Scaremongering

Anarchy Rules!Anarchy Rules! Registered User regular
edited November 2007 in Debate and/or Discourse
It's come to that time of the year when I expect to see scaremongering festooning newspapers and television programmes. In the past years it's been Bird Flu, arctic winter, terrorism, ebola etc. etc.

This year: nothing. I'm worried. Does this mean something of epic proportions will occur and my newspaper won't have printed a survival guide?

Anyone else seen anything? The only thing I could possibly think of is an escalation of the credit crunch...

I then began to wonder why there's a scaremongering season about this time every year. I pondered it, and still have no idea.

How about Pakistan? They do have nukes, after all. Plus, there was a school shooting today in Finland that's been linked to YouTube, so I expect Congressional debates about regulating it soon.

Apparently the pollination they do is pretty damn important to agriculture. Important enough that there are businesses that make money off of renting their bees out.

Yeah, a large amount of plants rely on pollination to reproduce.

I think we forgot to mention the ever-present global warming threat.

The ads mentioned are only focused on sexual consequences of meth. Ya, the sex mentioned in the ads is definitely not great, but there are many worse consequences. The ads don't mention those, though, just sex, which seems to be the only "bad" thing they associate meth with.

Firstly, you don't know that, since you haven't seen the entire campaign, secondly, if you think there would be no further consequences to either of those acts you're very much mistaken (you couldn't be more likely to catch something if you ran around town biting hobos). I think your fundie sense is malfunctioning; attacking these ads on the grounds of some kind of hidden sex-phobia is pretty ridiculous.

Ok, but the question I'm asking is if these stories are on at the same time as real news or separated into their own little timeslot ghetto. Because in the latter case, its a lot easier for people to go 'oh, they're at it again, pfffft', but in the former, where the scare piece is in between something on Iraq and a piece on the French president's divorce, its harder for people to call bullshit and dismiss it.

The bullshit is generally on at the same time at the real news. They'll end a story about the war, and then start talking about how polyester causes cancer. So it's the latter.

One thing I've noticed is scaremongering is quite effective when it's a disease or terrorists or some immediate threat rather than long term dangers. For example, drinking Coca Cola can lead to weight gain and diabetes but people still drink it regularly enough. However, if a report were released that six people in Georgia died from drinking contaminated Coke, Coke sales would drop nationwide until the problem was cleared up.
