What Guitars Can I Use?
Rock Band owners are free to use the Guitar Hero II X-plorer, the Guitar Hero III Gibson Les Paul, or the Rock Band Fender Stratocaster.
The Game
(Excerpts From Wikipedia)
Rock Band is an upcoming music video game under development by Harmonix Music Systems, published by MTV Games, and to be distributed by Electronic Arts Partners. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are scheduled for a North American release on November 20, 2007 at a price point of $169.99, while the PlayStation 2 version will be released in North America on December 10, 2007 at a price point of $159.99. The game will be released in Europe in early 2008.
Rock Band will allow players to perform in virtual "bands" by providing up to four players with the ability to play three different instrument-based peripherals (a guitar peripheral for guitar and bass guitar sequences, a drum peripheral, and a microphone). These instruments will be used to simulate the playing of rock music by hitting scrolling notes on-screen. Players can interact through both online and offline multiplayer capabilities. The game is Harmonix's first project since development duties of the Guitar Hero series were transferred over to Neversoft.
(In Casual Speak)
The culmination of what Guitar Hero I and II had hinted at. How psyched am I for this? Super-psyched. There's a very good chance (we're talking 75% here) that this could be become my favorite series of all time.
The user interface. Left is guitar, middle is drums, right is bass, vocals run along the top. It was confirmed that the positions of these can be switched.
The Instruments
This sexy replica of the Fender Stratocaster is (from a style perspective) a vast improvement over the GHII model, looking much more like an actual instrument rather than a toy. Each fret button is still color-coded, however it's much more incognito this time, as the colors are only visible on a side-view, perfectly placed for the player. Other features include a five-way switch for different sound effects, and an extra set of the five existing fret buttons for all your soloing needs.
Downstrum not working on your Strat anymore? Not afraid to fix it yourself? THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=40188
THE GUITAR THAT COMES WITH THE 360 BUNDLE IS WIRED. THE GUITAR THAT COMES WITH THE PS3 BUNDLE IS WIRELESS. If you happen to own both systems and really want a wireless guitar (and GH3's controller end up not working on Rock Band), this is going to be a large part of your decision. To accommodate all the instruments, the 360 bundle will come with a USB hub.
Four pads (snare drum, tom-tom, hi-hat, and symbals), one kick pedal. Real drum sticks. I imagine you know what those look like, and they're easily replaceable if lost. According to reports, it's easy to assemble in less than five minutes, and you can even set it up on a flat tabletop if you don't like the stand. Easily the newest part of the game I'm looking forward to the most.
It's a microphone. One tends to sing into these devices. It picks up individual vowels and consonants, and if your bastard friend happens to be playing the solo on "Highway Star" or you really want to imitate Will Ferrell, it can be used as a tambourine or cowbell by simply tapping on it. Don't want to tap? Hand full of axe? Just make random noises, like "pow pow pow." All the real rockers do this when people aren't looking.

Absolutely. As cool as me.
I mean, I bought the thing pretty much for ROCK BAND
This gives a good idea of how good the character design and animation is compared to GH3 during gameplay.
Blackened + Expert Drums + Head-to-Head = FUCK YES
I'm assuming you're a real drummer?
I was having trouble with Medium on the demo.
It is going to be insane looking at the chart and then flailing about like a complete idiot.
Hrmm, one of my cousins has been playing the drums for awhile is actually pretty good... I should set he on drums on Rock Band and see how she does.
Man, there will be SUCH nerdrage if amazon doesn't ship my copy on time.
I am a freaking nerd.
I didn't. It's all good though, I'll still snag a copy.
...
Anybody?
...Rock Band's gonna be the balls!

There was talk of it coming out early next year.
Not to mention the bass pedal.
I met a drummer in Best Buy today, and we went back and forth trying to get better scores on expert on the demo songs, he was better, but admitted that the pedal was going to really trip him up.
He's a snare drummer for a marching band, and a GH2 wizard, so it came pretty naturally, but I can see that part really tripping people up for a while.
I was so proud when I finally cleared Dani California and some of the other ones up there.
And yeah, I'm a loser so I started working on a ROCK BAND paint for my car in Forza 2.
You can use the RB strat to play GH2 on the 360 right?
I was lucky though, I manage to snag the last pre-order at my gamestop. Apparently nine were shipped there.
Yes, if you're not a drummer, it will. Try tapping your foot while playing the drum pads. You'll likely find that your foot won't match up with the bass drum, but instead will tap in time with what your hands are doing.
I'd like to become a semi-competent drummer (my prior musical experience being in guitar and tuba with a little piano on the side), so I've learned this over the past few months.
Anybody got a hands-on opinion of the guitar? Not just that it "looks sexy", which it does (I have two real strats, so I'm extra-biased), but how well it is (or isn't) made. The demo unit in the local Best Buy is already unusable. It twists along the seams in the neck, the buttons pop and click, and the strum mechanism gave out so that you always have to strum upwards. The GH3 demo right beside it still played beautifully, better than my GH2 controller ever did, but I have no idea how long each unit had been in use.
I've been personally somewhat shocked how long the Guitar Hero series has gotten away with looking so ugly.
Honestly, their character models are very unappealing.
Start tapping a paradiddle (RLRRLRLLRLRRLRLL etc) with your hands on your thighs.
Now start tapping your right foot along with your right hand.
Easy, right?
Now start tapping your left foot on quarter notes.
Yeah, you're going to be practicing the drums a lot.
As someone who's played drums for a while, I can tell you that this is quite true. I've seen a lot of people try to play drums for the first time- they're usually quite alright with the snare and hi-hats, but once they try to throw in the bass drum, things start to get, well, messy. It usually takes a little bit of practice to get the hang of it. That being said, anyone who's worried about the bass pedal should be glad that there's only 1 pedal, so you don't have to mess around with the hi-hat, or dare I mention it, the double pedal.
I definitely want to give this a shot though. Too bad I don't have a console to play it on (yet).
Edit: just noticed the tuba link.
Some SA goon got the game early and is doing streaming video of him playing it.

He's not playing it with the Strat.
Fail.
Eh, I found it on Score Hero.
For the next Rock Band, Harmonix and EA should go all out and offer either the Neil Peart or Mike Portnoy drumkit. It'd be fun to see the shear size of box needed for a 40+ piece imitation drum set, complete with gong, chimes, temple blocks, cowbell, three bass pedals/drums and triangle.
