I decided to download and try the "International" version of Perfect World. Quite a change. Things seem smoother then they were with the MY-EN version. And I didn't realize how much of a difference the improved translation would make for me.
Pondering whether we need an S4 thread. I've been playing it a fair bit the last couple days. It remains fun, but a couple things are starting to bug me. The biggest one is that every action is mutually exclusive. That is, if you're reloading, you can't run or dodge; if you're running, you can't jump without breaking the run; etc etc. Really impedes the flow of the game. The second thing is the inscrutability of some of the mission objectives. I really like mission system, and generally the other engrish in the game is understandable and even cute. But how am I supposed to know what "avoid by fainting practice" means? (It's dodging while stunned by a sword shot, BTW, had to google a bit to find that out.) And my "DM playing game" mission isn't updating when I play, or even win, DM matches.
But regardless, I can't help but tapping my foot as I jump around and shoot fools. The soundtrack is uncannily catchy and perfect for the action. The announcer is also great.
Edit: This post explains the missions. The "DM playing game" explanation isn't 100% right though - from my own experience, the match doesn't need to go to 20 minutes, you'll still get credit when the kill limit is reached before the time limit.

I have died more in this game than any other MMO, at least this quickly. I think I have been killed 5 times already just trying to grind out some jellybeans in the starting area.

Hardcore.
There's a dude in the little hamlet there who will give you some fruit when you level.
Don't worry, he's not a pedo.
Also, pick up everything. If you get some useless gear, disassemble (it's a skill) it for semi-valuable parts.
For whatever stupid reason, I've been looking into doing something...
Glancing over the list...
Audition is just a rhythm game with some grinding, but a decent enough soundtrack. It's not terrible by any means, although the graphics are a little creepy.
Exteel runs decently enough. But getting decent gear is a huge, huge grind. And it isn't helped along by pretty much every game being a team of level thirty players beating up on a bunch of losers. Oh, and weapon balance is terrible (both between types and between different models within a type) .
The official PSO Blue Burst servers went offline a while ago, but the client was always free to download, and there are private servers around...
LaTale kind've caught my eye. Watched a gameplay video and it basically looked like Maple Story if Maple Story wasn't terrible in every possible way. It's still most likely an incredible Korean grindfest, but it at least looks moderately fluid in action.
LaTale
Between open and closed beta
A game like Maple Story but with more fluid combat. Probably still going to be an evergrind.
Wizard 101
free newbie zone
A trading card game for kids in their early teens. You basically play a card game and when you win you get more cards, exp and you can dress your avatar up all fancy like. As the title hints at it puts you in the role of a starting wizard going to school.
Audition
Free to play
This is a rhythm game: some music plays and you have to push the right buttons at the right time. Graphics look horrible and they somehow managed to get grinding into a DDR clone. I am shocked and amazed.
Did I miss anything?

They're going to release Angels Online on the PS3 as a F2P MMO. Colour me cynic.
Gold Slam is available for everyone now, an MMO Tennis game, I should really check it out one day, I guess. :?
Wizard101 needs to be added to the OP.
Game just went live, free to play (up to certain areas - basically newbie zones are free but it gives you a taste of the game)

"By upgrading from free to play to a subscription, you will be able to: 1) Complete Wizard City! 2) Travel to other worlds! 3) Text chat with friends/family! 4) Have more powerful spells, clothing, equipment, and pets! "
So everything else will be behind subscription. This is also the reason it's under "trials" and not on the normal list.
Blah, so they pretty much just left in some token starting areas to act as a trial. Sad face, I'd hoped they would go a non-subscription route. I had fun, but not two thirds WoW/CoX/WAR fun.

To be fair: one year is 60$, so you're paying about 1/3 of what WoW costs you...
Downloaded and installed Florensia and got it all updated.
Is it decent?
If anything.. it is relaxing.
It's like 2 games in one, though: land combat is kinda like all other MMOs with some skills and shit, but sea combat is a lot more tactical. Make sure to pay attention during the tutorial quests, because they explain a lot. I am charmed by it.

A steal for everyone who plays MMOs for a year straight, I'm sure.

A man of ONLY one game I guess.
I can't think of anyone else who would play an MMO for a straight year.

An online TCG is pretty casual, you could play a few games every other day or something and have a blast. It's probably cheaper than buying M:tG cards and getting together every Friday for a few games.
...
Now I'm protecting a game I haven't even played and I hated their website for Comic Sans.

I know, right?
Hell, I played Asheron's Call almost exclusively for nearly four years. One just isn't enough sometimes. :winky:

It's not really like that, though. It's much closer to an ordinary MMO except with cards replacing skills. You still get quests, you still get run around, you have a health bar and a mana bar, fetch quests, kill quests, collection quests, bosses, etc.
Fun, true, but in a "card battles and MMO mechanics for kids!" sense.

Oh! I should add that to the OP, it's not really clear from their site that there is a big MMORPG aspect to it.
Also: Kenz and I started playing Perfect World again, Kenz likes a lot more now, she says its easier to level and the lack of Engrish makes the world a little more consistent.
I just started up a human mage and it all does feel a little smoother. I forgot if it was smart to move from the human capital to the Elven one, though. I thought there were more starter quests there, but I really can't be sure.
And I don't know which server Kenz is on, there's a "PvP" server now and I kinda hope she didn't pick that one. xD
I have been playing on the PvE server. Noticing that my Blademaster moves at 5m/sec and that my Cleric moves at 4.8 m/sec has me wondering. First few zones are super packed for Humans and Elves both, I haven't tried an Untamed yet.
Been thinking about contacting one of those guilds recruiting. People aren't as chatty in world chat yet.
How did they make leveling 'easier' in Perfect World?
I honestly haven't noticed maybe there is more money to buy potions or more potions dropping, but here I am at 17 on a Cleric (MY-EN called them Wing Elf Priest) and I am meditating to get mana back every 3 to 5 mobs. Which is pretty much how it was before.
I leveled to 30 in about 3-4 days as a wizard, and once you hit 30 you can do a daily quest that gives you about 30% of the exp you need to level.
I never found myself using a huge amount of potions, or that much down time. (though more so then a mmo like CoX or LOTRO where your regen out of combat is noticably higher.)
Of course a wizard has spells that enhance his mana and health regen, just focus on the mana regen and you can use a heal skill you get later on yourself, makes a wizard pretty efficient with minimal down time even without pots, or so far anyway. (pots i only use when im in a group who are in a rush.)
But i never played it prior to the international version so i can't compare the two.
I guess i could start up another blademaster/warrior and see if I notice any differences, but I don't want to play another blademaster/warrior. :P
Anyway, between this, Florensia and Zu Online I have enough to do. I just can't get myself to level more in Zu, it's quite a grind. Which is saddening, because it is a really great game with decent combat, beautiful graphics, interesting classes, fun quests, loads of things to do and the documentation on it is good. Just...grindy. I can still recommend everyone to try it out.
So does Perfect Word still have that annoying delay when you use skills? Between when you hit a key and when the skill actually activates in game?
Reading some of these recent posts I get the impression that the English in PW has improved Is this true?
I'm playing a wizard now and I don't really notice it. You do get to queue up skills, so it does feel a bit detached and I must admit I don't quite like that.
All Engrish appears to be gone, all descriptions are understandable now and the skill names make more sense now.
I only notice any "lag" when there are what seems to be several dozens of people on my screen. So in the major cities. Other then that I don't really notice it.
edit:I live on the USA west coast, and I am pretty sure I remember reading that PW Int is based out of California, so that might explain why I don't notice any lag. I do remember the lag being horrible sometimes when I was playing on that Malaysian server.

I tried out Gold Slam last night.
I haven't played a proper tennis game since the Atari 2600, so perhaps I'm out of date.
But I can see where this has potential. The controls default to the keyboard which is somewhat clunky, but when I used my gamepad it appeared to have the controls mapped there by default as well, so it's just a matter of getting the hang of the game.
Control appears somewhat sluggish, but maybe that's just because I'm a newb. I had trouble getting the ball to go where I wanted it to, but when I played my first 1v1 match against a level 5, I got destroyed. He seemed to know what the hell he was doing, so I'm chalking my problems up to inexperience rather than a problem with the game.
The graphics are clean and sharp, and at no time did I really have any trouble understanding what I was supposed to do, in spite of rampant Engrish in the tutorial.
This game looks like a fun diversion from the norm; sports MMO's are always welcome in a field full of fantasy knockoffs. I enjoyed it even though I'm horrible at it, and I guess that's a good thing.
Fortunately you don't have to deal with it when you're actually playing. I mainly noticed it during the tutorial when "Coach Lee" is instructing you (poorly) on how to play.

Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.
I will have to try that one out some time.
I'm still hooked on Florensia, though. It's still in beta and they keep releasing patches. Yet there is already a cash shop up and running.

Gameplay is quest based with a very Harry Potter flavour running throughout. Spells are "cards" you earn/learn.
I subscribed (10 bucks a month) and I enjoy it.
There's supposed to be another planet to go to, but I don't see any mention of it in the map page on the ROSE site.
I have died more in this game than any other MMO, at least this quickly. I think I have been killed 5 times already just trying to grind out some jellybeans in the starting area.

And isn't 5m/sec ridiculously slow IRL? That's like 1.8km/hr or ~1.2mile/hour. Weird.
*only plays 3 months of MMO a year at best.
About Online TCG, I thought they supposely cost the same as their card counterparts.
*points to Magic The Gathering for example.
