Could someone clarify the Megaman anniversary thing? I was under the impression his anniversary was DECEMBER 17th, not November. Is there an actual event Capcom is doing in the case I'm wrong?

It seems like some people are confused - I think the way this works is that a replay file is created from every random match you play, it's sent to Nintendo, and then Nintendo stores it and sends it back to people who want to spectate. It's not live spectating, not that it makes any difference in a With Anyone game. And it seems like the betting will be totally random since I doubt you'll be watching a single series of games with the same players.

It's still a nifty feature though. Spectating friend games won't be necessary as long as the replays work well enough.

"The content that is broadcast is the same for everyone spectating (if your connection timing is the same), so it should be fun to have people in different environments watch and cheer the same match."

Sakurai's quote seems to disagree with you.
It'd be neat if you could download matches to watch at anytime though. If you could save your own onto SD cards to share with friends would be even better.

No matter how bland the update may be, I'm still happy that it's under the "Wi-Fi" header in the "Game Modes" section, which means that more wi-fi updates are hopefully on the way!

Anyway, even though a "Multiplayer Spectator" mode sounds really stupid, I still would've liked the option to have multiple players, each with their own number of coins, betting on different characters in a match, instead of you sitting there betting yourself.

I think all that means is that Nintendo will "broadcast" one match at a time, like a Brawl TV station. But they'll probably be matches that have already finished and are queued up. That way it can automatically filter out matches with disconnects, etc. Still, it sounds like we could actually make an event out of spectating, with everybody posting on the forums about who they think's going to win and arguing about which player sucks the most...

Which kinda makes me wish that they had kept names in. Then it could be amusing like horse racing is to some people - you get familiar with certain namesand can support certain individuals instead of just the characters.

Personally, I am really excited about this feature. I love the Smash games but don't have the time to sink into them to get really good. If I can pick up some new tricks by watching experienced players, then I'm all over it. Aside from the gambling aspect, I'm not sure how much mileage a hardcore Smash player will get out of this feature. Sakurai basically acknowledges spectating is for the novice player right off the bat.

Which is what replays are for. I'll watch all kinds of Halo movies if I know something cool is gonna happen. Not so much if it's a totally random match between people I don't know.

The game is going to be rated T with or without gambling. Melee was rated T and the only "gambling" was the trophy game, which wasn't one of the notes in the ESRB rating. Theres no real money changing hands.

Kind of funny how Nintendo features blatant gambling, but at the same time doesn't want to have any sort of name or taunting identification to "protect the kiddies". Hypocritical much? Wink

This update on its own doesn't excite me much, I'm definitely the type of player who likes to play the games I buy. But if this option is carried in to the "With Friends" mode (why shouldn't it be?), it'd be sweet to be able to watch the other matches of tournaments I'll participate in live.

Well, I agreed with what was stated earlier, it would allow people to screw with the system and 'fix' the gambling, completely ruining the value of actually earning the coins to unlock trophies (or whatever else they're used for in Brawl, which I'm guessing might be more than Melee).

Personally, I'd love it if they could set it up for the sake of tournaments, but I can understand why they wouldn't. Maybe they could take the gambling out for friend matches? The update is vague, as always, so we may only be learning one aspect of the spectator mode. There's still that mysterious button, among other questions, yet to be answered.

Are you talking about the mysterious button from the snapshots update? The one that has been revealed to be a Submit button already? Sakurai even updated the old snapshots update to show it.
