I already own or owned half the games in the Rockstar pack, or I'd get that. I never did get around to trying VC or SA though. And my curiousity wants to get Manhunt.

It's nuts...in the course of like two weeks, Steam went from something I barely noticed, to basically a huge list of games I'm gonna play...eventually. It was like a perfect storm of Orange Box for xmas, Steam sale timed for my new xmas cash, and now this. They really know the combo to get my wallet, I'll tell ya.

I've basically never played any of the GTA3 games (apart from a couple of 5-10 minute sessions of being shown it by a friend), but the combination of post-holiday money in my pocket and a 10%-off deal on Steam are making my hands twitch. If I were to buy only one of the three, which one should I get?

Well, you probably won't be able to mod the Steam version of GTA:SA, assuming they ported over the gimped version and not the original.

Gimped version? What, they prevented mod usage with San Andreas? I'm not even sure how that could be done.

Or why for that matter. I'm not disagreeing, I'm genuinely curious as to why they would do something like that. The GTA games have had a pretty decent mod community on the PC as far as I'm aware (the GTA games were never really my thing, so I can't say I've got 1st hand experience of that aspect).

The "second edition" that they needed to release because of the Hot Coffee media circus ran some checksum on various files (gta3.img, the scripting file that I don't remember the name of, a couple others) to make sure they hadn't been modified. I don't know if the community ever got around those (I didn't much care; I bought a copy at launch and didn't have that problem).

I posted this in help and advice, but maybe I will get some help from here. I need to have this problem fixed ASAP.

I need to make a map for hammer. Unfortunately, it is not working. The SDK launcher is not working. I tried to run it from the bin folder for both episode 1 and orange box, but It gives me this error "This application has failed to start because Steam.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I have tried reinstalling, deleting everything first and no go. I need to use it for a project, which the teacher gave us very short notice. I tried copying the file and placing it in the EP1 and OB bin, with no succes. I also tried placing the file in the main bin and still no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been playing it on and off for about a month now. With decent players, it's fantastic. Unfortunately on public servers there are always some players who aren't very civic minded, and tend to do all they can to help the zombies to victory. The Zombie Master mechanic is fantastic, as the satisfaction from killing everyone via clever use of the four, soon to be five, kinds of zombie and any number of traps can't be beat. By all means give it a go.

My suspicion is that they're going to do something with the Combine homeworld in Episode 3 that makes it worth pointing out again that "there's no way I can survive in that environment."
Very good point. Maybe the teleportation technology on the Borealis throws Gordon onto some Combine world temporarily, or some such. Still, as august put it, I still would like to get Breen back. Somehow I'd like him to make a return, as he was an honestly memorable character.

I was thinking about how the rebels have the IP address or whatever of the Combine homeworld now, so presumably they'd want to do something with that.

But yeah, Breen was a great character. There were some awesome lines in the leak that they didn't end up using, hell of a voice actor.

I forgot about the address of the Combine Homeworld. Now that they're heading towards what appears to be some sort of massively powerful teleportation rig... I think you might be onto something. It would certainly put the H.E. in H.E.V. though. There's also the chilling warning that Breen gave Eli and Alyx as he was about to send them over. If the Stalkers are any indication, I'm not sure I even want to see what the Combine Homeworld looks like. D:

Am I the only one who just couldn't get into San Andreas? I like the GTA games, the run around do whatever you want gameplay appeals to me, but after a few hours I put SA down and haven't picked it up since.

I'm not into rap or being "gansta," but I love mafia/gangster movies so I was into the first two games. I too think I'll have to get Vice City for the Back to the Future mod.

Yeah I wasn't much into the whole roll with a posse thing in SA. Also I never really liked the main character. The previous games had a real lone manic causing trouble thing that I enjoyed. I hope the 4th one goes back to that style of character.

    It's not a dream...

It's the American nightmare. A cold... dark nightmare, and no matter how much you struggle, you can never wake up.

    [/Paynespeak]

Anyway, I'd recommend the Cinema 2.0 mod for Max Payne 2 once you've played through it. Re-balances all the weapons and makes the game harder, but more fun. The heavy metal soundtrack ducing Bullet Time takes some getting used to though, I'll admit, although IIRC there's a way to get rid of it if it's really getting to you (either a tweak or a file deletion).

Max Payne is harder than I remember. Or it could be that I've just been playing easy games where you don't die very often lately. Also I remember when Max Payne impressed me with it's graphics. It does have decent textures especially for the time, but you really notice the lack of facial expressions and lip syncing.

My own problem with the GTA games, is that I love them in principle, but always seem to find a point where I want to be able to do more than is available, but the only thing stopping me getting there is some frustrating-as-hell mission, so I just give up and stop playing. I hear people talking about flying planes and helicopters, doing all sorts of awesome crap throughout the city, and I'm like "well that's nice, here's me in my crapmobile trying to drive from point A to point B in under 2 minutes for some guy who's a jerk who needs his pizza in a hurry or whatever, but I have to keep the car intact too. That's fun."
