The ACLU baffles me. After that old dude plowed into a bazaar and killed like twenty people, people obviously called for more stringent testing, but the ACLU got its feathers in a rough yelling BUTTTT NOOOO OLD PEOPLE HAVE RIGHTS TOO.
Working at a gas station you see tons of stuff. What cemented my belief that everyone should be re-tested at age 60 and every 5 years after was the old man who basically stumbled around my store at .2 miles an hour for 30 minutes while staring vacantly forward and drooling (no joke) before buying a push pop and leaving. (He drove away)
Also at another one of the Wilson farms in my area a couple of years ago this old man pinned a woman between his car and a wall, and he kept trying to back up but he wasnt shifting into reverse. So he hit the woman, then rolled back a few inches, then hit the gas again slamming the woman into the wall. This went on for about a minute before a cashier literally ripped the old man out of the car and threw him to the ground so he could back the car up. The woman was paralyzed.
i think drivers should be allowed to purchase (at no small fee) the right to take an advanced driving test. if passed, this test would give the driver the right to exceed the speed limit by a set amount. along with the test fee, the state would charge annual renewal fees, and every other year the driver would have to be retested (at no charge).
If the driver is in an at-fault accident, or is pulled over for speeding, he would lose his advanced license and the right to try again for 2 years.
i like this
it's win-win. i don't know anybody who is in such a hurry that they would risk the absolute right to speed by 15 MPH by going 20 over. meanwhile, the state pulls in a whole lot more money than it probably does through tickets. additionally, by tagging the vehicles of the people who pass, state troopers can ignore speeders who don't represent a real danger and focus on those who haven't proven their ability to speed safely.
probably wouldn't get enough people eligible or able to pay to offset how much money they make off tickets, though
Guy I know was involved in a minor head on collision when turning a corner on his final test. It was completely not his fault. Without prompt from the instuctor he parked safely, got out, handled the insurance with the other driver, got back and returned to the exam hall. Test ended less than 1/4 way in and he passed because he displayed mature awareness and considerate driving skill. Brilliant.
you'd have a point if that was even remotely true. There are no "bonus points" in a driving test. You start with a pass and get marks taken off for mistakes.
oh they probably should re-test everyone every 3-5 years, but the tests are such a joke anyway it probably wouldn't matter..
I seriously think they should inspect any car more than 10 years old every 4-5 years. I have seen some seriously beat up pieces of shit on the road. no bumpers, smoke pouring out the back, suspension squeaking like a mouse in heat... etc...
as for "speeding" tickets, they should do away with the whole thing entirely and just mail out tickets randomly. it would have the same effect.

I disagree
maybe not in all states, but in some of the more populous ones, I think you would by a lot
Whatever you do don't show weakness or cry if you fail. They feed off your suffering and the tears are like a delicious gravy. Like a rich west country sauce over four faggots.
Our high school offered a learners program and some kid managed to go off road, drive up a guide wire for a power line, and then proceeded to flip the Buick he was driving

Well unless you're a hot chick with saucy boobies. Then the crying will work.
considering the revenue they get from speeding tax... oops I mean tickets... that's probably low.
remember a cop can setup in a prime location with a radar gun (paid for by your insurance company btw) and pretty much pull over anyone he wants and give them a $100-200 ticket. say at least 4-5 an hour, all day long, every single day.

i was talking best case scenario
cops in my area have doubled over the last year and we have neither the traffic or crime rate to warrant it, so i figure there's gotta be some way they're turning a profit
the few times i've "almost" hit someone, they were all eighty and looked like their motor vehicle confused the hell out of them
This.
We almost fucking t-boned a guy in driver's ed. We come to a 4-way stop, it's our turn to go, and we go.
Asshole McOldperson decides that now is the perfect time to try and shoot across in front of us.
I think it was a deadly combination of old person driving that car, and an Asian girl driving our car.

Oh, and stare at your proctor as much as possible.
Just the blank stare of a sociopath, deciding whether or not it would be worth it to kill someone.
Oh, Fari, I get it now. I thought it was like, he followed the power line down the road or something, and then flipped a Buick somehow.
The Buick Rendezvous is a decent car, by the way.

Let me stay in denial, goddammit.
Mom's Buick Rendezvous is the only thing I'm driving until at least February.
Plus it's going to come in handy when we need to transport a small tree for the senior prank.

it's totally manageable
it just has absolutely none of the things i look for in a car
like tending to stay in one piece most of the time
or looking decent
or having an interior that isn't so grey and drab that jumping out at freeway speeds would probably be more fun than remain inside

The Buick has stayed in one piece for however long we've had it.
Don't ask me how long that is, I can't remember. It's been 4 years, probably more.
I failed mine because some retard decided to drive right in front of me on my green light, and almost hit me. my instructer doesnt say a word, so i think that maybe im still safe. not so.
he waits till the end, me trying the whole time then "see this red check on my board? it means you failed"

the ACLU has the unique ability to view everybody as equal, despite history and/or experience

i envision the "preferred driver's license" to costing around $500 yearly here, bare minimum
