PAX Concert

edited August 2005 in PAX Archive
I failed to attend the PAX concert on Friday (I was watching a friend get third in the SSB:M tournament), but I was at Friday's. It went a little like this:
Karaoke Revolution: This was pretty cool. Some people were clearly better than others, but either way it was fun to listen. I thought it was an interesting idea to include this in the Omegatron, and I think it worked out pretty well.
Conney Lin: I really like Final Fantasy music, and I really like pianos, so no surprise that I liked the performance. The biggest problem was that wherever you went in the performance hall there were people talking, so it was a little hard to listen to, and especially get lost in, the music. If you don't care to hear the songs, leave the performing hall, they let you come back afterwards anyway.
MC Frontalot: I hear his lyrics are good, but the problem was that I couldn't understand anything he said over his accompaniment. Auditorily it wasn't anything I enjoyed, so without the (supposedly) good lyrics there was nothing for me here.
MC Chris: What did he have to do with gaming? If it's nothing I think he shouldn't return next year, and I hope it's nothing because I really don't want him back next year. You people demanded his performance? It sounded like pure crap, and all he did the whole time was swear because he could. That's all. Swearing for absolutely no goal or purpose. It actually reminded me a lot of http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php?date=2004-01-16 this, except PA was joking, and MC Chris was serious. If anybody can please explain how I am wrong about this (in a calm, intelligent, rationaly, measured way) I honestly want to hear it, because I want to learn and I am at a loss here.
Minibosses: These guys were awesome. If the concert was just them performing for four hours I wouldn't have been dissapointed at all. I am a little dissapointed, however, that their time was cut short on stage because the other performances ran long. I really hope they perform next year, and not last like this time, so if anything they can be the ones to run long. Side note: Most of the songs they performed sounded very familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what they were. If somebody could tell what the songs were that they performed I would be appreciative.

I'm fairly confident that if cows wanted to be freed, they'd tell me as much.

Do NOT front on mc chris. He wasn't being serious, he was being ironic. He's a talented, if crass, rapper, and in my opinion, hilarious. He was at PAX because he's a nerd. Because he raps about nerdy crap and makes cartoons. You're allowed to dislike him, but I think he belonged at PAX as much as any of the other artists.

That said, MC Front was rad, if a little staged and the Minibosses were surprisingly excellent.

Concerning MC Chris, I'm pretty sure that he wasn't serious and that was what was so fucking funny/awesome/cool about it.

Maybe I'm seeing this wrong, I dunno. I liked the music, but I took the swearing for what it was: satire upon the genre of rap.

Am I wrong? Am I terribly, terribly wrong?

That actually sounds very delicious. Although I assumed you're talking about somebody's balls that they pooped on, it sounds like an almond dipped in chocolate fudge, and I would like that.
    Also, thanks for staying intelligent.

I don't think MC Chris was being serious as the parent poster meant it. I hadn't heard any of frontalots stuff before the show and I was quite impressed. One of my friends told me he disliked his music before he came on stage, but I must say I hope he comes back next year.

    The concert was good.

I was the hammered guy wearing a "1-Up" shirt and swaying to-and-fro. The BO somewhere during the MC Chris portion sobered me up, but not enough to NOT piss in public. I did it while walking, but the amazing part is I did not get one drop on me. I can't even do that standing still sober. Thank you Captain Mo'.

It was after the concert. I was tired and left when Mini Bosses started doing Ghost'n'Goblins. I was walking down 108th street I think, or whatever the main road back to the Double Tree was. I thought I could use the excercise so I forwent the bus, and besides I wasn't feeling anything. It was along that chain fence on the south side. I think I could still smell the urine today.

I'd like to add I was also aiming sidways. I expected my right leg to be soaked. But even better than my pissing was the concert. At one point it hit me hard that I was in the middle of a crowd, mob even, that was rocking out to video game rock/nerd rap. It was glorious.

Oh, you have to be drunk! Ok, that explains the vast disparity between opinions. I guess any further discussion about MC Chris would be irrelevant given this newfound revelation.

And yes, I did just make this account today (well, yesterday now). Actually, I made this account just so I could create this thread, but I'm not new to forums, and less new to Penny Arcade, I've just never thought to combine the two until Sunday. I do thank you (sincerely, I'm not being an ass) though, because even though you were basically saying "noob" you refrained from that terminology.
To clarify, I'm not surprised that I'm getting crap for expressing my opinion about MC Chris. I guess more than anything I wanted to see if there was anyone outside of my friends and me who didn't like his performance.
Edit: Also, I'm not a parent, I would consider myself too young for that. I can see how it kinda looks like that given my name, sig, and what I wrote, but I'm just tired and verbose, and when I do those I sound old, and because I complained during part of my post (and name and sig again), that means I sound like a parent.
I don't see how who MC Chris is as a person, or for that matter what voice-acting he does, matters when you're thinking about his music. Case in point is Michael Jackson. He has lost all touch with reality and is in fact quite creepy, but his music's good. MC Chris is perhaps the opposite of that. /End Edit
The second-biggest reason I wrote this was to affirm that minibosses were awesome, and third (although not in any way diminutive) was making sure everyone knew to shut up during the Conney Lin performance.

I wasn't bothered that so much as the jerkwads clapping for the guy that was turning the pages in the middle of the performance. I actually moved closer to the origins of the sound after the second time they did it so I could tell them to shut the fuck up, but they knocked it off after that.

I didn't even notice these people. I did know people clapped in the middle, but I didn't make the correlation between them and teh page-turner. I guess I assumed the crowd really liked the particular tetrachord or something. At least clapping is a sign of respect, though, but I have to admit that the talking probably only bothered me so much because I'm anal like that, and I really like sinking into Final Fantasy music like an insane dork. Don't get me wrong though, the clapping definitely would have annoyed me more if I realized they were doing so for that reason.

I think the problem isn't so much that you didn't like his performance, as you don't like his music. I'm by no means an expert on concerts, but as a person that's been going to them regularly since 1997, that was definately a hell of a show, and probably in the top five performances I've seen.

Ok, I'll talk about the first couple of posts. I'm sure he was being ironic/sarcastic/jocular about rap music, but he did it so dead-on that to me it just seemed like he was what he was mocking. It's ridiculous to say that I should've spent time talking to him off-stage. Everybody needs to have a personal conversation with MC Chris to understand his music? Couldn't he instead show that his music is good in his music? Also, I fail to see what your quotes have to do with anything.

I think Bionic Monkey hit it. Because he was performing music, I figure if I don't like his music I don't like the performance. But that isn't everything though: I knew I was in trouble before he eeven started his first song. It just sounded stupid and pointless to me.

And thank you Legacy for clarifying the terminology.

I'm a person who normally loves being offended, but a good 5 minutes into MC Chris I left. His little speech about nerds being oppressed and everyone who isn't a nerd being worthless just infuriated me. I mean, hello people! did you hear him actually say "throw your fists in the air like a black panther?"

It wasn't so much a concert as it was a hate rally, and I was just shocked at how many people were just eating that up.

Well, at the risk of getting flamed too (also never registered before today) I didn't care for MC Chris. I thought he was crude, vulgar and didn't care for his ironic/sarcastic "funny" material.

He was funny, IMO, about 50% of the time during the talking portion of his show. The other 50% of the time, I wanted him off stage so I could hear the Minibosses sooner. I can't tell you about his lyrics (or MC Frontalot's) because the sound system made it impossible to discern quickly spoken/rapped words over the music.

He did give a good performance and it was clear that a lot of people enjoyed his shtick. But there is a portion (minority, likely) who did not care for it and do have the right to speak up for their opinion.

I guess my issue is if it was a joke he was fitting into it a bit too well. With the reaction of the crowd and general crowd mentality going on there I would be surprised if his fans wouldn't have actually gone with him to burn down a frat house after the show.

It also bothers me that he was marketing the "war" between jocks and nerds. Basically, jocks hate nerds because jocks think they're better then nerds. Nerds hate jocks because they think nerds are better than jocks. When people as a group think that they're better then another group, that's some kind of -ism. MC Chris might have been joking in talking down to non-nerds, but I'd be willing to wager that at least half of the crowd didn't know he was joking.

As a good Mexican friend of mine once said, "That's why Mexicans are so cool. We're pretty sure there's no master race, but if there is... we know it's not us."
