Alien Syndrome is a video game by Totally Games. It is an update to the franchise created by the Action Game 'Alien Syndrome' by Sega. It was released for the PlayStation Portable and Wii in 2007.[1] The 2007 iteration takes place a century later from the previous games and introduces role-playing game (RPG) elements to the gameplay.
The title is set in the far future, where interplanetary space travel is possible. Communication is lost with one of the stations on a distant planet, and Aileen Harding is sent to investigate. She quickly discovers that 'Alien Syndrome' is behind the disappearance and decides to fight the enemy.
The story of Alien Syndrome (2007) picks up approximately 20 years after the original Alien Syndrome game.
Alien Syndrome is available on both the Wii and the PSP. I see no valid reason to buy it for the PSP, as at least 75% of the fun is playing 4-player co-op on the Wii.
Differences between PSP and Wii
Perhaps the biggest difference between the PSP and Wii versions of Alien Syndrome are in the controls. On the PSP, your movement and aiming are both handled with the analog stick, and when you start firing a ranged weapon, you'll lock into the direction you're facing. On the Wii, movement is handled by the analog stick on the Nunchuk, though you'll control your aiming reticle with the Wii Remote, and wherever you point is where your character will shoot.

Gameplay is extemely similar to Diablo. It is a grind-fest, kill monsters and grab the loot so you become better at killilng the monsters. Except, instead of 'monsters', you're killing aliens. And in general you're using guns instead of spells.
There are 4 initial classes, the only things these affect are your starting stats, skills, weapons, and armor:
- Demolitions Expert: Starts with a Bomb Launcher Mk I, Ravager Mk I, and 200 explosive ammo. Skilled in explosive, projectile, and melee weapons, as well as armor.
- Firebug: Starts with a Flamethrower Mk I, Ravager Mk I, and 200 flame ammo. Skilled with flame and melee weapons.
- SEAL: Starts with a Laser Rifle Mk I. Skilled with energy weapons, and starts with 1 point in each resistance.
- Tank: Starts with a Ravager Mk I. Skilled in melee weapons, armor, and starts with Rapid Strike 2, which improves melee attack speed. Highest starting strength.
- Sharpshooter Starts with a Gauss Rifle Mk I, Ravager Mk I, and 200 projectile ammo. Skilled in projectile and melee, and starts with high accuracy, crit chance, and movement speed.
Every kill you get nets you experience (XP), as you gain XP you will gain levels. Each time you gain a level your health and energy reserves fill up, and you get 2 stat points and 2 skill points to allocate.
THE STATS:
- Strength: Determines carrying capacity and melee damage.
- Dexterity: Determines melee attack rate and movement speed.
- Accuracy: Improves critical hit chance and multiplier.
- Endurance: Determines health and resistances.
THE SKILLS:
- Armor Aptitude: Unlocks armor.
- Melee Aptitude: Unlocks melee weapons (all polearms), as well as improving base damage dealt with melee weapons.
- Ranged: Energy: Unlocks energy weapons (laser rifle, etc), as well as improving damage dealt with them. Energy weapons do not use ammo, but rather drain your energy reserves.
- Ranged: Explosive: Unlocks explosive weapons (bomb launchers and mine layers), and improves their damage.
- Ranged: Flame: Unlocks flame weapons, improves damage.
- Ranged: Projectile: Unlocks projectile weapons (gauss rifle, shotguns), and improves damage.

- Resist: Radiation: +5% resistance per level.
- Bio Regen: Regenerate +1 health/second per level.
- Enhanced Recharge: Recharge +1 energy/second per level.
- Pack Rat: +25 carrying capacity per level.
- Bio Regen Field: Other players regen +1 health/second per level.
- Recharge Field: Other players recharge +1 energy/second per level.
The SCARAB:
The Sentient Combat and Recycling Assembly Robot is a floating robot that follows you around. It has an onboard laser which it uses to assist you in combat, and it can also recycle any equipment/ammo you don't need to exchange for Resource Points (RP). These RP are used to buy equipment/ammo that it creates. You can also equip it with attachments, which improve one of the following: attack power, attack speed, healing rate, and recharge rate. It is almost always best to go with healing and recharge rate, as these improve your effectiveness.
I have to say, this one feature may be the crowning achievement of the game - you don't have to leave the dungeon to go buy more ammo, ever, because your store follows you at all times. It's awesome.
THE EQUIPMENT:
There are many different varieties of each type of weapon - each rank unlocks a new type, as well as improving base damage. There are also many different types of armor, each with a different damage soak range. In addition to the different varieties, each one has different levels, for instance a Laser Rifle Mk II is better than a Mk I.
On top of all that, you will find weapons and armor with 'special' attributes such as enhanced damage, movement rate, boosted stats, etc. These are very much like magic items in Diablo. Finding them is a wonderful thing.
COMBAT:
You've got two basic methods, ranged and melee. You can equip 3 weapons to quick-slots, 2 ranged and one melee. You link each ranged weapon to either the A or B button, which is then used as its trigger, and melee is chosen using down on the d-pad. For ranged weapons, you simply aim at the screen and fire. For melee, it's a little more complex, as it uses a combination of buttons and motion controls.
- Light attack: hit the A button.
- Heavy attack: wave the wiimote side-to-side.
- 360 attack: draw a circle with the wiimote.
- Lunge attack: thrust the wiimote towards the screen.
- Knockdown attack: Raise the wiimote up, slam it down.
- Finishing move: Hold the wiimote and the nunchuck in a line (as if you are grasping a polearm) and thrust straight down, as if you are impaling something. (This move is only used on certain enemies and nets you more XP)
THE FUN:
Playing solo, this game is pretty monotonous and not all that much fun. The enjoyment kicks into high gear when you add more players. To be really effective, think of yourself as a party, and level your characters that way. At the moment I am playing with two of my buddies; I am playing a SEAL specialized in energy weapons, with a smattering of explosives and melee ability. One guy is a Firebug with a smattering of explosives and melee, and the other is a Sharpshooter with a touch of melee. (Why explosives and melee? Explosives are
outstanding at dealing damage to a shit-ton of enemies at once, and melee is awesome for one person to use at a time to gain extra XP - it also deals a lot of damage)
This game got godawful reviews, because of the following things: the graphics, sound effects, and music all suck. The gameplay is pretty repetitive (but we've all played Diablo, right?) and the enemies are recycled constantly. The levels really aren't all that interesting. What you see above is pretty much all there is to the game, though there are some neato minigames included. One involves repairing damaged locks to open treasure chests, the other involves hacking your DNA to get stat bumps.
So, discuss.

Nintendo Friend Code: SW-0689-9921-0006
That said, my friends and I have played this for hours on end because through all of it's bad parts, the game is fun.
Maybe I'll rebuy it if I everhave anyone to play co-op with.
I'm definately picking this one up after the hoildays.
I should try and find this to play with friends.
Thanks! My first (real) one.
Anyone who both a) has a Wii, and b) has friends, simply deserves to play this game with them. I do not exaggerate when I say I've played this more than Metroid, Zelda, WarioWare, and Super Paper Mario combined.
I have no money right now, so you're really no helping. :P
To be fair though, the worst of games become fun with multiple people.

That's pretty much the defining statement of this game.
