So browsing machinima.com on a break whilst avoiding the 100+ retarded Halo "series" that have cropped up, I've discovered what is probably the most well done Machinima I have ever seen.
Seriously, it's very well done in terms of quality. Well done scenes and animation (could be better but I'm sure it'll improve), and some decent writing too. They've even got some decent voice talent on board (Cockney Brits and American sounding North Koreans notwithstanding). This is one of the few times I've ever been genuinely entertained by a Machinima. "Combine Nation" (HL2) is another notable one I liked, but I like my goofy humour. It helps for this if you do too.
They've stated they're going to be releasing one every month, although given the fact that the first episode was apparently released back in February and they're still working on the next two, I wouldn't advise marking it on your calendar.
I was half wondering whether something like this warrants its own thread. I found the first 17 minute episode more entertaining than half of Yahtzee's stuff anyway, so I though other people who aren't into Crysis would want to have a look.
Heh, 3 playthrough's in less than a week. I think I played it through twice my first week. Before that I had gone through the demo like 4-5 times. Each time I find myself doing things different too, which is surprising for me. Sure I have typical approaches to things, but often times I'll just completely change my playstyle for the heck of it.
What impresses me the most is that I find it fun playing through different ways, whereas most games that give you multiple ways to do things there's only one "good" way of achieving your results and the rest are either far too boring or far too impractical. There was a set "way" that the devs saw you doing things and that means that mean other methods just become a pain to try.
Also, I just realised that the theme tune to the machinima is by Jonathan Coulton. Double awesome.

I would have to agree.
It all looked very nice, but most of the writing was pretty mediocre at best and horrible at worst and calling the voice acting "decent" is probably giving it way too much credit. The best voice actors sound incredibly out of place in their characters (the American Delta Force guys included) and the worst just sound bored or like they're obviously just reading their lines.

Hey, it takes a lot of effort to get animation like that. They even made an effort with the camerawork. I was especially impressed with the amount of facial animation. It's not perfect but they did a very good job in quite a few of the scenes, especially when you consider that they aren't using mo-cap for that.
Voice acting was hit and miss but in general more professional than your standard fan project. Dialogue itself was decently written too, at least when they weren't focussing on Zhang. I thought the argument on the beach about missing the DZ was good. The first two guys who were talking sounded fairly natural to me (In general they didn't have the "gruff military voices" of guys like Marcus Fenix or anything, but honestly, I feel that helped it sound more right), the other too, yeah, not so much. Especially the aforementioned cockney.
I do not normally play like most of the videos in the let's play. So it's been an interesting experience.
I was going to say. That last playthrough of yours you used cloak like crazy and engaged like half the North Korean Army.
Usually for that segment I just wait for a few seconds under a bush in a ditch somewhere whilst they walk on past. I typically get spotted by guys on the other side when I'm moving through but by then it's too late for them to do much and it's a short run to the caves.

Oh no that last one is how I normally play. Minus the missing all the time.
Basically I fuck with their minds and fade in and out of the landscape, each time taking out one of their friends.
Until the last guy just screams and starts spraying lead into the bushes....
I'm working on the videos for the next one but I'm having sound issues, seems out of synch. I may have to redo the whole level.
Also the videos in total are fucking huge, probably will have to do screenshots of a lot of it.

Hm. I didn't mind the voices in the video and the camerawork/editing was great but I can't say I enjoyed the writing at all. A couple funny lines in the entire thing.

Unfortunately with the nature of the game I wouldn't be able to play a MP game with you guys. There's no medic style ping friendly class for me to play and I'd be incredibly disadvantaged with my ping since I'm in sydney.

On my computer upstairs I will have Crysis sandbox running with 600 or so c4 and my 7.1 surround sound system on max. I am going to hook up my dad's wireless mouse to my computer but leave the mouse on his computer. When he presses the fire button. Oh damn.

I will laugh if your speakers get damaged.
Also that number of items will probably not all be heard as a clear explosion unless you have a very good sound card. I bet it drops most of them and it's just a loud computer sounding bang.

A few years ago, I was staying at a family friend's house and was sleeping on the couch.
He had what was an amazing sound system at the time so while I was asleep, he turned up the volume on his sound system all the way up, muted it, put GoldenEye in his DVD player and then skipped to the part where the Russian officer shoots one of his men early in the movie. Or at least I think that's what happened. It's been many years since I saw the movie.
But I just got this game and cant believe how into it I am. The sandbox approach works very very well. more than farcry I think. The story is definitely better.
Cant wait to finish this and get into warhead!

Still love this game
got through most of the game without firing a shot, all fisticuffs and flying roofing
Everyone's got a different playstyle. Personally I used to hang out in the undergrowth a lot making the odd summary judgement on a person's hygiene (there is only one penalty for peeing in public *Red Dot*), before sneaking in and out of areas largely undetected.
One thing I'll warn you about is that when you hit maybe the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the game, the gameplay style changes pretty dramatically to be more linear and action packed. It's something that took a lot of people by surprise, and some people didn't like the fact that the gameplay shifted away so dramatically. Personally I liked it, I really enjoyed the change of pace. Either way, it's something you might want to be aware of.
Warhead is awesome, they really nailed the gameplay theories they were developing in Crysis with it. The space are a little less open and free-roaming, but there's a lot more scope for inventive combat hijinks. The game focusses on Psycho, and to go along with the character the gameplay is a lot more action packed and Hollywood blockbuster. To give you an idea, where Nomad dual wields two pistols, Psycho dual wields SMG's.
I had a surprising amount of fun playing this game, considering how much I loathed Far Cry. The suit makes for good fun, although I wish it didn't run out of energy so quickly on harder difficulties. I also kind of despise the weapon balancing, even though it make sense from a gameplay standpoint. It just doesn't feel right emptying a clip into a guy and have him still standing around afterward.
Finding the right balance to get the game to look both good and run well continues to be chore. Certain effects, such as that of the final few levels, absolutely demolish my computer in DX10 mode, and are of course nonexistent in DX9. I guess that's the price we pay for progress.
I'm tempted to get Warhead, but I've got quite a lot on my plate, and the price is still a bit high given it's an expansion. I'll almost assuredly pick it up when it gets cheaper.

I remember back when I bought a computer nice enough to run this game at reasonable settings about a year and a half ago and not a single other thing has come out since then that I can't run on the highest settings.
Im able to run this on Very High at a pretty decent frame rate. I turned a few things down a bit to give me a boost though.
I just finished the zero g part... fuckin cool. and freaky.

Honestly? I just dumped the icegun and went with the FY-71 and incendiary ammo, just make sure you're set to single shot mode, should be able to take them down. Even the SCAR with regular ammo should be able to deal with them. That and a shotgun saw me through (1-2 close range shots will down them typically). The accumulator does decent damage but it's a pain to aim, especially with it's wind up / down time and cooldown period if you overheat it.
As for the ones in the sky (I think that's what you mean by the big one), I think I just ran. But you can still take them down as well, either with the alien weapon or just pummel away at it with the assault rifle. In general though as long as you're near some cover it's not too difficult to avoid their fire.
Prophet restores his energy when he gets near a fire to heat him up, and there's a few scattered along the route. Just pause by them long enough for him to restore power, then move on to the next one.

What's also awesome is that likely you're not going to need to upgrade your computer at all until the end of this console generation, which is a good way off yet. With devs mainly focussing on the consoles, the PC hardware caught up with them quite soon after this generation started. Really anything higher spec is just going to allow more enemies, detailed textures or smoother framerates. Whilst things like that might improve this generation, you won't be stuck struggling for framerates and decent (well, console equivalent at least) visuals outside of a bad port job.
Warhead was an awesome take on Crysis. It's the first game I've played where I felt like I was in an action movie. It's like you get to play John McClane and the in-game cutscenes are the parts where he is on the wing of a jet.

CryTek has said that PC exclusive development isn't as viable for them as it used to be and that makes me wonder if Warhead is how their future games will go. It's not nearly as open, and it runs far better than the original Crysis on the same hardware and it's faster paced and much more in your face actiony.
It seems like Warhead would have made a far better console game than the original game would have, which they've admitted couldn't be done on modern consoles.
I still love Warhead, I'm not complaining or anything, but it seemed an interesting shift in CryTek's whole design direction. If this is the compromise we need to make to keep CryTek profitable and making games as good as they have in the past, I think I can settle for more games like Warhead quite easily.

Well, Warhead was done by a different studio. I'm sure that accounts for most if not all of the differences.
Unfortunately console games are simply too profitable for Crytek to ignore anymore. Crysis beat sales expectations and they've been licensing the engine, so they certainly could go any just do PC games. But, by making the engine more scalable and releasing their next game on consoles, they will probably double their sales. That kind of money is hard for a company to ignore.

The Cryengine 3 that was on display at GDC is pretty sexy looking. Lots of what made Crysis awesome seems to have made its way into it. I believe they said that CE3 is being developed for consoles in mind which is a good thing in my eyes.
Just beat the VTOL level. So far its the only level that gets a mixed reaction from me. The controls just didnt feel right. Im liking the change of pace the game has made. It went from this wide open recon mission to a focused situation and I dig it. Much more than how they tried to achieve the same thing farcry.
I picked up warhead while i was out today and its sitting on my desk next too me right now just waiting for total fucking mayhem.

I think development for consoles, particularly the 360, is going to make Cryengine 3 less of a leap than Cryengine 2. Crysis could barely run on the G80-based 8800 GTX when it was first released, and that graphics card is already more power than those found in the Playstation 3 (G70) or the Xbox 360 (R600). Bleeding edge PCs are already using graphics cards with GT200 and R700 GPUs.

I think it actually looks a bit worse than CE2. The main feature seems to be that they got it to work on consoles. Hopefully that translates to better optimization on the PC though.

Just beat it! Will install Warhead tomorrow. Looking forward to it!
