The Heart Symbol?

Why did this symbol become the universal symbol of the heart? It doesn't look like a real heart. Just been curious cause it doesn't make sense to me.

    Because this wouldn't look very good on a greeting card?

    But if you look at it, remove all the veins, fatty tissue and assorted anatomy, and just keep what's in deep red, the muscle tissue that's exposed does look rather like the traditional V-day heart.

    Because your heart physically hurts when emotional trauma is involved. Well for me it does anyway.

    Not sure about the positive side when the heart "Swells" haha, haven't gotten to that yet.

    The "heart" shape could also be considered to depict features of the human female body, such as the female's pubic mound or spread vulva.

    Now that I think about it, it does look more like a vagina than a heart.
