I get off work this Wed at 6 Central. Would anyone be interested in getting together to do something? Talk about characters at the least? Or doing a quick one-shot together? If you guys can get characters created in a thread here together (or go to IRC before Wed) I could run a short Spirit of the Century (or a very quick and dirty Shadowrun) adventure. Alternatively, SotC character creation is fun enough that we could just do that Wed and do a one-shot some other day.

Just trying to think of stuff to get us all together and mingle, since we've just been in this thread since November. Shake off the cobwebs and rust and all that.

I've got this wednesday off, but odds are good that I'll spend it drinking at a karaoke bar. If not, however, I wouldn't mind hanging out in IRC.

Looks like we still have two slots open. I changed the title to give people an update on what is going on. I'll post IRC info in here on Tuesday.

Plan is to all meet in IRC, then to start the story with one character, and just keep on introducing the others, 15 minutes at a time. Which of course means some pretty fast thinking from you guys as to why your characters would be in the starting location for the Saga.

But I have great faith in you guys. And hey, at least we are not meeting in a Tavern.

Sorry. Yeah I knew you were out, I was just saying that you had the most combat focused character.

But it would have been great if you could have joined in. But if you've got Exalted, just wait a couple of months for me to Get Abyssals, Dreams of the First Age, and the Scroll of Kings. I got this whole, Martial Arts/ Massive war with the Mask of Winters thing in my brain. Be glad to have you.

So, on the regular PA IRC spot, right? Post the channel name here when you're ready? Last time I was here, the meeting spot was still called ODAM. I can bring the dicebot if you want, mine works pretty well.

I was doing some reading up on Scion, and is it accurate that Scion: Hero only details 7 spells in all, as far as magic is concerned? It sounded very much like White Wolf basically phoned in half the book, leaving it to the players to create the content with little guidance. Am I way off in this understanding?

Magic in Scion is VERY different than D&D or Exalted or pretty much any other RPG game.

Specifically, Scion Magic deals with manipulating Fate(which is pretty much the core component of Scion) and nothing else. So Magic isn't throwing around fireballs, it's about making yourself a bit luckier for a scene or connecting two people together via Fate, or manipulating Fate to have the bank robbery happen when you get to the bank(or maybe AFTER, so you don't have to deal with it) rather than before, when you can't stop it.

There are 24 other Purviews, all of which could be considered magical, 22 of which have specific powers(Mystery and Prophecy work a little different,) and each one of those has 3 Boons detailed, since you can only get those first three boons with the Legend scores that are detailed in Hero. Magic got a pretty good deal with 7 spells, since you still have to pay XP for each spell you pick up, aside from a free one every time you increase your Magic purview.

Then there's the 9 Epic Attributes, each of them having around 4 Knacks. So... yeah, there's a lot of powers detailed in the book. Maybe not as many as in Exalted, but that's no big surprise. Demigod and God both expand upon the Purviews and Knacks as well, so that's even more room for you to play with.

Setting-wise(the biggest complaint I've heard about Scion,) Scion: Hero is very sparse, but that's because the assumed setting is modern-day earth, with people unaware of the supernatural. If you need a setting guide for that, something is wrong with you. Demigod and God have a lot more information on various mythical locations and the Underworld and the Overworld, so once you get to the level where you're actually traveling to supernatural areas inhabited by powerful supernatural creatures, the information is right there.

Hero really focuses on the important part of the starting Scion story: the various Gods/Goddesses, the starting powers, and the Titanspawn that are out there.

    tl;dr
No, it's not really that sparse. There's 70-odd powers that count as 'magic' in the book, even if there's only 7 in the specific 'Magic' purview.

Okay, awesome. For a second there I was thinking "I'm the progeny of a God, and I don't get to sling some spells?" but that makes more sense.

Man, I'd love to get in on this, but there isn't a local game store (or at least there isn't one that sells much in English) and it takes weeks to get anything delivered from the 'states over here. Ah well, maybe someone will do another one.

Okay so with me, Krata, Cytorak, Reynolds, and JerikTelorian... is there anyone I'm missing? Looks like one spot is open.

Actually Jeriktelorian has not responded in a while. I am not assuming he is in. Will PM him to make sure though.

Which brings us down to 3. Reynolds, Krata and you. And that changes things. Ideal group was 6. We're now at 50 %. Gonna postpone the game till next Wednesday (2/13/08). Sorry. Game was going to be for a party of 6, which means duties could have been divided and shared.

But you all know why we are here and how we got here, so now I'm asking more of you, maybe all. Cause make no mistake. We will have a Scion Game in which people rise from Heroes to Gods, fighting tentacled spawn all the way. So no more runnin, I aim to misbehave.

Seriously, this changes things. To be able to handle all the stuff I will be asking you to do, I will probably have to give you extra BP to enhance your characters. With a group of 3, your gonna have to be generalists. Or at least dual specialists. Physical/Mental or Physical/Social or some other combination. A character would have to be not just survivable, but decent if not good in combat, and good at something else.

I am hoping we can attract some more players. Even more, I am hoping that JerikTelorian is still willing to play. In which case an BP to buff characters will still happen but be minimal (Right now I am thinking 30 pts. If Jerik is still in, that could drop to 15 or so). But I do have a grand, dangerous, tricky adventure in mind and while I am willing to run it with 3 characters, I still want to keep all the challenges, which will mean more from each of your characters.

I was PMing Reynolds and he said that a delay sucked ,because we had been waiting long enough already. I thought, you know what, he's right.

I still intend to start the game next Wednesday. But I am also intending to be on the PA channel on IRC, tonight, a 6 pm CST. If you guys wants to log on and talk about the game. We could run over the intro setting and come up with reasons for your characters to be there. I will also explain some of the house rules of the game and stipulate how many bonus points your characters will be getting to compensate for a 4 player team running a 6-player adventure.

We'll discuss the house rules I discussed tonight and the setting this wednesday.

Meeting place will be #odam. The room still works.

Oh and add 15 bonus points to your characters, per Scion Hero rules. Don't try to push yourself to Demigod status yet.

If you guys have any questions, please post em.

I don't really know where to spend extra points. Probably just buy some more skills, a lot of my non-main ones are pretty low. Besides that, is there anything I'm missing? I'll go ahead and paste my sheet here, I forgot if I already did. Then I can just update this post when I figure out what to change.

    Bonus Points:

    Notes
    Birthrights
Rune-bag 3: This bag contains several etched runes that can the thrown onto a surface and read, or otherwise used similarly, and allows access to the purviews of Death, Mystery, and Prophecy.

The Spear of Insight 3: This long spear has pieces of the rope Odin hung himself with in ancient days woven into the grips. It allows access to the War purview, and seems to unerringly see through an opponent’s defenses in combat (+2 Accuracy, already noted above).

    Boons
Death Senses: Olin can perceive ghosts even when they are not manifested. In addition, he can tell from the body of a deceased what killed them, in a general sense (ie, poison, but not specific poison, or suffocation, but not whether they were hung by the next or strangled). No cost, no roll.

Blessing of Bravery: Olin can bless his allies before a combat, granting them an extra Willpower point and two temporary dots of Valor until the battle ends. No cost, roll Charisma+Command.

Mystery: Roll Int+Mystery, ask one question of ST per success that must be answered honestly. Useable only once per story unless failed, in which case can attempt again. If botched, cannot attempt again.

Prophecy: Roll Int+Prophecy, ST must reveal hints of the future. More successes equal more information. Can reroll if failed, cannot retry if successful or botched.

    Knacks
Blurt it Out: Spend 1 Legend, maneuver conversation towards something subject doesn’t want to say, and then they must either succeed on a WP+Integrity+Legend roll at Difficulty of Epic Manipulation +1 (and spend a WPP) or speak it aloud.

Body Armor: Can parry Lethal attacks unarmed. If spends 1 Legend, ichor wells up from Olin’s pores and protects him as armor, from which he gains Bashing and Lethal soak equal to Legend, added to any other armor he may already be wearing, and providing only a -1 Mobility Penalty.

God’s Honest: Olin can perform some gesture of sincerity, and spend 1 Legend. He can then convince someone of a single fact as truth, no matter how untrue. Only solid incontrovertible proof can alter this conviction, and should Olin actually be telling the truth, no mortal force can convince his target otherwise, no matter how well faked the evidence to the contrary.

Language Mastery: Olin, after hearing a few sentences, can speak any language as if he were a native speaker. Reading and writing is significantly more difficult.

Monkey in the Middle: Olin takes no penalties for coordinated attacks nor does he suffer from an onslaught penalty.

Perfect Memory: Olin has an utterly perfect memory at all times. Thus, the ST must remind me of any pertinent information that I have forgotten.

Solipsistic Well-Being: After spending 1 Legend and 1 Willpower, Olin can ignore a single unexpected attack as if it had not occurred. The attack does still occur, including spent rounds, blood spray, or whatnot, but Olin treats the attack as if it has not.

Spatial Attunement: Olin can hear and smell as well as he can see. Also, with a quick glance around him, he can then use those senses to navigate blindly through a darkened room, even a milling crowd, etc. No penalties for fighting blind, and senses work in a 360* arc.

Telescopic Senses: Anything that Olin is capable of perceiving even a slight bit he perceives as if it was right next to him. No penalties for range whatsoever.

I added dots in Epic Intelligence, Epic Stamina, Epic Perception, Integrity, and Awareness. That's all 15 of my extra bonus points!

Well maybe if you come up with a fix for guns(since all other weapons add Epic Strength to damage, and guns add... nothing. Common fix is add Epic Perception/Wits/something like) I would consider a gunslinger character. Maybe... a Scion of Artemis, with Moon and Darkness purviews.

Well, there's a fair point that weapons that rely on mechanisms to be useful (guns and crossbows, for the most part) aren't exactly weapons that can be improved by you. You can fire more accurately, but you can't really improve the damage they deal directly the way being super strong can do for a sword or spear.

Honestly, Epic Dexterity is already an insane bloody statistic all by itself. *L*

Well, Hero Level guns are pretty solid awesome, but once you start hitting Demigod/God levels of Epic Attributes the difference is really stark mechanically.

Obviously I haven't played it out, but I can't see how 16 extra successes on a damage roll compared to no extra successes is going to leave gun wielders happy.

Well, look at it this way.

By that point, you'd either stop using the guns, get better guns (like, with magic or something involved), or get some sort of crazy kickass ammo.

I mean, think about it, at demigod level, you could theroetically convince someone with ARete (Crafts) 6 to make you some super awesome guns or ammo. At which point, then you might could justify adding your Perc or Wits epics to damage.

But really, there's something thematically wrong about striking down a Titanspawn of Demigodly Might with a .38 Special, y'know?

EDIT: DOn't get me wrong, I'm not saying I think your idea is terrible. *L* I just think that guns not being as awesome as the melee weapons in the later parts of the game kind of fits the thematic expression. The idea being that guns and crossbows are weapons that any mere mortal can use to strike down another mere mortal, but to strike down a being of godly might, the old ways are best.

Hmm, you just gave me an idea.

A 1/2 dot Relic ability that lets you use an Epic attribute to add bonus successes to damage, for guns? That way you have a nifty relic weapon, and a gun that's effective against Titans.

I mean, you can't deny that Eric Donner's gun is practically the coolest thing ever, it's just more rational for him to punch things in Demigod and God, which is sort of silly.

I fully agree with the thematics of it, and honestly it's not something I make a huge fuss over, it's jsut that if I play anything that's going to go over the Hero level I don't want to waste five ability dots on Marksmanship and then have to switch to a wussy bow or something.

Well, I guess I know what I should spend my points on. What sort of amazing magic sniper rifle and/or bullets will 15 points buy?

Also, I almost got scheduled to work tomorrow twice while at work today. So I apologize in advance if I get called in and don't have time to come here and warn you. Things went crazy today.

Well, at best you can make a weapon a 5 dot relic, which is 7 bonus points(1 each for the first three dots, 2 for every dot after)

Each dot gives you either access to a purview, a single stat upgrade(if you drop your Speed below three you are a horrible genius person.) or some other power that you can make up if it's cool.

If you want to be sneaky, you can add a relic ammo clip, with say, infinite ammo and damage upgrades, but I'm not sure if the boss would allow that. Still, it would be another 7 bonus points if you 5-dotted it.

I'd suggest (and I'm not Rchanen, so don't think this is permission! *L*) that a 1 dot unique power might let you spend a point of Legend to refill the weapon's ammunition automatically, and a 2 dot power might make it so that the ammunition was simply never empty, without needing to spend Legend.

But that's just a suggestion, based on what other powers let things do.

EDIT: After all, a 1-dot relic (If I recall correctly) gas tank taken from one of the Horsemen allows one of the canon scions to never run out of gas. Extrapolating that, creating ammunition for a gun is an ability more useful than never running out of gas (and it's a combat ability), so for 1 dot power you can spend some resource to get bullets, or for 2 dots they're automatic.

That's just my extrapolation, and Rchanen may have a completely different take on it.

Backgrounds like Resources are in this game? Did I miss them somehow? I don't seem to have any on my sheet. I own weapons and presumably a motorcycle and car. I made this character a while back, though, so maybe I've just forgotten some details.

A faster firing gun sounds good, since it already does a good bit of damage. Could I use points to make it do...um...the supernatural damage? Aggravated? I always assume sniper rifles are silenced, too...if this is one that isn't, I don't mind another dot going to make it supernaturally silent or whatever. I don't think I need infinite ammo, though.

A low-power ability on her knife might help, too, although her Melee is just one dot.

Making a weapon that normally deals Lethal damage do Aggravated is an extremely powerful boost. Unlike old WoD games, there are only a few ways to soak Aggravated damage, and it's essentially the "you're going to die" damage. A gun that deals Aggravated damage would be slightly more balanced, because you're never going to get the automatic 22 successes that Epic Strength 7 will eventually net a melee weapon, but when you're dealing aggravated damage, it's not like that matters much. Someone who can muster up a hefty 20 or 30 levels of Lethal soak will usually not have more than five to ten Aggravated, and that's assuming they've got some serious abilities dedicated to their soaking damage.

On the other hand, having it deal a limited aggravated damage (Say, something like spending a point of Legend per attack, or dealing said Aggravated damage only to a specific type of opponent so that it doesn't do it to everybody) might be somewhat more balanced.

Again, our glorious ST may well have a completely different take on the matter. But Aggravated damage isn't something to be taken lightly in Scion. Where a lot of simple things in old WoD games used to do Aggravated damage (fire, for example, or acid...), now the only things capable of whipping out Aggravated damage are attacks that are fundamentally inimical to whatever it is you're trying to hit.

Blargh. I got called in to work because of the snow and am now stuck here until 8, without an IRC connection. I'll be on at 8 when I get out, unless I can figure a way to get IRC through.

Also, my character sheet is on my laptop back home, so I can't post that. Blech, stupid snow.

I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.

    *shudderS*

An attack speed of 1 means that with that knife you attack on every tick as long as you don't do anything else but hit people.

Toss in a flurry every action, and that means that in the time it takes me to strike ONCE with my spear, you could hit someone a total of 10 times (getting two auto-successes to each hit and still rolling 3 and then 2 dice for each hit), or hit 10 different people.

Essentially, that means that if we come up against a horde of easily-struck and easily-killed foes, you whip out your knife and everything that doesn't have a decent DV dies. *L*

EDIT: Well, anything for which 4L damage plus attack sucesses is actually a threat, anyway.

And no, there's no rule against you being that fast. THere is, however, a rule against you being any faster, as Speed 1 is the absolute minimum.

Well, do remember that a rank 5 Birthright Relic gun would have to be handed to you straight from Hephaestus or something.

I might suggest not taking something quite so powerful at game start for a gun, but that's primarily because, as Rainfall pointed out, guns are going to be pretty much useless later on, and firing off your entire stock of bullets won't do any good if none of your shots actually deal damage.

Well as I was thinking about it, she's more of a home-level character. There' a lot of stuff in the Loa section about how they're happy if one household, one town is running smoothly. So she's more concerned with taking care of lots and lots of minor threats, instead of one powerful threat. If that makes sense.
