This is my last ditch effort, but here goes:

So Steam has decided not to load any games, just saying "This game is currently unavailable." I've tried everything that the steam support advises, and everything else I could find on forums, including the "make a shortcut on your desktop" fix. Nothing seems to work. If it's any help, I'm running Windows through bootcamp on my mbp. My other games work fine, and TF2 was working well for a while, too, until a month or two ago when this started happening. I've reinstalled/re-downloaded TF2 countless times, as well as Steam itself, and nothing works.

    Any suggestions?

Yeah, the deals right now are pretty great -- and end on the 31st, so there's a sense of urgency. :P

    I just bought Civ 4.

By the way, there was only one guy in the PA group chat room, and he didn't answer. Would someone send me an invite? My Steam ID is "gilrain", just like here.

Did you delete your clientregistry.blob and try again? Are you running XP through Bootcamp or Vista?

Sometimes this problem can occur in Vista if you don't have the right administrative privileges so you have to run Steam as an administrator. Could be something similar on XP.

I know this isn't really the thread for this(because there isn't one) I just recently got a hankering for some Rome Total War action, I couldn't find my cds and Steam was having a sale where I could net RTW, BI, and RTW:A for 27$.

So I downloaded RTW with fond thoughts of wasting hours in a campaign in and out of battle, managing my cities, etc... with a rig that is much more powerful than I owned 2 years ago.

But to my horror I am getting random crashes to desktop in battle mode. Sometimes I can play a battle for 20ish minutes(never played one longer) and have no problems.

Sometimes 3 minutes in I crash. I can go through a couple of battles, or none.

The only thing I am remotely sure of is the crashes only happen when I'm panning the camera. Moving it with the arrow keys seems fair play. And most of the time panning is fine. It's really disheartening to be kicking total ass for 10 minutes only to lose all your progress to a completely random crash.

Because of the nature of the crashes I (know)don't think Steam has any hand in these crashes. But we don't have a RTW thread, and making on for this seems unnecessary(although I will if I need to).

    Vista Home Premium 64bit
    A64 X2 4800+ 2.5G
    2gigs dual channel ram
PNY Geforce 8600 GT 512 meg
Onboard Sound(also ruled this out by totally muting everything and still getting the crashes)

I tried dxlevels 70, 80, and 81. No difference. I also tried various graphical settings in game to no effect either.

edit: I am tinkering with the idea of rolling bakc my drivers. But that'd be a bitch because I like to play current games(TF2, Bioshock) on this as well, and I don't want to have to keep switching drivers.

Given that Episode 3 is the end of an arc for Half-Life 2, I'd be prepared to guarantee that an Advisor is going to be horribly slaughtered either by Gordon or Alyx. Either the Vortigaunts will somehow get rid of the Advisor's telekinesis, or a Fantastic Technological Solution will be given that allows for cybernetic grub slaughtering.

    Thoughts on Episode 3
I’m sure we’re all in agreement that Ep3 will likely revolve around the Borealis and it’s potential impact upon the Half-Life universe as both Gordon and the Combine (who now know about it thanks to eating Eli’s brain) race to claim it. The biggest unknown right now is what exactly the Borealis is. What it is and what it is capable of is probably, IMO, the most important determiner for how the story is going to end up.

It’s a fair shake it has something to do with teleportation. Between Apterture’s other projects (The handheld portal device) and the fact that it disappeared only to show up later imbedded within a wall of ice. Eli said it could cause another Black Mesa, but wether he was talking about specific effects or just magnitude is probably up to interpretation.

Anywho, being that the ship is likely associated with teleportation in some way, we are either left to conclude that it’s power deals directly with teleportation; or that there’s something else on the ship of consequence. Since that something else can quite literally be anything. (GlaDOS for home computers? :D) I’ll stick to the teleportation.

Quickest assumption is that the ship is designed for transportation through teleportation; which would provide an extremely nice tactical advantage to whomever found it. However, unless it can do a resonance cascade, I don’t see how it would be that scale of dangerous. (Hazardous to the crew, sure, but to the world at large?)

Possibly it’s supposed to be a weapon with teleportation at the base.. Teleport your foes into walls, or teleport some magma on top of them. Though this still doesn’t sound like it’s world threatening.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find another version of GlaDOS aboard (perhaps the cause of the disaster the befell the Borealis), possibly with the ability to generate portals, forcing Gordon to face mindbending puzzles and a sinister and insane AI in order to reach his goals.

Ultimately, I would wager that the Borealis would need to be destroyed, though it would be spectacular if the player got a choice in whether or not to keep it to use against the Combine, or to destroy it and be sure it won’t cause another Black Mesa.

Judith Mossman should have a larger role in this episode. I’m betting she’ll be the main source of backstory and exposition. I also suspect that if the Borealis is set to be destroyed, she’ll stay behind and be the one to do after finding out Eli is dead.

I imagine the Combine see the Borealis as a vital necessity after losing the Citadel and failing to reestablish contact with their homeworld. Perhaps it will allow them to circumvent the satellite system the resistance has set in place. Either way I’d imagine they’ll pull out a lot of stops to get to before the resistance does. I fully expect to beat up some Advisors on the way.

Finally, I’m really curious how Valve will start episode 3.. Ep2 ended on an unusual spot, wherein there isn’t a direct break. There still stuff to be done before they can even leave. People need to be notified of Eli’s death; likely a funeral; finally Gordon and Alyx need to fly quite a distance to get to their location. We haven’t skipped any of Gordon’s experiences since HL1. (Aside from what he dreams when he’s knocked unconscious as he frequently is) so will Ep3 start at the end of the helicopter ride as he and Alyx reach their destination; with Eli’s funeral and the trip being nothing more than snapshot flashback (or even forgotten altogether), or will we see these things briefly before we get to the game proper.

Or perhaps Gordon just got knocked out at the end of Ep2 and will wake up in Ep3 at the end of the ride. :D

Well, there's only one thing I truly want out of Episode 3.
Doctor Wallace Breen. That delusional, psychopathic monster is in some kind of Combine supplied body right now, and if his panic at the Advisor's suggestion is anything to go by, it's a little far removed from his original one. Much like the Combine Advisors, I would like to kill or do something truly horrible to Breen.

    Also...
The Borealis is probably some sort of teleportation rig. My thoughts on Eli bugging out at the thought of using it is probably due to the energy involved. The Resonance Cascade opened up a portal storm to Xen, and it wasn't even strictly designed as a teleportation device. Whatever's aboard the Borealis could end up much worse, especially given Aperture Science's spotty safety record.

    Finally...
I would pay good, hard money (And I will regardless...) to hear Alyx or Judith trading banter with whatever demented iteration of GLaDOS is onboard the Borealis. Tell me it wouldn't be pure, solid gold. Or even better, if the Overwatch AI that the Combine use gets countermanded by GLaDOS. In a way, that would be even better.

That's one of the things I find interesting about the HL games...depending on whether or not Gordon had any sense of time in hibernation, from HL 1 to Ep 2 he hasn't had any sleep, other than a few minutes of unconciousness, or even a bathroom break...I hope the suit's got a hose for that or something.

All I can think of, when I consider going from HL 1 to HL 2 to Ep 1 to Ep 2, without a break, is that Gordon's having the worst week in history.

Uh, he's most likely dead at this point, as the Dark Fusion reactor was destroyed before he teleported to the other side (which is where he was going to receive his host body, so he could survive in that environment.) Last we saw of Breen was him falling to his death as the reactor fizzled out... and then blew up.

It's amazing, isn't it? You'd think he'd have had a nervous breakdown by this point. The H.E.V. Mark V probably detects elevated levels of stress and just pumps out more morphine. Gordon's probably more or less high all the time.

    Well...
They did replay his panic in Episode 1, and I'd optimistically like to think they did it for a reason. Maybe the Combine grabbed a copy of his personality, and even though his body was obliterated his mind lives on? I could've sworn I heard that Valve mentioned they had the replay of Breen's message for a reason, even if they didn't want to give away the reason immediately.
