Essential PSP Titles?

FatbadFatbad Registered User new member
edited November 2007 in Games and Technology
I've been thinking of picking up a PSP Slim to keep me busy over winter break.

What would you guys say are the essential PSP Titles?

I'm thinking FFT, Jeanne D'arc, MGS PO. I've hear MGS PO+ isn't as good? What about Ratchet and Clank or Daxter?

Thanks for the input.

    The MGS games are good.

Final Fantasy tactics and Disgaea are must play if youre into those kind of games.

Castlevania has 2 games including symphony of the night.

Ive heard good things about warhammer.

If you like music/puzzles, the Lumines and DJ MAX games are essential(the former being more of a puzzler, but very music-based).

Beyond that, i've mostly been playing FFT and Castlevania, though I also picked up Valkyrie Profile, because it was an amazing PSX game that now commands ridiculous prices; it's only $30 on PSP.

Oh yeah I forgot about Lumines. I will probably pick that up as well. I've logged a ridiculous number of hours on Tetris DS; I really love puzzle games.

Does anyone know why some are saying MGS PO+ isn't as desirable as the first PO?

Wipeout Pure is awesome, Loco Roco is also cool although it's pretty short and not very difficult..the charm more than makes up for it. Tekken Dark Resurrection is excellent if you want a really good 3D fighter for the PSP, and Daxter(from what I've played) is quite a fun game.

Also check out Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and the one that came out very recently for some more solid games. I second Lumines for it's very addictive nature.

Size Matters is very good, a whole lot like Going Commando. Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is awesome as well. MGS: PO was fantastic, very good controls + excellent contribution to the story of the franchise.

I'm having fun with FFT so far, and Warhammer 40k Squad Tactics is a must-buy for me.

It's a multiplayer expansion. They removed the main story mode and replaced it with a dungeon crawler-ish mode called Infinity Mission. The rest of the enhancements are Multiplayer only.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is a pseudo-RPG hack n' slasher where your objective is mainly to slay a big beast in 1 of 8 different areas. It's a port of MH2 which never got released outside of Japan, and it has some tweaks and additions not found in its PS2 brother. I highly recommend it (about 170 hours put in and still going), it's an excellent game, and with the help of XLink Kai you can play the local wireless multiplayer, online. Download quests unlock additional content to further your play time as well.

Killzone: Liberation is also excellent fun, though it can be really difficult at times (curse you, Chapter 5 boss!)

They're both excellent. R&C in particular surprised me with how close to the original it was, given that it was developed by a 3rd party; the cutscenes weren't quite as polished as #3's, but other than that, great fun.

Before I start my list, I should point out that Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+ is an expansion which focuses mainly on the online mode, so if you don't have any interest in playing it online, don't bother with it.

Anyway, here is my obligatory list:
    Brave Story
    Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
    Daxter
    Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War
    Jeanne d'Arc
    Killzone: Liberation
    Metal Gear Acid
    Metal Gear Acid 2
    Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
    Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
    Silent Hill Origins
    SOCOM: Tactical Strike
    Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
    Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

All of them are great games which I've enjoyed a lot. Brave Story is really traditional but it's still one of the best RPG's on the PSP and while the MGA games have been criticized, they're still pretty damn fun.

And because I need to remind myself what's coming out next year, I'll make an upcoming list too:
    Echochrome
    Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
    Final Fantasy: Dissidia
God of War: Chains of Olympus
    Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel
    Patapon
    Secret Agent Clank
    Star Ocean: First Departure
    Star Ocean 2: Second Evolution

Hopefully some companies other than Sony and Square Enix will announce some 2008 games soon, because while this year was amazing for the PSP, next year looks pretty flat outside of those two companies.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords ate all of my free time for several weeks. It is very good (though there are slight bugs in the PSP version that don't ultimately affect the experience much).

I got MGS Ac!d 2, and it was interesting, but I wasn't invested enough to really optimize my deck. It was eight bucks used.

I wish I could endorse Dungeons & Dragons Tactics, but the user interface is so arcane and hard to use that it negates the fact that it's an incredibly faithful D&D 3.5 port.

I played the Twisted Metal PSP game, and it felt kinda like Twisted Metal 2, which I thought was the best in the series. Funny how good the PSP is at emulating PSX games.

Right now I'm playing Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, and while I'm not big on the button mashing combo-centric combat, it's got a unique style and a darker feel than a lot of JRPGs. Also flying around the world at super speed is kinda fun.

Of the PSP games I've played, Puzzle Quest was by far the most engrossing. Bejewelled+RPG = Happy Drac.

That's because the thing is made to emulate PSX games. I'm pretty sure you can buy PSX games for it with the PS3 or something.

Man I wanted this game to be good so badly. The UI isn't really that bad, it's similar to FFT and other tactics games. The problem with the game IMO is that they ported almost everything from 3.5 D&D - what they skipped, of course, was fucking multiclassing. I couldn't bring myself to continue playing it.

Yeah, it's even more addictive now that I can play it anywhere. If you own a psp and like SRPGs this game is a must.

I already own it on ps2 but I bought it again so I could play it while travelling, well worth the money.

Monster Hunter Freedom/Freedom 2 need another vote here. The controls suffer a bit on PSP, but the content and variety is improved a hundredfold from Monster Hunter, already a very solid semi-strategic action title.

Though X-Link kai is really needed to play online, it's likely worth it as the game shines even more when you've got a party going. Still, it is an advantage of the Freedom games that you aren't required to play online to access the upper tiers of equipment and missions; you have everything accessible to you.

It also marvelously one of those very few games where every victory and failure is yours and yours alone. No random numbers BS, no cheating by the AI, just you and the beast(s).

If you're into game collections, the PSP rocks. Just off the top of my head, you have:

    The Sega Genesis Collection
    Metal Slug Anthology
    Gradius Collection
    Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles

All of which are great games and the Gradius & Genesis collections you should be able to pick up for $15-$20 (Metal Slug & Castlevania will probably run you more).

Bearing in mind I stopped playing the arcade version when V2 came out, It's almost exactly the same. The intro has Dogfight playing and songs like Speedy Speed Boy, Remember Me, Over The Rainbow and Power of Sound are in the game. Others from earlier versions are missing though (like Space Boy). You upgrade your car by collecting and using cards which you get by selecting one of three after every race regardless of whether you win or lose. Controls are good though the lack of force feedback/rumble can make gutter runs hard. It sounds awesome through a pair of earphones, has ad-hoc multiplayer and the Bunta challenge as well. One of the main screen menus is the Project D menu where you can view, watch and listen to everything you've unlocked. The BGM section tells you which artist/album each song is from.

Playing through 4th Stage on your PSP is fucking awesome <3

    Hope that helps :)
