It's not a big update, it's no surprise or anything, but it's a good update. It's not something I'm angry to see in the game. It's something I find will make the game better, no matter how insignificant it is. With this in mind, you'll appreciate the updates that aren't a new stage or challenger.
Also, the reason all the updates are lame this week, obviously, is because he's building up for Friday, when Megaman will be announced. Right? Right?

Eh, it's a decent update at least. I was prepared for a pokémon/assist trophy from the demo, so I wasn't disappointed by any means. Plus I really like seeing the new menus.

I'm on board with this. I hated hated HATED the levels.

I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.
I'm not really seeing how everyone else dying more is preferable to one person dying less. Granted, I didn't do much with handicaps in Melee.
I really don't see how this works for free-for-alls, where maybe one guy lags behind the others. Aren't the better players still going to get the lion's share of the kills?

I believe the theory is that they'd get more kills and would have fewer deaths. But in practice, everybody else would get more kills too
So...
Yeah. It's totally worthless in Timed unless you want to putz around with the damage ratio too, turning what was once a one step process into at least three or four and still retaining that abstract nonsense that this claims to fix. Even in Stock, all it does is effectively shorten the time that the good/handicapped people are alive.
That would be the problem with a scale that only tilts in one direction.
I like the new auto feature. I think it will be good for parties where not everyone knows how to play the game or at least know how to play it well. I never much used the handicaps in the other games, but auto could be fun.
I like it because you can finally see what it's doing. I never used the handicap in Melee because I had no clue how it worked. Do you receive less damage, deal more damage, or both, or something else entirely? How much does one level affect things?
This way it's very specific and you know precisely what is up, and it also appears much more customizable. Plus, you don't have to use it as a handicap - you can set everyone to 999 and have a fun event battle.

At least the update was funny-bad instead of boring-bad.
Not that it's something I'll use much, but this is way better than the old system (which was pretty much junk). The old handicap changed the way the game was played -- it really didn't help a new person learn much when you need to get them to 350% to even budge them. The number associated with the handicapped person letting you know exactly how much he actually is handicapped is helpful too.
I liked the old system for letting my friends and me fight level 99 computers(Lvl9/Handicap 9).
But you can still do that: put the computers at 9 and give yourselves 999%. It's equivalent to them doing more damage.
Or, to be more balanced, put yourselves at 100% and lower the damage multiplier so you can't hurt them as much.
Possibly I speak for only myself, but it's just not the same thing.
Well nobody's tried it yet, but I bet it really would work out to about the same: their hits kill you faster, and you can't damage them as easily.
I really doubt it'll be the same anyway; enemy AI levels will probably return but they'll be much modified, such that you could never have the same sort of level 99 fights.
A MAJOR UPDATE would be, "hey guys its got megaman, geno, and Gandalf."
Pretty sure he wanted everyone who experience his pain and disappointment when he stayed up to 2 a.m. or whatever and then anxiously waited for the twenty extra minutes the update was delayed.
Hm, not the sexiest update, but it's nice to have.
But I think everyone here is missing the potential for hilarity.
Set up a two-minute timed match. (shut up and hear me out.)
Set everyone to start with 150% damage.
End with basketball-level scores.
So basically like Super Sudden Death.
I really don't see how this system is any better than Melee's. And I liked Melee's.
Did Melee automatically change the handicap between rounds to try and even out the game?
Yes. That's always how me and my friends would play. This was so you could feel pride when you reached handicap level 2 and feel great shame if you reached handicap lvl 8

Tonight's or tomorrow's update better be the fuckin' tits, or I'll... ...be really disappointed...

It's better because in melee, if you'd have a lower handicap your knockback-strenght'd decrease tremendously
This makes for not being able to combo (except chaingrab but lets leave that out) you also can't attack without being counterattacked straight away because they didn't move an inch
here every attack stays the same so that you don't have to resort to stupid grabbing-games to build up damage
If you think it'd be too easy for the "better" player set your % to 200 or up if your opponent is really new so that, even with lucky hits, he kills you
And in more than 2, set everyone's to 100~%, add gravity to high so it'd be like they'd fight like normal, and the person with 0% would kick their ass (the new guy), a little thinkwork and you realize it's no difference because this time you can also affect gravity
The only thing I dont like about this update is the loss of "relative" strength in the handicaps.
In the old system you could get a novice at 9 and 3 veterans at 4 or something.
So the novice would kick the crap out of the veterans if he ever landed a hit but the veterans would be equal against each other.
Now its potentially everyone kicking each others butt.
This problem would be relieved if people could start at negative % values.
With this many non character updates he must be running out of mediocre ones. So tomorrow will be Animal Crossing person.
I don't know, I'm sure there some other non-character updates left.
Did you know more than one person can play at a time?
It's true!
All you have to do is plug in an additional controller and your friends can join in on the melee.
Fun times are had by all.
Or maybe he'll go for the screwball update tonight. Old Challenger: Ness! What? You thought we cut him? Not a chance, just look at that PK Blast. Does that mean Marth and Roy still have a chance? No.

This update blows.
This is significant! Because against someone who is new, the time that I am alive approaches infinity.

Why is the thread title so misleading?

This may have occurred to the rest of you before me, but I don't care.

The scores won't really be that huge as you lose a point when you die.
Oh yeah, forgot about that.
Ah well, I say it would still be hilarious.
