me.

My issue with Gunz is not the grind (which is not really necessary to enjoy the game, as it is a FPS at heart rather than a MMO). There is a "higher level" of the game which requires mastery of the controls and pulling off insane coordinated moves akin to professional-level Street Fighter. Things like jumping, wall-running, jumping again, slash, then mid-air jump (I've seen people do this, and I have no idea how they manage to dodge all of my bullets). There are maybe a hundred people who participate in this level of play, and it takes hours of refining your skills (just like in fighting games) to get to this level. This may appeal to folks who enjoy tournament-level fighting game play.

You could put it that way, but a lot of the skills involved doing things that weren't really intended by the game developers, like wavedashing in SSBM. Then again my friend who played loved all that kinda stuff when he played smash brothers too, so each to his own I guess

and I actually kinda enjoyed rappelz for a little bit, but the lag was so awful that it drove me away. I don't know what the situation now is like though
