This Just In: Stage Builder, where you get to design your own freaking levels, is offical tied in the polls with spectator, a mode that is basically "watch your friends play smashbrothers" for people that have no friends. +stickers.
More at 11!
sorry, this week has just pissed me off, and the cherry on the crappyupdate sunday is watching people play instead of playing myself.
I hope next week:
They put up a demo of brawl on the site that you can only download onto your wii. Then make that linked site unreachable from the wii due to some browser limitation.
And if you download it on your computer, all your get is the girl spinning the leek. Forever installed to your background desktop.
I don't think you realize how much Sukarai doesn't have to show us anything at all. Getting this kind of coverage on a Nintendo game this long before it comes out is pretty amazing. You don't want them to go back to how they usually were.
I just hope you can taunt people from the spectator booth. I'll set up different taunts like "Player1: Might as well throw poo at them!" "Player2: Too bad they don't have auto-PLAY for you" etc.
I mean getting stickers AND pissing off people that are competing, now that's just golden.
As it stands what we have announced is a fun little feature.
However what it implies to me is that if an entire match can be captured and sent to Nintendo HQ for later broadcast (I can't see this being live streaming as some people seem to think) then surely there must be also be the capacity to record your own matches and store them locally, share via friend codes, maybe even save to SD and put up for download?
Optimistic much? Maybe, and don't call me Shirley.
Anyone else find it totally sweet and awesome when Super Sonic went through the explosive crate it created a badass explosion? The whole explosion and bloom effect was pretty fucking badass.
I like the betting part of the spectator mode. Although I guess this means SSBB will be rated PG here instead of SSBM's G 8+ rating. Because of "Mild Gambling themes" same as New Super Mario bros. did.
Did anyone else think for one horrified moment that the dojo had finally sunk to the level that all the satirical joke updates placed it at (how to walk etc), and that spectator mode was actually a description of how to watch the game?
Even among Smash players, there are some people who just aren’t that good at action games. With that in mind, I’ve been thinking about how I can convey the fun of Smash to newcomers. I’ve been thinking about this type of thing since long before I joined this industry.
So, for this game, I’ve prepared a new kind of mode. It’s called Spectator, and you’ll find it in the With Anyone menu. If I had to describe it in a word, it would be "watching"!
Hm, can't say I care for this mode. Though if you can just leave it running and automatically rack up stickers or something I guess it'll be OK.
Isn't that exactly the kind of behavior games are supposed to avoid?
I would leave it running. Just so I could be flipping through channels and go "Man, there's nothing on... Wonder what's on Brawl TV?"
"Later on Brawl, Link vs. Sonic in a free for all rumble at the Battlefield. But coming up next, Ike gets revenge on Snake for being choked like a little bitch."
The Wolfman on
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
If Spectator mode works in Friend battles, you'll be able to have a judge to monitor forum tourneys.

The problem is that if people could watch specific battles, they would be able to take advantage of the betting system the Brawl developers for some stupid reason decided to put into this mode. You could just bet ALL your coins on the Fox McCloud player, and have the other players lose the match. Voila, millionaire.

I can just imagine everyone disabling submitting their videos, except for those showy ones who get really arrogant about the whole thing. Those same ones who love their stupid rules.
"Later on Brawl, Fox vs. Fox, in a free for all rumble at Final Destination. No items. And after that, more of the same!"

"But first, next up on Fox, more Fox on Fox, as a part of our Fox on Fox marathon - all Fox, all the time."
And I can see people worried about bandwidth disabling this feature for a smoother ride online. Or people that don't want to embarass themselves on a global stage.

I don't understand why they wouldn't allow an option for you to watch your friends play

They can't think of a good way to limit spectators to not chew through the bandwidth? They're actually just drawing on one match and then broadcasting it out to the entire world who is spectating? Concern that a 'friend of a friend' might be a dickhole and have a swastika stage and they don't want to include a "user experience might change in online play" warning? Sheer bloodyminded ineptitude?
They're all rationales, but they're all things easily fixed or dealt with. I have no clue. Maybe there's a magic hat that passes down commandments and this is one of them.
My question is, they have the allow spectators option, so are these matches Wifi matches or local matches being sent to Nintendo? I'm just curious how it is being handled.
Just as a reminder... Sunday is the day of the Mega Man 20th Anniversary event. If he is to be announced in smash there is a good chance it will be during that.

Question: What does "Operation Service" mean in this context?
I suspect that it is a secret.
Or it might be that old standard EULA stuff they make you accept to do stuff online. It does say "decline", so I think it might be that.
Either that or...if the players act as servers, even for spectators, maybe accepting at that point will allow the spectator to host the game, or something, if he has a better connection overall. I don't know! When you're about to pass out, the odd ideas come a-flowin'. *Snore*
Also, where would one go about finding up-to-the-minute info on this Mega Man event? I must comb it for the potential SSBB appearance. Then again, this board will have it up within seconds...
I think this is a pretty awesome addition, though being able to watch friend matches would be awesome, I can see why they wouldn't allow it.
Even so, it'll be interesting to be able to spy on people's play styles, maybe pick up a few tips or combos for characters that I wouldn't think of myself.

In another attempt to appeal to everyone Nintendo is offering free health care to those requiring surgery. The catch is your surgeon will have been trained by Trauma Center.
Kind of funny how Nintendo features blatant gambling, but at the same time doesn't want to have any sort of name or taunting identification to "protect the kiddies". Hypocritical much? Wink
This update on its own doesn't excite me much, I'm definitely the type of player who likes to play the games I buy. But if this option is carried in to the "With Friends" mode (why shouldn't it be?), it'd be sweet to be able to watch the other matches of tournaments I'll participate in live.
With anonymous players and random matchmaking, I can't see me ever wanting to use this feature. It also annoyed me because I remembered the only gripe I've had with game info so far -- no names or matchmaking for random online games.

Well, I agreed with what was stated earlier, it would allow people to screw with the system and 'fix' the gambling, completely ruining the value of actually earning the coins to unlock trophies (or whatever else they're used for in Brawl, which I'm guessing might be more than Melee).
Personally, I'd love it if they could set it up for the sake of tournaments, but I can understand why they wouldn't. Maybe they could take the gambling out for friend matches? The update is vague, as always, so we may only be learning one aspect of the spectator mode. There's still that mysterious button, among other questions, yet to be answered.
It seems like some people are confused - I think the way this works is that a replay file is created from every random match you play, it's sent to Nintendo, and then Nintendo stores it and sends it back to people who want to spectate. It's not live spectating, not that it makes any difference in a With Anyone game. And it seems like the betting will be totally random since I doubt you'll be watching a single series of games with the same players.
It's still a nifty feature though. Spectating friend games won't be necessary as long as the replays work well enough.
My hope, for the sake of running tournaments, is that you can take a screenshot of the results page. Replays would work too, I guess, but that would be the best option.
I'm still waiting for them to add a screenshot tool to the home menu of the Wii itself, it doesn't seem like it would take that much effort, being as the game is still on in the background, anyway, and it would be an awesome addition.

Everything about the update suggests that it does not. I can imagine a number of rationales for this, but they're honestly all pretty stupid.

Correct that, thank you Faustum. Elendil, you're a cruel, cruel man.
I already pointed out a possible reason ( a dumb one, but still....)

Though we don't use them to shop...
