Are all games going to support it or will it just be the ones that decide to use it, like the Steam Acheivement community thing, as in no one really but Valve themselves?

It's part of steamworks which means any dev can use it for free.

I think he wants to know if it'll work with games already on Steam, without them receiving updates from the developer.

Ya, so that makes me think that if it's just part of Steamworks then no one will use it as no one is really using it at all now.

They've only just released steamworks, they did announce it before it was finished.
Its pretty good, although a lot more time is spent in space instead of infantry combat. This is mainly because you cant get inside a hanger without destroying the corvettes, as in, theres a invisible wall there, it wont let you.
Some people on the server I was playing on said the infantry combat was a lot worse between versions, but I was having to much fun using the flamethrower on large groups of people.
Space combat is actually a quite a bit better in the new version, theres a lot more depth to it now that theres a lot more ships and types of ships in space, bombers doing bombing runs on the corvettes while dodging flak fire and the seven fighters after him, etc. Theres also a unique ship to each side, a Interceptor for the UTF, and a Heavy Fighter for the NGM (It has goddamn flak cannons, yes.)

So yeah, its pretty good.
I'll try it out.
My only problem with Eternal Silence 2 was the lack of players, but this might be different.
Company of Heroes really pissed me off this past week. I bought it and the exp pack off Steam just before I left for a week-long vacation knowing that I would not have Internet access. I went into offline mode and could play all my games offline just fine except for CoH, which kept telling me "Cannot verify media". Pissed me off something fierce that I could have probably pirated it and played just fine.
EDIT: proper grammar are good
EDIT 2: New Steam client update just now:
Fixed games failing to launch on Windows Vista from a fresh game install
Possible fix for my problem? Either way, I'm home now, where there's always Internet.
Not sure what verify means. I wouldn't have thought I'd need to do anything to use the game offline as long as I bought it and then used the "Go offline" feature.
What TychoCelchuu said, basically. So long as you've booted it up while connected, it should cross off the 'authenticate' line on its to-do list.
It's exactly the same as needing to put in the CD-Key during installation, except that the CD-Key is being retrieved from a remote server and tied to your account.

When Steamworks starts to exist anyway..
edit: in that no game uses it yet in public and you still have to contact them, and you get no reply..

If you by "games in public" mean games that has been released, you are wrong.
A number of non-Valve games, such as Audiosurf and Ninja Reflex: Steamworks Edition, has achievements which is a part of Steamworks. In addition, some time back Red Orchestra received a Steamworks update making it use the Steam server browser and friends system.

All of those games developers have pre-existing relationships with Valve.

I'm tempted, but it doesn't have the Suds seal of approval yet. If he and other people declare it awesome, I'll get that and UT2k4 tonight.
Yes
...although not as many players/server as was a year ago.
edit: okay it's Red Orchestra time for everyone with a mouse, keyboard, and brain! And $5.

- either more ships, or customizable ones. Different weapon layouts, etc
- ability to command those gunboats/corvettes.
- gunners need a radar. Or, at least, a way to figure out where the shots are coming from.
- infantry combat feels a little weak, at the moment. Fun, but hard to tell what killed you, where they were, things like that.
... and, in the realm of competely dreaming, have it more like a fleet than just the stationary 3 + base layout. All of those games developers have pre-existing relationships with Valve.
It's my poor man's CoD 4 ^_^
It's just so well made, it's a shame it's not my type of game
Not that I'd know how to use it, but where do you get it? I tried looking in the Source SDK and didn't see anything new.
