Lack of communication is a big turn off to a lot of people, but I don't know why. Hell I played Unreal Tournament for years without having to talk, same thing with TFC. Things worked out nicely back then, and they still work today.
People played 2D games with 4-bit or 8-bit color for years, too. Doesn't mean I'm excited to do so on a modern console.
Oh. Wait. Well fuck.
Haha, really? I'd be freaking stoked to play games in 4 bit/8 bit again.
feeling pretty bad about being sucked into a marketing campaign for the first and most definitely last time of my life.

Well yeah, I usually buy technology after reading the pathologist's report on the thing and knowing it's genealogy tree up until the mid 1800's. I bought the wii because it "sounded" like something I can have fun with. I did have fun for about 2 weeks.
If you really haven't thought about it for 5 months, you should look around a little right now and give it another go before you get rid of it. You might be able to get another 2 weeks out of it.
Seriously. I hadn't touched mine in months...now it's raping my wallet again.

Well, yeah, I usually like to know the blood type of the designer too, but to claim that you will "never again fall for marketing" is ludicrous.
The main reason I own the Wii is because it is different.
I am mainly a PC gamer. There is nothing on the PS3 or Xbox360 that says to me, "You can't play this or something like it on the PC. Buy me."
Granted, I've lost interest in the console over the past year because of the quality game drought.
Pretty much the same, except for feeling pretty bad about being sucked into a marketing campaign for the first and most definitely last time of my life.
Give it some time. You don't find ANY games right now that you like on the Wii?
Mario Galaxy, Zach and Wiki?
Give Medal of Honor 2 a rent. Apparently the online component is great.. something I've been waiting for all year: a Wii online FPS.
When I said I haven't played it for 5 months, I was serious. The last game I played was RE4(which I haven't played before) and I guess it was Ok. Nothing since.
So... play it?
Either you were expecting gears of war with waggle or you just are too stubborn to try some of the games available today.
I havn't heard a single bad remark about Galaxy yet. You havn't tried it, yet you say there's NOTHING out there for you to play.
Confirm for me that you just don't want to like the Wii anymore.
If you come back to my initial post, I was trying to say that having a PC gaming machine hooked up to the TV pretty much kills any desire I could eventually have to even try out a game for the wii. Probably, just probably, there will be a title that would make me turn the thing on, but that hasn't happened yet. Also, I have no personal dislike about the wii except for the part where I bought one. I'm absolutely sure there are loads of people having fun with it, but I can't help but feel bitter about not taking a wait & see approach before jumping on the wagon.

Sure, "never" is not a word I like to use. I'll *try HARD* never to fall for one again. It was working fine before that white shiny thing showed up.
I usually just chalk up Wii-haters as people who have no friends.
I can't keep the damn thing off, whenever I have company over, and my Wii has probably sold 5 other Wiis. I should be getting royalties.
I don't really think that they don't have friends, I was just joking.
As far as voice chat goes, my limited experience with it has not left me with favorable impressions. The fact that people are, in general, assholes, has put a damper on most of my online experiences, actually. Including non-voice chat stuff (i.e. disconnects, cheaters, etc). I get that the idea is great, but as with most things, it is ruined by a few jerks.
I wouldn't even post on an internet forum, if it weren't for the fact that the people here are actually pretty cool. This place is a rarity.

I actually agree that the lack of voice in wii online sucks.
Hell I played Unreal Tournament for years without having to talk, same thing with TFC. Things worked out nicely back then, and they still work today.
That's like saying people were fine shitting in holes in the ground hundreds of years ago, so we shouldn't complain when there are no toilets around. Well, I'm exageratting... just a bit.
You certainly must agree that adding voice comm to Wii online would not HURT the experience. You could obviously turn it off if you didn't want to talk/hear people. Add parental controls. Lock voice comm. Easy.
I dunno. I've never really seen the appeal in voice communication in my opinion. For the few times it would be cool, there are definitely about a hundred times that it would suck. Which is why I don't play on Live anymore.. And yes I know I can turn it off, but it's too late honestly. Fuck that shit. But different strokes for different folks and all that.
I'd at the very least like to be able to talk to registered friends while I play with them.
The fact that I sit there playing games with my brother online, stopping to type to him on MSN with my laptop in front of me... says that something is lacking.
I've played the Wii and enjoyed the Wii. Sometimes it doesn't exactly scratch my "hardcore" gamer itch the way something like Gears of War does.
But then this happened: I got a message from my father saying he had bought a Wii and needed my help to set it up. Turns out, he bought a Wii and Mario Galaxy. As long as I've been alive (27 years) he has hated videogames and always gave me hell for playing them. I hung up the phone and said to myself "Self, they've finally done it. Nintendo has converted my father".
In summary, I salute you Nintendo. With Pop on your side, who can stand before you?

Sold my Wii for its 1 year anniversary. Nothing was appealing to me and the novelty of Wii Sports wore off after a couple months. Pretty much ended up only using it when people wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the Wii. 10-15 mins later it would be shut off again. No games this holiday or in the near future appealed to me either, so decision to sell it was an easy one for me.

this is exactly the kind of thing i'm seeing Nintendo pull off. it's damn amazing.

After I brought home my games from the TRU deal, my dad came into my room and said "hey, I saw you got some new games, I thought maybe you could show them to me...or something..."
I figured he meant he wanted to see Guitar Hero. I set it up and showed him how it worked, and he tried it out for a while, laughing the whole time because he was terrible at it. We figured out a few of the reasons why he wasn't doing so well (he was trying to play it like a real guitar) but we had fun and something like that hasn't happened in years.
I guess GH3 isn't Wii-specific but it was neat. He had tried Sports when I first got it, too, another rarity.

I concur. When we have company, this is a common occurence:
"Oh.. you have the Wii? ..... Can we play?"
"Yeah Grandma... after dinner."
I play with my friends over Live
as to no games out, there are probably 2 games that I'd be interested in for Wii if I purchased one. SMG made me seriously consider it, but there just isn't much else I'd like. Just isn't for me. Since last fall when I got my 360, I've bought probably (on average) 1.5 games a month for it. I can't really see myself doing that for Wii.
It is a nice little system, and SMG looks great, but they gotta do better in regards to games.
We seem to have all calmed down a bit about the name (or have we grown complacent?) and almost all of the Wii-puns are out of oursystem, although"Wiimote" seems to have stuck.
Wiimote started life as a pun? I thought it was just kind of an official nickname for the thing.
Live and learn, I guess.
Well, I mean, it is CLEARLY a pun.
But it is a term that I do not believe has EVER been used in Nintendo literature, so I don't think that there is anything official about it.
I remember Perrin Kaplan laughing when she heard that, and she said something like, "Maybe we should just call it that from now on", but Nintendo still calls it the Wii Remote. Missed opportunity or what? Heh.
As for myself, I didn't like the name at first, but I could see what Nintendo was doing, and it was reiterated by Reggie when he said, "At first, every distinctive name sounds unusual. What about the first time you heard Lexus? IKEA? What about Google? Change is good." Anyway, I didn't like it, but I also didn't care about it, because it was a Nintendo console, it was going to have the next Zelda and Mario Kart on it, and that's all that mattered to me.
Within a few days, I'd gotten used to the name and was laughing at everyone who was bitching about it. My God, the bitching! Nintendo was clever enough to realise what the reaction would be, so they announced the name before E3 2006... because if they announced it at E3, everyone would've focussed on the name instead of the machine, Nintendo wouldn't have gotten the great press they did at that show, and it would have damaged the Wii before it was ever released.
Now? My Wii sees occasional use, whenever a good game is out. And of course, when friends are around, it's always in use. I'm currently playing Prince Of Persia (still, I know, I neglected it for a while), RE4, and Metroid Prime 3 - Corruption. On Friday I'm getting Guitar Hero 3 with an extra guitar when it's finally released over here, and jumping on the next train and heading over to a friend's, where we shall verily rock all night, and such. I love my Wii, there are far too many good games out or coming out for it that I can't afford just now (BWII, Mario Galaxy, new Trauma Centre, Zack & Wiki, Forever Blue, NiGHTS....)
I think the Wii has a great future, and I'm glad I managed to pick one up on day one.

One of my friends thanks me constantly for his getting a Wii, since his wife wears the pants in the family. It was becoming a problem with them, too, since he played games all the time, and she wanted to watch TV, or whatever. Now they both play games.
Roomate's parents got one recently, too, due to Wii Sports, and Tiger Woods Golf (roomie's dad is a huge golfer). And we're talking people that would never so much as glance at a game, before.
I find it kind of funny that the 'hardcore' gamers call the Wii a 'kiddie' console, when it's actually done more to make gaming an acceptable adult hobby than any other console. Maybe excessively violent and gory games are the real 'kiddie' games.
I kind of dread seeing threads like this, because I know at least half of the responses are "I haven't played anything on the Wii in 1/3/6 months". Apparently, the Wii is the only system that doesn't get touched at all between big releases. Any other system though, even in their own dry periods, well, they just get played all the time! And I say this as an owner and lover of all the systems.
Anyway, I'm glad I have the Wii. Wouldn't camp out for it again, though. Hell, I'm never camping out for anything, ever again. That was just brutal.
I bought one as a birthday gift for my girlfriend in April. So far I have Zelda TP, WarioWare, Alien Syndrome, RE4, and Metroid.
Metroid blew my mind. It is very close to how an FPS title should really be controlled in my opinion. I'm sad that I haven't spent more time playing it to be honest.
I think the system shows a ton of potential, but there are some definite flaws in the design. It is way too susceptible to setup issues such as TV height and viewing distance, and the wiimote could be a bit more accurate. Ergonomically, the wiimote d-pad is IMO too far forward when held as a remote, it's a bit difficult to hit all the buttons while still aiming (for me at least).
Also, for some reason, boxing has decided that it hates me and does not want to register any hooks. It's embarrassing to get beaten by your GF.

I loved camping out for it. It was about 7 of us, and we were all joking around and having a good time. Sure we froze our asses off, but we have a TON of inside jokes now.
Gaming has always been a acceptable adult hobby... ask popcap... theyre fucking rich. They make fun little puzzle games for the computer and everyone and their mom plays the shit at work. Thats "mainstream gaming" Its simple, non offensive fun. Just like the Wii.
I couldnt pay my grandmother to play Gears of War, Team Fortress 2 or Call of Duty 4... are those kiddie games because my grandma wont play them?
MistaCreepy on
PS3: MistaCreepy::Steam: MistaCreepy::360: Dead and I don't feel like paying to fix it.
I'm still waiting for Wii music, cause it's really the kinda app that sells the Wii for me....
THat and the Bob Ross game, but that's been canned
All the traditional style games are nice and all... They were fun on the wii with waggle controls...
But this trains going to take games into a completely different area of interactivity and design and, well, that's where I'm goin... You guys have fun with your FPS's and Platformers

Yeah, exactly. Why is it that violent and gory games are hardcore or adult? It seems to me that "mature" is an excuse to be as immature as possible. "Wow, that game has primary colours, it's kids stuff only! Games with many shades of brown starring a muscled doofus are the only types of games adults can enjoy".
'tards.

Also a detriment: waggle != conducive to long play sessions.
I think I'd die if I had to whip my arms around to converse, or hack in Mass Effect. Though freaky blue alien sex would be a fantastic mini game.
I don't really view it as a 'kiddie' system. If anything I've found that that, as I get older, 'kiddie' games become more appealing.
I don't understand why I don't really like this thing. I want to. It's just every time I turn it on I just get all 'meh' and end up turning it off shortly afterwards. I'd like to think it will turn out like the DS and most game will be lackluster at first then the offerings will become shit hot. Still waiting though.

This is true. I never got the whole "it's teh kiddy" argument, even with the GC. I mean, say what you want about the changes Link has gone through, but a game with Mario will ALWAYS be cartoony, it's just the nature of the IP.
And having games that are accessible to a wide audience (including kids) is not a bad thing. Just look at Viva Piniata on the 360, it's an excellent game and pretty much anyone that can play it can enjoy it.
If the Wii opens up the gamer "audience" to a wider world view, everyone will benefit, even if they may not enjoy every game that's out there.
I do wish they had made the console a bit more robust hardware wise, but that's just something that will have to be addressed next time... this time around it's a mild annoyance for some people, but I doubt it will hold it back much at all.
My biggest question is... why couldn't the Wii have been the Gamecube? Nothing about the Wii would have been impossible then. It would have certainly made the current Gen a VERY interesting one.

Maybe because you want to like it so much. Just play it to enjoy it, not to like it.
I am still of the opinion that the IR functionality of the Remote is the real Revolution. It has done way more for me to make games better than most examples of motion control. Waggle is awesome, but few companies have really got a handle on implementing it well. After playing Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 3, I really cannot go back to control stick aiming. I tried to play Gun and Killer 7 (former faves) a couple months ago, and I just couldn't stand it anymore.
I don't get how people can get physically tired from waggle for sword attacks, say, like in Zelda. I played that for like, 8 hours straight the day I got it. I think I've given my wrist a tougher work out using my mouse on my PC.

Exactly. Games like Wii Sports...Well, I'll admit, Wii Sports isn't designed to be played for hours on end. You bust it out, you play until you feel like your arms are about to fall off, you stop.
But stuff like SMG, BWii, RE4, Elebits, Trauma Center, RE:UC, MP:C, and so on? This is stuff where you should be fine for quite a while.
Just a reply to some of the questions and responses:
Why discount Nintendo games?
The reason why i excluded Nintendo games is because there is no doubt that they will consistently be of high polish and quality. None whatsoever. While certain characters and nintendo franchises have become slightly stale and repetitive their quality is under no dispute as far as i am concerned. But if the Wii is going to be judged on the Nintendo releases, then what is the difference between it and the gamecube? I thought we were promised more this time around. If its a typical Nintendo console that has great Mario and Zelda games, and average most everything else, whats the big deal? Infact, i may be wrong, but i remember Gamecube having much better third party releases within the first couple of years, in particular some great survival horror games.
Why say there are no games in between the big titles?
I never said the console has no games, nor that they are bad. But if you were to compare the non-nintendo titles (Nintendo Titles invariably ARE the big releases) you will find nothing but mediocre to averagely good games in there, lot of which are ported from either the ps2 or one of the handheld consoles, which for me is inexcusable as far as a "next-gen" console is concerned.
I like the Wii because it offers something different.
Yes, but different does not equate to being good. Shallow does not equate to being fun. A lot of the games being used as an example of good games being available on the Wii would get absolutely butchered to death were they to be released on the PS3, or even the 360. Just of the top of my head i can think of games like Excite Truck, rabbids, etc, that would hardly get a second look on the other consoles, yet are being recommended as "good, fun" games on the Wii. Are games now being given leeway based on how cheap the console to play them on happens to be?
I bought the Wii as my second console.
And that is perfectly fine, but then it should be the other consoles which deserve purchase on their own merits that should be receiving all this love and adulation. The 360 for me is a wonderful console, great multiplayer, graphics, software library, etc. The PS3 while expensive, has terrific potential, beautiful graphics, home online, unique AAA exclusive titles that no one else can lay claim to, etc.
Again, i have no problems with the Wii's success, to be honest it does not affect me at all. But it perplexes me as to why people on a forum such as this keep recommending it, or promoting it ahead of the better competitors. Is price and hype this important even to supposedly knowledgeable gamers?

I got my Wii the Saturday after Black Friday last year. I haven't played it as much as I could have, but I certainly played more of it in its first year than I did my PS2, my GameCube, and pretty much every other system I've gotten while having an earlier system with a much larger library. I've loved the system, especially due the to Virtual Console, and have finally been able to permanently retire my N64 thanks to it. I've mostly sought games I've never owned, though.
Anyway, without the Wii I wouldn't be owning any of the current-gen systems anytime soon. I've been playing games since I was like four or five, but I was seriously considering quitting console gaming and mostly just retiring the DS, with the occassional PC Turn-based game [Civilization, mostly] and casual MMO. So, uh, I love the Wii. Mario Galaxy has cemented its place as my favorite system in recent years [I never really liked last gen's systems] and I'm actually pretty excited about genres I never even cared about until recent. FPS is the best example there. I'm really thinking about getting CoD4, which I never would've considered on a so-called "traditional system".
I'm really looking forward to the Wii's next year and what games it'll bring. If Nintendo had gone the route of the other systems, I probably would be a DS-only person. But they didn't go that route and I love them for it.

I only have 4 games for it, but I loveses my Wii. Sometimes I spend more time dicking around with the software ON the Wii rather than playing the actual game-discs. And I'm not just talking about virtual console (which is sexcellent).
tGUTS: I think it comes down to taste. For me, as a long-time gamer, 'new' is a lot better than 'refined'. I'm not saying that a crappy ps2 port minigame is better than Halo 3 because of motion controls, I'm saying that a good 'new idea' would outrank a great 'refinement', in my mind.
A good 'new idea' can be refined, but a great 'refinement' is still old.
Frankly, I'd just gotten tired of gaming by the end of last gen. Minus a few gems, here and there, people stopped coming up with new ideas. There were still great games, but they were only better versions of games I'd played before.
Even if the Wii fails, it's nice to see developers getting a bit more creative. And not just on the Wii, but for every system. Even if the Wii fails, at least it's forced developers to tread into new territory.
I don't get how people can get physically tired from waggle for sword attacks, say, like in Zelda. I played that for like, 8 hours straight the day I got it. I think I've given my wrist a tougher work out using my mouse on my PC.

I agree that the IR has done more for the controls than the waggle.
I agree. I like replacing some button presses with motion (spin attack in zelda, for example), but I wouldn't dare call it a revolution. The pointer, on the other hand, is the greatest thing ever.
Just a reply in response to some of the questions and responses:
The rebuttal to all your explainations is the same. People who aren't you think differently. It's that simple. Without turning this into a list war I must say that the Wii has so many third party hidden gems, some of which are deep, some of which really utilize the controls and really can't be duplicated on any other system. I'm serious. The controls literally bring the game to a higher level. Heck, Trauma Center and RE 4 Wii are just two examples of otherwise played out games getting a second chance at awesome by having truely magnificant controls!
I also love how you bring up Excitetruck as a game that wouldn't cut it on another system when it is basically a more fun version of Motorstorm, a PS3 "Must Have" game.
I've never bought as many games year one for any system as I have for the Wii. Sure, I have all of the Nintendo big hitters such as Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and Fire Emblem, but I also have games such as Trauma Center, Elebits, DBZ BT 2, RE 4 Wii, Madden '07, Naruto:CONR, and many more. If money and time wasn't an issue I'd have Umbrella Chronicles, Ghost Squad, DBZ BT3 and a good half a dozen other titles.
In conclusion, the Wii has games for everyone, and has some experiences that are just plain hard to get on other consoles.

Well, yeah, I usually like to know the blood type of the designer too, but to claim that you will "never again fall for marketing" is ludicrous.
I can't keep the damn thing off, whenever I have company over, and my Wii has probably sold 5 other Wiis. I should be getting royalties.
I'd at the very least like to be able to talk to registered friends while I play with them.
The fact that I sit there playing games with my brother online, stopping to type to him on MSN with my laptop in front of me... says that something is lacking.
I concur. When we have company, this is a common occurence:
"Oh.. you have the Wii? ..... Can we play?"
"Yeah Grandma... after dinner."
this is exactly the kind of thing i'm seeing Nintendo pull off. it's damn amazing.

Nothing's forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten
Anyway, I'm glad I have the Wii. Wouldn't camp out for it again, though. Hell, I'm never camping out for anything, ever again. That was just brutal.
I couldnt pay my grandmother to play Gears of War, Team Fortress 2 or Call of Duty 4... are those kiddie games because my grandma wont play them?
THat and the Bob Ross game, but that's been canned
All the traditional style games are nice and all... They were fun on the wii with waggle controls...
But this trains going to take games into a completely different area of interactivity and design and, well, that's where I'm goin... You guys have fun with your FPS's and Platformers
I'm tired of that shit
Yeah, exactly. Why is it that violent and gory games are hardcore or adult? It seems to me that "mature" is an excuse to be as immature as possible. "Wow, that game has primary colours, it's kids stuff only! Games with many shades of brown starring a muscled doofus are the only types of games adults can enjoy".
'tards.
Nothing's forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten

I agree that the IR has done more for the controls than the waggle.

Metroid Prime 3, Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
I'd even count RE4: Wii Edition, because I enjoyed playing it with waggle so much.
Smash Bros is around the corner...
This is not even counting games I want to play and haven't, Trauma Center and the new one around the corner.
Yeah, I think Nintendo is in a good spot now.

Thought this sentence would go another way...
The Wii basically had the best first year of releases...ever. I never thought anything would take over from the SNES or heck, even the Dreamcast.
Subject to taste, sure, but I bet when this gen is over and done with the majority will agree.

God damn you Scarab!
The rebuttal to all your explainations is the same. People who aren't you think differently. It's that simple.
