Welcome to the world of...My name is BREY! People call me the POKéMON... I mean, DRAGON QUEST PROF!This world is inhabited by creatures called MONSTERS!For some people, MONSTERS are pets. Others use them for fights.
Myself...
I study MONSTERS as a profession.
A world of dreams and adventures with MONSTERS awaits! Let's go!
The day some of us have been waiting for has arrived. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker hits store shelves in the good ol' USA
today!
"But RMD," you ask, "what exactly is this thing anyway?"
It's Dragon Quest! But with Monsters as your party members instead of humans!
... It's kind of like Pokémon, but not really.
Snagged from Wikipedia:
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is the first game in the Dragon Quest Monsters series to be in 3D, and the first game developed by TOSE in 3D. It uses the Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King game engine out of battle. It has cel-shaded animation, similar to those of Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2. The graphics in the battles are the same style as Dragon Quest VIII: issue commands in a turn based style, then watch them be executed in full 3D.
The battle system itself is very similar to previous Dragon Quest Monsters games. You have up to three monsters in your party, you can issue them direct orders or set them to one of 4 AI settings. Your main character does not directly participate in battles except for using items when told to do so.
Joker does not have random battles. The only way to encounter enemies is to run into one on the overworld. The monsters can be seen, avoided, and attacked from their back to get a free attack round.
What's this game all about anyway?
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker follows the story of a young boy who we meet up with after being imprisoned by his father; presumably for defying his dad and insisting that he join the Monster Scout Challenge - a league of monster battlers. Shortly after setting the stage the boy is called to his father's chamber, and is instructed to carry out a mission that will ultimately become bitter-sweet. The CELL organization - headed up by the hero's father - needs him to carry out a secret mission by infiltrating the Monster Scout Challenge. With only those preliminary orders to go off of, you take control, heading from island to island on a futuristic jet ski in search for adventure.
So, how does this work? Do I, like, run around and catch these things in a net or something?
As a main change from the original design you'll also need to "scout" enemies in DQM. Rather than befriending the monsters by giving them beef jerky and other delicious viddles, you'll need to select the scout command, which will compromise your ability to attack that turn in change for an attempt at winning over (or capturing) the enemy. Each fighter on your team will do their attack in pantomime, with each move increasing a conversion meter in the upper right of the action screen. The higher that meter is at the end of a full scout attempt, the better chance you have of converting the monster. Fail, however, and you're open to attack, and can no longer try for that monster.
Ok. I've got some monsters, now what?
You can breed over 200 DQ species together, equip monsters with items and weapons, and allocate level-up points to different areas, giving them additional attack or raising stats. There's also a far more in-depth town system, complete with a simple, touch-based item shop, and a storage system for your out-of-battle monsters.
But what about online?
The game also has a Nintendo Wi-Fi element. The player connects to the server, and their monster team is ranked. The DS then downloads a set of opponents to battle. The battles are against the monster teams of higher and higher ranked other players. For each battle you win, you get a reward, either an item or a monster. These rewards change daily and can range from unexciting items to rare monsters such as Metal Babbles. This feature is designed to be used once per day. The player can only fight one set of opponents, and get a reward once each day.

The game looks spectacular. I never played a Monsters game, but if it is like Pokemon, it'll hold my interest for a long time.
Thanks for the post, I now feel a lot more confident in deciding to get this game. I'm hoping my store gets it in today. Although I'm still busy playing Zelda and Phoenix Wright: T&T on my DS! Ack too many games!
I learned a couple new things about it that sound great from this post. I like the online daily battles and I like the breeding feature. I think this will keep me busy for awhile, that is when I get time to play it.
I remember playing the first DQ: Monsters for a long time trying to beat the final Arena battle before I finally got a team that could pull out the win.
Plus, as Sporky can attest to, I'm an epic DQ whore, so that instantly means I'm going to rent this at least. Does this come out today? Fuck. I have to juggle a few handheld games to put on my Christmas list.
I went to gamestop tonight and they said they'll have it tomorrow. Then I searched the two walmarts and the target just to make sure.
Looks like tomorrow I will get nothing done.
This game comes out today guys. I know I for one am picking it up.
Also, if anyone asks, this thread is better than the other one.

This one seems like it has a lot more depth what with distributing points at level-up, inheriting skills from parent monsters, and equippables and whatnot.
boing
I'm all up into my various Harvest Moons again but I may have to go grab this.
We shall see how this goes.
I love this already.
I'm not very far yet, so I've still got a Platypunk, Slime, and Dracky.
I refuse to not have a Slime-type at all times because they are just far too awesome.
I have a dracky, a shadow and my slime. So far my dracky wins all the fights.
The game itself it still pretty meh. I don't know if it's going to have any staying power for me. The battles are pretty ho hum, the controls and camera are awful for some reason and the graphics are pretty ignorable. It's seems like a good game but JUST good. It certainly is no Pokemon.
Spoiler!
That's what I'm running with but I've only played for about 30 minutes.
One question...
I see people are talking about "healslimes" which I'm assuming are slimes that just have healing spell. My slime seems to have learned some sort of shock spell. Is there a way to direct what spell they Learn? Did I just miss selecting something?
As far as the game goes, it seems fun. I prefer the graphics to that of Pokemon but I'm not sure about the gameplay yet.
Man, what? I will agree that the controls are a bit crappy, but that stems from the ds not having an analog stick. You have to turn the camera with your guy with the shoulder buttons and then the camera is gravy. Saying Pokemon is better just goes a bit too far though. Diamond looks like it was ripped straight from the year 2000. The only reason people still think Pokemon is good is because it hasn't changed in 10 years, so the only people that buy already know they will love it.
/rant
They are going to look like floating jellyfish. You first find them on Xeroph Isle
DQ8 was my first DQ game. I got pretty tired of it after a while but I LOVED the monster area in it. I totally stopped playing the main game and just did the arena. So it seems like this game is like the monster arena x1000 with tons of welcomed features (actually controlling your guys in combat as well as equiping them and cross-breeding)
What do people think though? Are you enjoying the game in the same way as you enjoyed the monster arena in dq8?
Hows wifi. can you battle random people? (none of my friends are going to get this)
Are the monsters funny in this game as in DQ8? I loved how cats would just clean themselves..or some creatures would spend their turn randomly drawing in the sand. so funny.
Like i dont really care about some huge story, but is there some sort of arena/tournament in the game as part of the plot? with lots and lots of matches? is it hard? (Id hate for a game like this to be too easy)
annnnd i think thats it..
oh also.. 40 bucks? boo.
You've never played Pokemon, obviously.
Have you seen my sig?
I paid $30 yesterday at Gamestop. The game gives you more control over how your monsters fight and you get to level them how you want, like DQ8's skillpoint system. Also, you can breed two monsters and get an entirely new breed. Slime + platypunk = hammerhood, etc.
I don't know how Wi-Fi works yet, but the way I understand it, the game downloads teams for you to fight against, I don't know if you can battle friends at all.
I haven't run into any monsters that just screw around in battle yet, but hopefully they're there.
I can't say if there's some big arena yet, but I know that the first DQ: Monsters game had one. And it got pretty hard towards the end.
No, they're turned off. If you have played Pokemon and still said something as asinine as this:
then I really don't have anything else to say to you on the subject.
My game just turned to night time, and there are different enemies around.
I just got a crab, and named him Krabby.
Awesome.
So, yeah. If you wander around long enough, it becomes night time, apparently.
It's elemental monsters that learn new moves and grow to fight other elemental monsters with repetitive turn based combat. If you applied everything you said you hate about DQ to Pokemon, then you should by all accounts hate Pokemon as well.
Pokemon
Story? No
Original Gameplay? Maybe 10 years ago.
Good graphics? No.
Still fun? Yes it is.
The only thing new to Pokemon is that you can battle and trade over wifi, which isn't that horribly exciting.
All your posts about any dragon quest game have been about how much you hate them, when it seems like its just your pokemon fanboyism getting in the way.
woah woah.. you can name your monsters??? sold.
also, cool about night time
You say the game hasn't changed it ten years. The fact is: It has. We're done here.
As for this game, it just hasn't impressed me yet. I haven't played it nearly enough to have a solid opinion on it yet tho.
I'm not touching the fanboyism line. It's just too stupid.
BACK ON TOPIC: How exactly does it turn to night? I've been grinding for about 2 hours total and nothing's happened. Is it story based?
You can name them or just hit Done and the game names them. It tends to just got with "Mr *insert first 5 characters of monster's name here" but sometimes it coughs up some pretty funny names.
Anyhow, this thread isn't about Pokemon.
Pink: As far as the night thing goes, I'm not sure... I was wandering around on Xeroph Island and it turned to night. I had just visited the tent in the valley before it happened.
Hmmm, I'm still grinding on Newborn Island after the Opening Ceremony. Maybe it just won't happen there.
Well, that answered my next question. I was afraid to leave Newborn Isle for the ceremony because I didn't think I could come back...
It will turn night, but it takes a pretty long time. Ghosts and Winkies (eyeball guys) come out on Infant Isle at night.
all the gamestops around here have it at $40
I see you have let my monsters set as substitutes gain experience, even though they never fight.
THANK YOU.
Sincerely,
Gilder
Also, I too had to pay $40 for this. Which pisses me off. No DS game should be that much. Ever. Although I did get the cloth, even though I didn't pre-order. So that was nice.
