Computer Microphone Problems

Ok. I have a free standing mic for my computer that I use for Vent/recording that has stopped working. It worked earlier today, until I left for a couple of hours. I come back to record something else and it doesn't work. No program picks up the mic, but the computer recognizes it when I plug it in and if I speak into it, sound comes out the speakers.

Check the input volume, as opposed to the microphone output level. It sounds to me like your computer is set to play back what comes in on the mic, but the recording level's set to zero.
