Nah, the specifics aren't important. They dangle a carrot (new/improved weapons, alternate play style), and people then rush off to farm the achievements, which, in turn, gets them playing medic (for perhaps the first time), showing them how interesting the character is.

So, I'm really, really, really tempted to get the Heretic Pack from Steam. Has anyone had any experience with it, and more importantly will it work on Windows XP? I can't think why it shouldn't, but nothing like being extra certain.

Also, impractical Medic Achievements 4 life yo.

Well if you download something like the jDoom engine, the Doom Games, Heretic, Hexen and it's expansion will run with no problem if you use it, without fiddling with DOSbox or anything. Hexen 2 takes some fiddling to run in XP, but I forget exactly what it entails.

I remember the reason for tying weapons to achievements was to give the non-achievement-whore players incentive to try and go for it.

Of course, it was a brilliantly terrible idea after all, but who could have predicted it (aside from a bunch of sensible players who hate fucking unlockables)?

Pretty much. It made it hard to get a decent balanced team going.

I play Heavy almost exclusively so I don't even care about getting the weapons, and it was nice to always have a medic, but making progress towards points was ridiculous for a couple weeks.

I like that they are adding weapons, and I wouldn't even be pissed if they were tied to like 1 achievement, but when you have to grind for days to get them all it's pretty retarded. Some of them are just terrible to get and force you to play in a way that might not be best for your team.

You mean like the "once you get uber, kill 5 people" one? Yeah, once I get uber (I almost exclusively play either medic or pyro) I use it asap, because I know my impending death is on its way.

Not trying to be nitpicky (OR AM I!?!) but even on pubs there were only medic orgies on most servers for about 2 weeks. Died off pretty quick after that (for the most part I think). This is my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

What I'm saying is, do they really want medics to, for example.... get an Uber, and then ignore everyone on your team on the off-chance they'll end up bonesawing five guys before they die??

No no no no NO no no no no.
I like it just because it gets people playing differently than they might. Which in some cases is an improvement.

Also maybe you should relise that you dont actually get anything when you win :P

Can you even begin to fathom how weird the Pyro Achievements are going to be? It's going to make some of the Medic Achievements easier to get due to hordes of unskilled, suicidal Pyros, but I worry for people who play Pyro normally.

I, for one, am going to laugh so hard when, after mastering all their achievements, every class can replace one of their weapons with a grenade.

Achievments I can deal with, because while it might be annoying to see someone do something stupid to get them, plenty of people really enjoy them. Unlockables though are stupid, stupid, stupid. I don't play as much TF2 anymore because I just feel depressed knowing that if I ever want to be medic I'm going to be gimped.

That's not really true. The Blutsauger is the only Medic unlockable that is truly game changing, and it's fairly easy to get. The Critzkrieg is fun but not outright better than the regular Medigun, and the Ubersaw is not game changing.

Unlockables are only really going to be an issue if they're extremely hard to get and completely game changing.

They Definitely are not gimped and it does give you an option to go for them if you want and if you don't than I don't know why it would turn you off TF2

He's saying that not having them makes you gimped. With regard to the blutsauger, this is a definite fact, and many would argue that merely having the option to choose the critzkrieg or the ubersaw is a distinct advantage.

I actually did that today, weirdly. I was healing a Heavy, he ran out of ammo for his chaingun and started on his shotgun, then I think he ran out of shotgun ammo (how the hell he did I don't know) just as I ubered him in a room full of enemies, who he started punching

Then the uber ran out and we died
