I tried Dreamlords on multiple occasions, in beta, at release, and at this new wave. The whole thing felt very disjointed and clunky. The game itself is alright, but it is fairly standard RTS fare without the base building. Overall, I would not suggest playing it.

People got a bit tired of always playing the good guy.

I'm still waiting for a game where I can play Neutral Good or True Neutral.

There doesn't have to be good and bad, just differences. DAoC didn't really have any evil races, and it was spread out over 3 realms.

small download and pretty are usually mutually exclusive. I don't know many free games that don't require some form of grinding and those ones are usually hard to get into.

I think Lunia strikes a good balance, combat is easy to understand but hard to master, game has celshaded graphics that look okay-ish, grinding doesn't kick in until much later and is never *really* needed.

Of those I have only played Lunia, so I can't really compare. Windslayer looked ridiculous to me, though.

Best thing I'm playing in-browser is Ikariam, Estiah also appears to be appreciated.

Once I have some free time I was going to ask LewieP about this, he seems to have made a pretty good site with quite some traffic.

I want to make a searchable database with an option for people to fill out some parameters and it'll come up with suggestions then. And a way for people to leave their comments and ratings on games. So yeah, kinda like mmorpg.com, but less retarded and only mentioning free stuff.

I've been giving Dofus another look and ran into Dofus Arena. It's an online SRPG version of Dufus combat. You control a team instead of one player, and it's all PVP. I wish there were more MMOSRPGS like this.

It's still in beta so the interface kind of sucks and it's pretty confusing at first. The engine is better than Dofus. Same art style, better effects. Mac/Linux/PC. I've only been fooling around with it for a few hours, so don't consider this a endorsement.

If it's anything decent you should make a thread for it, either here or in GT (depending on quality, only the most awesome stuff survives in GT (like Ikariam))

beta.lyrae: the site is extremely slow for me, but am I correct in that it isn't a MMO but a normal online game? Can you explain the Massive part to me if it's there?

It's hard to say either way about Warrior Epic right now. When I got the invite I didn't realize how very, very early the build was. Only half the characters are available, most of the quests don't work yet, the playerbase is tiny; when I was on last night there were less than 40 people at a time.

As for the game itself . . . again, hard to tell. It's clearly meant to be played in groups, since soloing is nearly impossible without lots and lots of pregrind. The gameplay is really simple, with almost no UI or hotkeys available, and most everything being mouse controlled. You have HP represented by little hearts, like a Zelda game, and there's no way to refill it during a mission besides potions, which must be bought with "real world" money and can only be carried 3 at a time. You can also die 3 times during a mission, the first 2 bringing you back with most of your health. So if you're soloing it can just be impossible for you to kill everything, you just run out of health by the end of the level.

I'd liken it most to Guild Wars: everything is instanced and follow a linear, progressive story (there isn't even a hub city), skills are simple and based on timers (there's no mana) or limited use (say, 3 per mission), but even then half the skills haven't been implemented yet. Loot is just money, which is acquired automatically during a mission and then distributed evenly once the mission is complete. The weapons and equipment follow a linear progression and are bought between missions, new characters must also be purchased, so you'll be playing your default barbarian for a couple of missions before you can afford a different class. It makes sense, since you're really in control of some sort of guild hall that is hired out to do missions for various people. There are options to and decorate various rooms in your Hall, most of which haven't been implemented, or at least don't have any purpose.

The strangest part of the game so far is that when a character dies and fails a mission, they're not brought back to life. They're kept in a sanctuary somewhere in your Hall and can be equipped to act like single use spells. Their spell effects are supposed to change as they level up. You can also pay gold to resurrect them. There's also 3 different versions of each class, each with a slightly different skill tree. You can customize a character's appearance with "real world" money.

Anyways, I think it'd be better to play it with other people, since that's how it's clearly meant to be played. If anyone's interested let me know.

Oh, I forgot the mention one of the strangest thing about the game. It's distributed like a P2P file, so while you're playing you're also downloading, and then uploading. The lag I experienced in game was very noticeable, but I was also consistently uploading at 40+kbps, and downloading at twice that. On top of that, since you download as you go some features take a long time to get. I had to wait nearly an hour just to download the part of the game that let me recruit characters, then another half hour to download all the different characters. Very strange.

I tried Requiem for 2 hours this week...
    I got to lv 10...

Bascially, the game is kinda like WoW...
Quest wise, there is a new type of Quest known as Scroll Quest...
Eg. you ran out of Quest you buy a Scroll Quest from a Scroll NPC and do that Quest...
    Repeatable...

Skill wise, to reallocate your skills you have to PAY US$5 for a Cash Item that lets you reallocate your skills...

And you can't use Region Chat unless you are a paying member...
There are powerleveling bots spaming in General Chat...

Player wise, seems to have a lot of Europeans...

Yeah, that's true. You have an avatar who acts as the teams "coach" that can get equips (only affect appearance), gain levels, and walk around "the island" to challenge and trade. As far as MMOSRPGs I can't think of anything that comes close other than this and PoxNora (which is itself debatable but I think it appears in the first page). It's probably not "massive" enough as it stands for the list, but if equips affected game play, or you could earn more gold to create better teams, I don't see how something like Albatross 18 could be on the list but this couldn't. I still agree though, as of now, not massive.

Edit: By the way. Thanks for your work on this thread. I used it to go through a whole mess of these games about a year ago. For what it's worth, the ones I didn't end up hating were:
Trickster - I didn't expect to like this at first, but ended up really enjoying it. If they had a Mac client I'd still play.
Maple Story - yeah, yeah, it's a grind, but at least there's more to do and plenty of items
Dofus - Now that I went cold turkey from windows (Mac/Linux only) the pickins' are slim, so I've been fooling around with this. I had tried it before and absolutely hated it. I should have given it more of a chance because so far I'm enjoying it this second time. I'm a sucker for turn based combat though.

So, three games, all 2D, and all suffer from the "cookie cutter build" problem. Also, as with most free games, the community can suck, so bring your own friends.

Ah, there's also Albatross 18 which I've probably spent more time on than all of the above combined. I went through a Poxnora phase as well.

Edit 2: I think more free MMOs should have cheap subscription options that let you play on subscriber only servers with an XP bonus. This would help with the community problems, the grind problems, and probably make them way more money. Also, I have no problems with the item shops. I even have 30k in Nexon cash that I picked up at target that I haven't used. If a game is free and I enjoy it, I don't mind dropping a few bucks a month.

Okay, finally got around updating the list.

I've also added the MUDs on JamesDM's advice. Pardon my French in HellMOO's entry, but really.

    Wakfu
    Free to Play
The follow-up of DOFUS: this turn based tactical MMO takes place a millennium after Dofus, allowing them to tell a story with little to no ties to Dofus. Game seems to be roughly the same, but with more polish and a better graphical engine.

    Magic World Online
    Free to Play
It's a new game, but already looks dated: Isometric camera, site looks incredibly cheesy and the art direction seems to love glow sticks and Asian mythology. The game seems to offer everything you expect out of a MMORPG, but adds player housing and marriage. All in all it doesn't stand out in any way.

    Warrior Epic
Currently in closed beta - early build
Page- is checking it out and seems to have found a game that reminded him of Guild Wars: not much in the way of solo content and everything is instanced. Interesting detail is that you are leader of a mercenary guild and that you send out fighters on missions, then you take direct control of that fighter and s/he gains exp. If you level enough you can get some new characters. Downside is that most of the game will require you pull out your credit card. More of Page-'s impressions

    Grand Chase
    Free to Play
Some sort of MMO adaption of Super Smash Bros. You play against up to 5 opponents, you gain experience and levels which allow you to customize your character and gain extra skills/stats/whateveros. In the graphical department it has 3D characters on a 2D background, which looks good enough for the genre, I guess.

    Dofus-Arena
    Free to play
Whereas you only control one character in Dofus, Dofus-Arena gives you control over a group of characters, making it into some sort of FF Tactics MMO.

    Treshold
    Free to play
    Penny Arcade Thread
This is a MUD, a text based game. That means there are no pretty pictures to fawn over. The game enforces role playing, if you're not acting in character you'll get warned. If you don't need graphics and don't mind putting a lot of time into coming up with stories of your own you should really check out the PA thread.

    HellMOO
    Free to play
    Penny Arcade Thread
Promoted as a text based MMO Fallout. This MUD says it gives you absolute freedom, meaning you can rape and abuse women to your liking, fuck dead dogs oh and maybe kill some mutants while you're there anyway. This game can best be described as "way fucking old skool, dude!" Check out the PA thread if you feel like raping some dead babies.

With two spin-offs, including what appears to be a improved sequel, who's supposed to be playing the original Dofus now? Though what's the draw of Wakfu anyway? It even has the exact same silly class names with dumb shout-outs (named after Rolex, Adidas, aspirin, sado-masochism, etc). It got old pretty fast the first time.

A couple things...Being flash based (now java) it's one of the few MMOs you can play on a Mac or Linux box. It's also one of the only MMOs with turn based combat. Wakfu is closed beta now, so people (who enjoy it) have no choice but to continue playing Dofus :) But in the future, yeah, I can't see much of a reason to play Dofus.

As far as class names go, who cares? One of the classes is a drunk panda bear. I'd much prefer something unique with a silly name than something I've seen 100 times before.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying Dofus, Wakfu, or Dofus Arena are *good* games. I'm just not sure they're as bad as everyone thinks (as far as Free MMOs go).

I guess, but to me it doesn't say much for their creativity. "Oooh a time mage, let's call it Rolex spelled backwards!"

To be fair, I have the same complaint about some EverQuest lore where they did pretty much the same thing, but as word scrambles not just backwards (Tunare, Xegony, Rathe, Veeshan, E'ci, Tarew, Povar -- at least they had a theme).
