Is there a trick to do it, or is it not possible? My 360 is hooked up to a (brand new) 19" LCD widescreen, but the highest (correct ratio) resolution it'll send to the monitor is 1280x768. It has the option of sending higher resolutions, but not in that ratio. Why not?

Well, it's not a personal computer. It will never natively produce that resolution, ever.

You'd have to get some sort of upscale box, I've never really heard of them being made to put things at stuff beyond 480, 720, 1080. The monitor is probably already doing some scaling, as I don't think the 360 puts out a 1280x768 image, either.

Depending on your monitor, you can probably disable scaling and just play with small black borders in 1080i/p

1080p is 1920x1080. 1280x768 Is more like a 720p signal. Sounds like your LCD may be 720p native. I'd check it's specs.

If you've got the VGA cable plugged in, it does. Honestly, there's no reason why the 360 couldn't put out 1440x990, or 1680x1050 (please?).

You have the same problem the rest of us monitor guys have, and 1280x768 is probably your best bet. If your monitor has a decent internal scaler, it'll look great, but if like mine it doesn't it'll be slightly blurry. You might also try 1280x1024, the ratio is way off but it's got a 'widescreen' option that performs some trickery and actually looks pretty good.

So THAT'S what the blurriness is.

Thank god I'm upgrading to my 720p 116" screen soon, I can stop worrying about what ever the fuck my 21" monitor wants to do.

Yeah, I didn't think the 360 did 1440x990, but I was hoping someone had some trick you could do. It's set at 1280x768 and looks very sharp to me, although I might just be used to my old monitor (a three-year-old 19" fullscreen LCD). Going from a 20ms response time to 4 is very big difference as well.

    Thanks guys, thread over.
