Nah, the specifics aren't important. They dangle a carrot (new/improved weapons, alternate play style), and people then rush off to farm the achievements, which, in turn, gets them playing medic (for perhaps the first time), showing them how interesting the character is.
So, I'm really, really, really tempted to get the Heretic Pack from Steam. Has anyone had any experience with it, and more importantly will it work on Windows XP? I can't think why it shouldn't, but nothing like being extra certain.
Well if you download something like the jDoom engine, the Doom Games, Heretic, Hexen and it's expansion will run with no problem if you use it, without fiddling with DOSbox or anything. Hexen 2 takes some fiddling to run in XP, but I forget exactly what it entails.
I remember the reason for tying weapons to achievements was to give the non-achievement-whore players incentive to try and go for it.
Of course, it was a brilliantly terrible idea after all, but who could have predicted it (aside from a bunch of sensible players who hate fucking unlockables)?
Pretty much. It made it hard to get a decent balanced team going.
I play Heavy almost exclusively so I don't even care about getting the weapons, and it was nice to always have a medic, but making progress towards points was ridiculous for a couple weeks.
I like that they are adding weapons, and I wouldn't even be pissed if they were tied to like 1 achievement, but when you have to grind for days to get them all it's pretty retarded. Some of them are just terrible to get and force you to play in a way that might not be best for your team.
You mean like the "once you get uber, kill 5 people" one? Yeah, once I get uber (I almost exclusively play either medic or pyro) I use it asap, because I know my impending death is on its way.
I fucking love unlockables. It brought me back to play TF2 to give it a shot.
They made TF2 less fun to play for several weeks.
Not trying to be nitpicky (OR AM I!?!) but even on pubs there were only medic orgies on most servers for about 2 weeks. Died off pretty quick after that (for the most part I think). This is my opinion and I'm sticking to it!
What I'm saying is, do they really want medics to, for example.... get an Uber, and then ignore everyone on your team on the off-chance they'll end up bonesawing five guys before they die??
No no no no NO no no no no.
I like it just because it gets people playing differently than they might. Which in some cases is an improvement.
Also maybe you should relise that you dont actually get anything when you win :P
Achievements are fine, the problems are making ones that encourage you to do stupid stuff and tying them to the unlockables.
Can you even begin to fathom how weird the Pyro Achievements are going to be? It's going to make some of the Medic Achievements easier to get due to hordes of unskilled, suicidal Pyros, but I worry for people who play Pyro normally.
I don't think achievements and unlockables have any place in multiplayer games.
Achievments I can deal with, because while it might be annoying to see someone do something stupid to get them, plenty of people really enjoy them. Unlockables though are stupid, stupid, stupid. I don't play as much TF2 anymore because I just feel depressed knowing that if I ever want to be medic I'm going to be gimped.

That's not really true. The Blutsauger is the only Medic unlockable that is truly game changing, and it's fairly easy to get. The Critzkrieg is fun but not outright better than the regular Medigun, and the Ubersaw is not game changing.
Unlockables are only really going to be an issue if they're extremely hard to get and completely game changing.

They Definitely are not gimped and it does give you an option to go for them if you want and if you don't than I don't know why it would turn you off TF2

Also, impractical Medic Achievements 4 life yo.
All steam games are patched to run on windows. Dunno if the Heretic pack includes Hexen or just heretic 1/2, but I loves me some Hexen.

I think the idea was that there were some achievements for stuff you do in regular gameplay and some stuff for when you're just screwing around.

It's got Hexen 1 and Hexen 2.
You can see why I'm excited for it, especially given it's only ten dollars.

Heretic 2 isn't part of the bundle I think because it's a Raven game, not id.
Neither is Hexen 2: Portal of Praevus. A shame really, as Heretic 2 is fantastic in every imaginable way, and there's never such a thing as too much Hexen 2.

Yeah, I wish Portal of Praevus was included in the pack since I never saw it in stores when it was out (I was too young to have any money) and I always wanted to play it. Hexen 2 is one of my favorite PC games of all time.

He's saying that not having them makes you gimped. With regard to the blutsauger, this is a definite fact, and many would argue that merely having the option to choose the critzkrieg or the ubersaw is a distinct advantage.
The funny thing is I don't really care much about the blutsauger, and as long as someone has the kritzkrieg I don't care if it's me, but I want that ubersaw. I want is bad. And of course I'll never get it because I would have to uber a heavy who punches two people or something.

I actually did that today, weirdly. I was healing a Heavy, he ran out of ammo for his chaingun and started on his shotgun, then I think he ran out of shotgun ammo (how the hell he did I don't know) just as I ubered him in a room full of enemies, who he started punching
Steamcloud is a terrific idea. God knows how many saves I've lost through the years.
Hopefully it was the idea submission that I sent over a year ago that triggered this. At least I hope, for my ego's sake.
The idea Ticket I sent basically described a Valve central server backup of your saves, which are tied to your Steam account.

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.
What intrigues me is that HeXen 2 has coop multiplayer. I'll buy the HeXen + Heretic Pack and see how it works.
If it leads to a Game On, well so be it.
Dibs on the Necromancer.
I call Paladin.
My roommate and I played quite a bit of this co-op awhile back. Good times.
I call Crusader.
I've been trying to subtly get a friend of mine to buy Hexen 2 or one of the Quakes so he can do some multiplayer even on his crappy laptop. It hasn't been working, sadly.
I call Pala...crap, I call Crusa...crud, I call Necro....dammit.

Buy it and gift it to him (it's not like they're expensive or anything).
I'm pretty sure that you can have more than one of the same class, it should be okay. :P

Yes. The "\o/" was funny but the pipe is best.
They made TF2 less fun to play for several weeks.
Was it THEY, or YOU?
But really, why? Because everyone and their mums were packin' the medi-gun?

Yeah, I see where you're coming from.
I, for one, am going to laugh so hard when, after mastering all their achievements, every class can replace one of their weapons with a grenade.

Your server...it doesn't respond!
EDIT: Also, what does Synergy offer over Follow Freeman?
3DS Friend Code: 2707-1614-5576
PAX Prime 2014 Buttoneering!

Then the uber ran out and we died
Dunno, what does Follow Freeman do?
And the IP changes, you may have the wrong one. Check my OP for the newest.
All of them are Raven games....
Follow Freeman is another HL2 coop mod, it's the first one I ever tried, and won (or was in the running for, don't remember) Mod of the Year on ModDB.
