Wiiactions: One Year Later

edited November 2007 in Games and Technology
It's been a year since the Wii was launched, even longer since we first heard its true name, and longer still since we were introduced to its strange new control scheme.

In this past year we've seen a lot of changes in how we viewed the system. Some were suprised by its immense sucess. We seem to have all calmed down a bit about the name (or have we grown complacent?) and almost all of the Wii-puns are out of oursystem, although"Wiimote" seems to have stuck.

So, I'm creating this thread to discuss how our views have changed towards this system, in the past year. What most interests me is changes in people's opinions on the name itself (in light of the huge letdown, for some, in learning that Revolution truely was only a codename) but all impressions are valid.

Well this time last year a ton of my friends thought it was silly for me to camp out for the Wii since no one was going to buy one and there were plenty in the store I went to. Shows them what they know.

They also weren't interested in the system at all, and now 80% of them own one themselves.

I still absolutely adore the system, but I have hardly bought any software for it. Zack and Wiki is the only big surprise I found all year long.

I've just moved so I've not had a chance to play Galaxy yet, mind you.

Camped out for eight hours at launch, still loving mine. I'll be honest, I don't have enough games for it, but that's a monetary issue, not an available-games issue.

I still want one, but its being tempered by the fact that nobody has made my lightsaber game yet. When it comes out, I will probably try to get one. Until then I can't justify the money (I'm poor) since I only really really want 3 games on it.

I kinda feel the same way. I really love the games I have for my Wii, but I only have a couple.

    The VC is ingenious though.

    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ghost Squad

All came out within a month. Too many games if you ask me.

It has the odd awesome game I enjoy (like Mario Galaxy) but most of them just seem to be targeted at other demographics. As to the VC, its nice but the pricings a bit crazy..and I just can't help but wish it was more like XBLA

I was really really wanting to pick one up at the UK launch, but after the mega-hype had died away it was pretty clear it was launching with only two good games, and one of those was coming out on the GC eventually I decided to skip it. A year later and I'm finding it to still be a console with a bunch of updated franchises and little more. I don't think motion controls really have been any sort of step forward accept in the terms of accessibility, and I think a lot of that is due to marketing more than anything else. Maybe WiiFit will convince me, but again that's not something other consoles are prevented from doing, they just don't seem to have the design talent and vision necessary.

Also, it'd be a nice if I could make a Mii with my own hair colour, and hair style.

I think it's an interesting system. I'll get one eventually, but while there is interest in the control scheme and some games I wouldn't mind playing, there's nothing on it just yet that screams "buy the system NOW" to me.

That's just my feel for it. However, if I was still in college I would have been ALL over that system. The interactivity and uniqueness of the control would have gone over perfectly in the dorms I used to be in.

All that aside, other than a few sticking points in functionality choices, I find it to be an excellent system that proves that "latest and greatest" doesn't always mean "most expensive and crammed with technology".

I'm not sure what game will push me over the edge (or perhaps multiple games) but I'm sure it will be long before I get a PS3 (Baring some mega huge phenomenal price drop to sub Wii price or deluge of fuck awesome PS3 only titles).

Okay, WHAT THE FUCK is with this "they're not targeted at me" crap?! I hear it every time one of these threads come up! Just because Wii Sports lacks production values, and the games are easy to START playing, does not mean they're targeting a different demographic!

Or does the fact that every other DS commercial has as many normies in it as Wii commercials mean THAT'S not targeted at you anymore either? Jesus Christ on a flaming pogo stick going downhill at 666 miles per hour, stop with this "It's not targeted at me" schtick, people! Either like the games or don't like the games, but don't write it off as some demographic thing!

Sorry, I got carried away. It just bugs me a little to hear that brought up every time.

When I first heard the name I really did think it was never going to settle in. Now I don't even give it a second thought. Hearing loads of people say it to me and having it repeated across TV certainly helps in that regard. I'd be interested to hear if anyone did actually stick to the outcries of "I'll just call it my nintendo" or "I'll call it revolution". Revolution just sounds wrong for the system now.

I wouldn't blame the people who still haven't bought the system, I knew it was going to be a slow year but I'm just impatient. Saying that, I sit here happy that the 5 games I have are good, solid games.

Like with the DS I think the good Wii titles will begin to fall a lot faster over its second year. It's starting already!

Well honestly people say it because it is the truth. Man I tried to love my DS. I have like 20 games on it and the only one that managed to keep my attention for longer than a few hours was EBA. The thing has been collecting dust for months now. I think the system and games are quality they just don't appeal to me. I look at the Wii and I see the same thing. It all looks awesome, it is just not for me. The only 2 games I really think I would put a decent amount of time into are Geo Wars and SSX. Like it or not Nintendo and the third party developers are targeting a different type of gamer on the Wii.

I'm waiting for a few more quality titles to come out before I purchase one. I really want to play Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy (I played Twilight Princess on my GC), but none of the other games that are out now are system-sellers (for me). That's not really a dig on the system, the first year lineup of any console is usually sparse.

I'm a bit turned off by the casual-game focus. I know there are more hardcore games on the way, but let's face it - every developer has finite time and money. Every dollar spent developing WiiFit or the like is a dollar not spent developing a game I might want.

I waited in line for mine (2 hrs) on launch day, lucky to actually have one as it was one of the last places with them still in stock and have not given out tickets already.
    I have not regretted it.

I wish I had more games for it though, as I have 5 right now, but that's because I can't afford them, not because they aren't out there. If I had unlimited funds, I'd have 20 or so games for it as the list just keeps growing as time goes on.

I've purchased 2 games off the VC so far, Excitebike and Kirby. Excitebike was an impulse buy that I semi-regret, but it's fun to just mess with once in a while. Kirby is awesome and I'm slowly working my way through that game.

Wii Sports still gets the most play time as it has 4 player tennis and I haven't seen another game that would be more fun for parties for people who aren't gamers. Brawl should change that a bit at least, but someone really needs to make a better, more awesome and full-featured version of Wii Sports.

If someone doesn't think the Wii is for them, then i just think that the particular game the enjoy hasn't been released yet. It's only year 1. Year 2 should prove to be interesting as third parties who got caught with their pants down now are announcing and releasing good (hopefully) games for the Wii. If third parties don't, then that's stupidity on their part and not Nintendo's fault.

I do hope to see some games come out that completely neglect the motion controls simply so developers can see that you don't HAVE to put them in just because it's on the Wii. Brawl should help there as well as you can use the GC or Classic controllers.

I'm thrilled to see shooters come back on the Wii. I think it's great that it revitalized that genre. Also Zack and Wiki revitalizing the point adventure games (which kinda got restarted on the PC again first). It's a breath of fresh air in the midst of FPS, sports, and minigame titles.

While i am glad that Nintendo have once again gained success in the console market, and while i am glad that they have managed to attract so many casual "non-gamers" to their console, i cant for the life of me understand why knowledgeable, experienced gamers give this console so much love.

As a PC gamer first and foremost, when i take an objective look at all the 3 new home consoles available, the wii is inferior in almost every department except for price. Inferior Graphics, inferior online integration and inferior released software certainly compared to the 360, and i would argue the PS3 aswell, if you were to take away the nintendo created games. Besides the price, the only other supposed advantage for the wii is supposed to be its innovative and unique control scheme, which so far in most games has ranged from being a hinderance to simply feeling natural and comfortable. I am still waiting for a game to come along that uses the wiimote to "revolutionize" gaming, my gamepads felt natural and comfortable a decade ago.

I would argue the console is even lacking in potential, as we know for certain that games will improve in terms of graphics and physics on the 360 and PS3 a few years down the line, it is just natural progression. But that wont happen on the Wii cause the hardware just cant support it, it is not a "Next-Gen" console. Plus, with Nintendo actively marketing the damn thing as the number one choise of casual players, what assurances do gamers have that 2 years later we wont still be seeing puzzle/party/dance based games and old ports flooding the console, especially as multiplatform games just wont be viable on a console that cant match the power of the pc/ps3/360.

The last point is what worries me most, the success of the wii could set a really bad precedent, where console makers will simply decide to cut expenditure in developing their next generation of consoles.

Another concern is that we will soon be flooded with games created specifically for casual gamers, one of the Wii's main targeted demographic, meaning we will see a rise of shallow games like raving rabbits and Wii sport, while quality, complex games will be a thing of the past. Admittedly this is not solely down to nintendo, as for example World of Warcraft has had this effect on an entire genre in its search to appeal to the casual market, but i am concerned that the Wii might have this impact on the whole industry.

Just some of my views on the Wii. Please dont flame me Nintendo lovers!

GUTS, why would you take away the Nintendo games, and then say there's no software for it? That seems absurd to me.
