So where do we sign up? :P

Still can’t believe it’s already over and already I am looking forward to another three days of gaming gluttony. It’s a shame that it has to come but once a year.

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

    Man, I second that.

If you saw three guys sitting on those red cushion/benches things, staring off into space, that was us. PC Freeplay wasn't nearly as cool as last year. The whole 45 minutes of waiting, then half an hour of freeplay thing is a pretty shitty system.

Wasnt freeplay last year 30 min blocks too? I dont remember nearly a 45min wait tho, but i remember getting kicked off pretty frequently after about a half hour.

Next year is supposed to be in a much bigger facility, so I think they will be able to up the number of systems and the amount of playtime.

The freeplay system did seem pretty bad, and those computers had so many probelems. During the CS tourny 3 of my teams 5 computers would not run correctly and they would not let us play on our own computers. The best advice I could give you guys though is to bring your own computers. Although if you can't, hopefully next year will be better for the PC Freeplay.

console freeplay really needs an actual room instead of like, you know, a hall.

Tabletop freeplay also needs another room. It was great that they split out tabletop tournament to it's own room, but having people demo games in the freeplay room took up a ton of tables, and it was much harder to find a table open to bust out a game of munchkin or settlers on.

Don't get me wrong, i really liked the table top demos and i hope they are back next year, but it was pretty damned cramped in the freeplay room. Tabletop really needs 3 rooms: open gaming (all tables open) tabletop demo (with people showing how to play stuff) and tabletop tournament.

BYOPC seemed to be handled better this year, i liked how prereg was gaurenteed a slot regardless of when they setup, but slots were numbered and we wernt able to setup next to people we had come with. It would be nice if prereg was gaurenteed a slot, but tablespace could be reserved in advance or arranged first come first serve. Like if you pre-reg'd a group together you got a block together in byoc.

I'd also like to see prereg allow you to book a group of people rather than just individuals.

I think its clear pax has outgrown its venue, even using the whole building.

I was personally glad that the show closed for at least a few hours. This was alot better than having prettymuch every public space in the maydenbauer filled with people crashing on benches and shit like 04 was instead of going back to their hotels.

Also a couple other suggestions, sat night, the doubltree conference rooms were very underutilized, but it was good that they were open. Next year tho, if you were to throw out 5 or 6 TV's that people could bring their own consoles down to and hook up to would be great and im sure those rooms would get alot more utilization.

Also this year, it seemed like there were a bunch more volunteer staff (enforcers) but very few of them were very well informed. I asked a couple some pretty basic questions and couldn't get answers from them. There needs to better dissemination of information to your staff so they can get the word out better.

Overall alot of improvement from last year tho, good show!

It was a headache for everyone, including tournament managers. The main concern was keeping teams together so that we knew where they all were at any one time so we didn't have to deal with missing teams or disappearing teams. The tournament admins weren't really in control of the freeplay situation. We allowed teams that had 5 BYOCers to use their own computers, but there were only two teams that met those qualifications and one preferred to use the provided tournament machines.

For those that did make it past the first day, we were able to secure just the desktops for the CS players and things ran much smoother.

My apologies to those that had to deal with the laptops and other machines -- we were anticipating many more BYOCers than actually showed up (there were about 12 total BYOCers disperesed throughout 28 teams), but should they keep Ghrog and I around to run the CS tournament again next year, we will definitely plan a tighter tournament based on the assumption that teams will not be bringing their own computers.

We got into the BYOC room at ~2:30pm on Friday. While we did have numbers on our badges, they told us to set up anywhere. The seats were not numbered.

A friend who showed up without pre-reg got a spot in the BYOC room. He set up right next to us too.

The BYOC room was usually empty of humans, if not actual computers. We bought spots so we would have stuff to do between events, but there were very few people doing anything in the BYOC room. The largest BF2 match I saw was ~42 peeps. Hardly any UT2k4. And they wouldn't let us play WoW.

The WoW thing really pissed me off. I understood the bandwidth concerns, but I'd like them to address that technological hurdle next time. But the Enforcer we talked to also made snide remarks about it not being a LAN party game. He was a complete dick about it, rather than being understanding.

You wanna know what we ended up doing most of the time? Playing with bots and playing single player games. That was retarded. It would've been nice to play some WoW between BF2 and UT2k4 stretches when those got boring due to lack of participation.

And the Meydenbauer is not very well laid out. They need to upgrade for shizzle.

Of course, I had a fucking awesome time. Do not let these comments convince you otherwise.

DJBreslin --- OMG YOU LIKE UT2K4?

So do I! We were trying to hit up people for UT2k4 action... of course, I had other duties, but we love playing UT2k4 with people.

Where do you happen to live?

Well, to be honest, I don't really play it. I entered into the UT2k4 tourney as "something to do" so I installed it the night before and wanted to play a little prior to battle.

I actually aced the first round. I came in first on my server (as Sasquatch) with players named Zite, Dingo-something and another dude I can't remember. The second round was 1v1, which I tend to do worse at, and GenocideGeek handed my ass to me. I was down like 8 or 9 kills when it ended.

I haven't played an FPS since WoW came out, so I was happy enough with my performance.

That 12 year old who advanced to round 2 was awesome.

    I live in Portland, OR.

Ahh... anybody our team (we wore Fb. tags and had red names) played, we tried to show some tips about the game... if you're interested in improving your game and getting into the competitive scene you can go to the BLE site (in my sig) and just make a post that you were at PAX and are interested in getting some UT tips...

I think most of our guys are dead tired right now (I haven't slept really since Friday) though, so it might be a while before we respond ;)

I also was not happy about the WOW thing. Getting 15 or 20 people in a raid in wow on dark iron is pretty great. Having them all in the same room would be fucking awesome.

I enjoyed some of the BYOC when there were reasonable size games going on but I REALLY REALLY wish they would have had a projector or some giant sign that said what everyone should be playing, like the game of the hour annoucement was good but that totally died.

I did get to play UT2004 for 45 minutes against some great people, wound up comming second.
