With only two days left until the Portable installment of the amazing horror series Silent Hill is released, I was amazed to discover that there is no thread on this yet.

The Rundown:
Travis Grady, a trucker, stumbles upon our favorite town of supernatural crazy shit. 0rigins is a prequel to the already existing games.

Combat is different than previous entries and for the first time your character can actually punch enemies. Not that i'd recommend getting that close, but with breakable weapons you're gonna need something to fall back on.

What makes me nervous is how Team Silent has been pretty hands-off with this game and left it to Climax Studios to carry the weight. After all, some highlights of their previous games include Spongebob Squarepants and The Italian Job. But I don't know, maybe they can pull it off. Let's see some support, who's looking forward to it?

Fuck is this game coming out this month too?

Goddamit. I looked in the BB ad this morning and Sonic & Mario at the Olympics stares me in teh face.

Shit I didn't realize that was coming out so soon either.

Long story short, November priority is Super Mario Galaxy, but I haven't purchased a PSP game since late August and I haven't played my PSP in a good two months, so I think it needs some lovin'.

I think that IS the question of the moment. Especially after SH4 didn't have one.

One of the new gameplay mechanics which kind of worries me is that Travis has the ability to
travel back and forth from the 'normal' and 'nightmare' versions of the world using bloody hand prints as the transfer point.
This kind of ruins the suspense of that point in the game where everything would go to hell at the time you were least expecting it. The Hospital in Silent Hill 2 was the best example of this. In fact, I think the hospital is usually one of the worst places (and by worst I mean scary) in each game. The Demo showed off this new mechanic in, of all places, the Hospital. And it just wasn't quite as terrifying.

My main concern is that this will do nothing new.
Mind you, traversing between the nightmare and normal worlds was easy enough in most of the last games- they were linked by doors half the time.

I don't remember being able to travel back and forth between levels at will in SH3/4. You could go through a door which took you to the Otherworld, but going back through that door wouldn't take you to the "normal" world. Also, SH3 had different levels of Otherworld as well, and you couldn't travel between those...

I don't remember it being that easy. Part of the terror of the 'other' world was never knowing when it would come up and once you were in it, how long it would be until you could get the hell out of there. But with this new mechanic you can move between the two at will as more of a gimmick than a plot device. In the demo, you had to travel from the normal to nightmare world to find the puzzle, and then you had to move back and forth between the two worlds to find the pieces instead of it being just a pure decent into madness as the level progressed like in every other Silent Hill title.

Silent Hill 1's 'nightmare' worlds came out of nowhere, and while they usually were activated after traveling through a door, you could not turn around and go back to the normal world, and thus you had to beat that part of the game to return to the fog. And more often than not, the door you came through would become locked. An example of this is
in the very beginning of the game, when Harry sees the dead body hung on the barbed wire. It goes into nightmare world just before he sees this, and not only can you not turn back through the gate but once the demon baby things came out to attack you there was a new wall of fence blocking your escape.

But this is just the first game, let's look at the other 3.

Silent Hill 2's 'nightmare' worlds were brought on by in-game events. For example,
the hanging bodies boss battle which Laura traps James into in the hospital. After he finishes this, he becomes overly fatigued and passes out. He then wakes up and he's been transported through a non-existent hallway to a walled-in garden and it's now the nightmare hospital.
There was no way to go back and you had to beat the level.

Silent Hill 3's 'nightmare' worlds were also inspired by actions of the character instead of doors, and you could not go back to the normal world until you beat the level. For example,
the complex you enter with all of the businesses in it. You enter the nightmare world by having heather turn a valve on a bathtub. But instead of water coming from the spout, blood starts coming from the drain, it overtakes her and she is now in the nightmare world.

Silent Hill 4 doesn't count as the nightmare worlds
were literally the last half of the game.

So, I think you're playing a whole 'nother set of Silent Hill games that all of us have yet to play.

Hmm. I think you might be thinking of places where you can go from exterior (foggy) to interior (not nightmare, but rusty)... I don't think there is ever a place where you can actually move between Otherworld and normal Silent Hill. If there is, I missed it.

Just beat the game today, and it was a great experience. I was a little worried when I heard that another development team other than Team Silent was handling this, but I really think Climax nailed it with this one. The graphics are really beautiful for a handheld; the fog is well done, and the game even has self-shadows. I'd say it's up there in graphical quality with something like the latest Syphon Filter game, Logan's Shadow.

Only complaint I guess is that it really is short, it took me about 6 hours to beat... I guess that's why it's $30 and not the usual $40.

Combat is similar to Silent Hills of the past (save for number 4), except this time melee weapons can break in the middle of combat, creating even more tension when you're about to finish off an enemy only to find that your weapon has shattered. This is remedied by having an absolutely insane amount of melee weapons available. You can also use your fists this time around and there is an assortment of firearms as well. Also added are little God of War like grappling minigames. When enemies get close or grapple you, you have to follow on-screen prompts to avoid damage.

I thought this one was actually a little more difficult than other Silent Hills. I found myself not having an overabundance of healing items and actually conserving ammo and stuff for boss fights rather than just shooting everything in sight. I usually have more than enough handgun rounds for the entire game in other Silent Hill games, but this time I actually found myself using more melee weapons than firearms.

I won't spoil the storyline, but I will say that it is told rather well, the only complaint being that it does seem to reveal a little bit too much too early. It's definitely not Silent Hill 2, where the conclusion is built up over the entire game and slowly unfolds. Rather it gives a lot of info in the beginning and wraps it up succinctly at the end. Not a bad thing, so to speak, but not as subtle as Silent Hill 2, which is something apparently the makers were going for.

I'd say this game is a great success and really does Silent Hill justice. Anyone worried about a western developer taking over the franchise should look to this game; it hits all the checkboxes of what Silent Hill is about.

    El Bumparino!

So, bought the game last Friday and finished it yesterday. Clocked in maybe 6-6 1/2 hours on it. So, like Geestack said: short. But aren't all the SH games? It's not padded unnecessarily, with no boring bullshit fetch quests or anything which is nice. Still, an another level wouldn't have been so bad.

I do have a few complaints: the puzzles seemed to be a little too easy, and Hell-World seemed to lack a certain oomph. I crave a hard mode. Not to say that it was boring or anything, it just needed spicing up a tad.

On the other hand, I thought that it was well worth my 30 bones and then some, because lots of things were still done right. Even the being able to travel between Hell-World and the 'normal' one at will didn't take anything from the game like I thought it would. Instead of feeling the dread of when Hell-World will descend upon you, it's more of a question of cowboying the hell up and having the balls to go into hell of your own accord. I liked the effect that's used in the going into/out of hell sequences. I also enjoyed the storyline, thought it shed some light on some things while leaving some questions unanswered. It does follow game lore pretty well, no plot holes that I could spot. Which was good, because I know a lot of people were afraid for a while they were going to base it off of movie canon, or worse yet, dick around and make movie canon into For Realsies canon. It might go without saying, but you need to have played/have a good knowledge of Silent Hill 1 (or at least 3) to really enjoy this game.
I liked the idea/presence/character/whatever you call it of The Butcher, but it felt like he was absent for the most part, unlike Pyramid Head who hounds your ass for most of the game. I would have liked to see him pop up a few more times than he did.

For a while I was afraid they were going to screw around and change Dahila's character but after a while I realized that
Travis's perception of her was colored by memories of his own mother. He just sees her differently than Harry did.

Just started playing this ... It lacks that SH2 feel but otherwise it's great.

The combat is hectic enough to be "survival horror" but varied enough not to be as bad as SH2's, spam-one-button, combat.

You can do a "charge up" heavy hit, your normal quick strikes, a coup-de-grace if you down/stun an enemy (which for those "skin-bag" acid spiters is stomping on thier goolies ) and you have the "simon-says" stuff to handle getting grappled by a monster along with weapon breaking, slamming them with mundane, heavy objects like a TV or Typewriter, etc as well as lots of weapons you may find to hand (2x4's batons, drip stands, mat hooks, knives, etc).

And those half-butchered "cows" have to be the best horror game baddies ever! such a brilliant concept, the front half of thier body is dead and hangs limp, skinned face lying motionless on the floor, thier front legs sheered off at the knee... while the back end goes buck wild and charges its dead yet bulky front end at you ... they look great and their motions are nicely animated.

The transition system is quite good conceptualy.. you have force yourself to face the hell-world inorder to advance. So its almost as bad as it coming randomly yet its sadistic in the manner that it makes you do it to yourself.... in practice though it feels a little like the tired system of jumping between Light & Dark worlds in games such as Link to The Past, etc, etc.

I can't believe its a "stright to buget game" or a "reduced RRP" game as the graphics and music are superb and the gameplay is looking pretty bloody good too.

Aha, I knew there was a Silent Hill Origins thread here, and managed to find it without the search feature (since it's currently disabled).

Anyways, apparently Konami announced 2 days ago that yes, this game is being ported to the PS2. You can already preorder it from Amazon. It's priced around $30 with a March 4th release date. I don't know if they are official or just things Amazon slapped up there to get preorders, but whatever.
Great news for me, as now I do not have to purchase a PSP. I wonder if anything will be added? I imagine at the very least the graphics will be tweaked a bit.
