Played the demo, realized you need the reflexes of a nine year old on speed to play it, then abandoned the idea of purchasing it. Was Unreal Tournament always this fast? I played the original and 2004, I don't remember them being this crazy.

I did play the 2004,though it was rather fast-paced i am certain UT3 even increase the pace furthermore as compared to its last iteration, and amounts to a very frantic gameplay pace that requires a sub-superhuman reflexes to master it. It certainly isnt a tactical FPS game like ETQW,Crysis or CoD4.
Though I still managed to rack up some kills during multiplayer mode in the demo.:P

You should see the mod my friend plays (I forget what it's called, maybe PIG). It's fucked. Low-grav, extra speed, only 1 gun that always does one hit kills. It's like Meth: The Game.
Back in the day on original UT, he was one of the best players, and he used to be tops on the mod/e he currently plays as well, but he's been out for awhile due to personal circumstances.
He's coming back to Michigan soon, so I'll probably end up getting this just to get constantly and consistently schooled by rival teams.

They weren't. At least not the original. I used to love it, but now it just wants to be Quake.

The demo was buggy as shit. I'm waiting on this one.
Wasn't that demo leaked and not a real, full demo?
It was an official "beta demo." I'm not saying the game will be buggy as hell, I'm just saying I'll wait a week or three to make sure.
edit: even if it is buggy at release, I'm sure it won't be forever: one thing you can say for Epic is that they keep supporting their games for some ridiculously long time: I think there was another UT2004 patch earlier this year.
Hearing all this negativity makes me want Gears for PC instead, but I'd kinda feel like a tool shelling out $50 for something I've already played a ton (at other people's houses).
I think it has slightly more buzz around it than Quake Wars did.
Ok......but after the hype that ensued due to the demo it seems no one's talking about it anymore, much less discussion how the final product would be.
I was implying that there is virtually no buzz about UTIII. It seems like very few people care.
Which is odd.

If it were any other time of the year I would be all excited for UT3 but right now with all the other amazing games coming out I can't really make time for it, especially with CoD4 handling all my online shooter needs

Oic,didnt catch the irony but methinks with the number of great(not just good) FPS coming out recently UT3's been tightly squeezed off by competition and left out of the cold.

I prefer my FPS to have vehicle.
ETQW sort of satisfy my need but i am craving for something more,Crysis is on my list but requirement's rather steep so my hope's on UT3.
The demo is rather buggy and there are a fair amount of issues with the gameplay and certain features that leaves me rather underwhelmed.
Plus a lot of people that loved UT99 (still the best) feel rather burned about UT2003/2004, and a lot of the more hardcore deathmatch/capture the flag gamers that like sci-fi shooters are put off by the emphasis on vehicles.
I went from hoping this would be a great DM game combining the best of UT99 and UT2004 to "couldn't care less" after all the talk regarding warfare and having played the demo.
I'll give it a second look after a working competition mod comes out, but till then whatever.
Was Unreal Tournament always this fast? I played the original and 2004, I don't remember them being this crazy.
It seems faster then it is. The player scale isn't as poor as it was in 2004, weapons kill faster, gravity is increased, ect.
Hmm......seems that many posters here are UT series veterans, would UT3 be able to attract newcomers despite the lack of hype?
I doubt it. Sadly FPS games have been on a realism bend lately. DM centric sci-fi shooters just don't seem to pull the crowds they once did.
UT games always sell well, the question is how long people will keep playing the game. In a franchise like UT this creates a problem since people always expect the game to be like a prior itteration, and when it's not they tend to drift away.

I purchased Quake Wars and nobody even plays that with me, much less Team Fortress 2. I'm sort of hesitant about buying another PC game when I can't get anybody else to join in on it. Playing with random strangers isn't very fun.
That's why I keep going back to Counter-Strike 1.6, at least I know everybody on there.

well fuck if I'm the only one playing it I'll be the only god damn one playing it and I'll enjoy me some hoverboards and code me some rocket boots if I must.
with that said, join me if you will 'cause I'm totally into it.

You can't get people to get of CS1.6 to play TF2? Jesus Christ, that game needs to officially taken out of this world. God damn CS fans...
Play TF2 with the PA crew. We're actually good, and fun to play with.
I've got it preordered. From what I've gathered from various forums, it's enough like 2k4 (vehakals lol) to keep most of those vets around, and enough of a throwback to 99 to bring back some of those folks. I heavily prefer 2k4 over 99, but once I got over the new physics and gritter visual style, UT3 was quite easy to settle into.
Way too many releases now, and I feel UT3 is probably a victim of them.
For online team based multiplayer, TF2 on the PA servers is a very hard act to beat. That alone sucks a huge amount of gaming time out. For singleplayer, well, SP has never really been Unreal's strong point, and Crysis has just come out and is a really good tactical shooter. Then there's Gears PC too...
Unless I hear some really exceptional stuff about UT3's new Onslought mode, I'm not so sure I would bother picking it up now. Which is weird to say, because I've played every other Unreal game so far (Alright, so I didn't get far into Unreal 2, but who did anyway?).
Maybe the 4 player co-op SP campaign could lure me into making a release-week purchase if it's any good. But like I said, I think UT3 is a victim of the tide of awesome games out and coming out right now.
I'm kinda in the same boat. If this were a dry time and I didn't have a backlog of like 4-5 'fing awesome' games, I might pick it up. The demo took it from 'probably buying' to 'probably not'. Hard to put a finger on it, but it was almost like I just didn't feel like buying a game I had years ago all over again, for little more than a graphics engine boost.

I'd switch over to TF2 if I had a good enough computer. Played TFC for a while, but 9/10 servers were filled with bots .
Since germany got this more than a week earlier than anyone else, I'm already playing this. Kinda odd. Everyone playing this right now is german. It's almost like... we are the master race or something.
Anyway, two things:
-Single player: There are (corny) cut scenes and shit, but it's still just a bunch of bot matches. Except when you make it a "public" campaign, in which case other people can join your game whenever you play. Don't really know how that's supposed to work, though. Only tried it once, when I logged into the game of some guy still playing the SP tutorial level and raped his n00b ass. Fun.
-Warfare: It's Onslaught. It's not like Onslaught. It IS Onslaught. There's a few new details here and there, and every map has some sort of gimmick. Like a bridge that has to be lowered or something like this. But in the end it's just Onslaught all over again. No huge maps (actually, there's not a single 32 player map). No resource management. No enormous battles.
No wonder they didn't let us have a look at it in the demo.

Disappointing. Knowing Epic, they'll spice it up a lot with bonus packs, and there'll be plenty of good 3rd party maps, but the real question is whether or not the time gap will kill the playerbase like it did with 2k4. I actually really enjoyed the single player in 2k4, and the bots were decent for their time, so hopefully I'll like this, too.
Real shame about Onslaught, though again this will be rectified with bonus packs/3rd party maps. I'm just happy they left in the ability to make assault maps.

I'm betting in a month or so, there will be huge hype and tv build up for the PS3 version.

Not out until.... What, the thirtieth or something here.
Maybe this will get me over the disappointment that was TF2... Nothing like some high speed action with lots of gore.
(Also, guys, this will totally be worth it in some months with all the great mods being made. Do a moddb search on Talon 1-5 for example.)
