I see a lot of people on my friendslist playing on Casual. I have to ask: why? I have an Assault Rifle that can kill just about anything in one to three bursts, and it's pinpoint accurate (I can take people out from around 100 yards, I'd say). If the equipment gets much better than this, and the enemies are just as easy to kill, I'm definitely going to crank it to Hard.

Ever use a sniper rifle indoors? In tight spaces? That's one reason I play casual.
Of course, I also just enjoy playing through the story... I'm not in it for the challenge, but for the enjoyment. -shurg-
I've been playing Paragon, but once in a while I like to throw in some Renegade lines for fun. Some of the lines are hilarious, like "You assume I give a damn. That's cute."
Tali was also a good character. Both plot wise and gameplay. Shes a good example of Bioware leaving 'hooks' all over the game for a sequel content. We know at some point we are gonna get to visit/see the Flotilla. Plus all kinds of backstory to do with the Geth.
Tali was the one character who I was seriously disinterested in. I liked her enough, but I really felt that too much of her dialogue was spent describing the Quarians in general rather than developing her own character.
I remember in the last thread someone complaining that Wrex would be "My people" this and "My people" that for the whole game, but I think Tali is the one who ended up being guilty of that. It would almost make a hilarious drinking game, taking a shot every time she says "My people" or "Pilgrimage".
I am going to use her as my tech character on my next playthrough; I went infiltrator so I was able to handle decryption and electronics duties. Maybe she will be more interesting, or maybe I just didn't follow through with her conversations.
On the whole though, this the best RPG I've played since KOTOR. I have never been as invested in a game's story as I was the second half of Mass Effect.
I'm on my second play through as an Adept and he's definitely taking a little longer to come into his own. There's little glimmers of awesome in big firefights but he's still not reaching full potential. I've been focusing more on individual powers then just leveling them all as a whole so while he does a few things really well there's also a lot of downtime waiting for stuff to recharge.
Stay the course! They become ungodly later on.
I was considering playing a soldier, and getting experience for that so I could use more weapons, and then switching to adept.
I'm not sure how long that would take me, or even if it's worth it. I do want more Biotic powers, but I want to try new weapons too.
I wish the Renegade/Paragon system was standardized, so similar actions had similar rewards.
I was not happy to see that using non-lethal force when lethal was fully justified earned me two Paragon points, where as accidentally running over a monkey earned me two Renegade points.
There were other situations where I say something nice and get a pile of Paragon points, or do something that saves many lives and gain only a couple. It certainly was better than the Good/Evil sliding scale, but felt too gamey to really do much to guide or support a specific personality I was playing as. I hope this system undergoes some significant revision for Mass Effect 2.
Amazing game. Here's hoping Bioware sticks to their promise of finishing the trilogy on the Xbox 360.
I have to say I Wrex. Kaiden is probably my least favorite character... there really isn't anything wrong with him, but I don't really like him either.
I've completed every side quest I've been able to find except the collection ones (excluding finding the keepers) and about to start Virmire (the last part for me). I still haven't got the completionist achievement yet.

I'm on Feros again for my second playthrough...
When I'm fighing the Thorian itself, I've just noticed that there are a pair of markers on the node tentacles' health bars.
I'm assuming that this is implying that there is some sort of damage threshold for an alternate way of beating it. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I noticed that too, my initial impression was
that you had to damage the tentacles just enough to get the health bar to drop between the two arrows. A few blasts from the shotgun proved my wrong.

Some people never got it, so you shouldn't be worried yet. I think people have been getting it during Virmire.
Is there any reason to keep landing on the uncharted worlds besides the stupid mineral quest and occasional things I can salvage? Because I've only done a couple and it's already tedious as hell.
Is it worth it for my soldier to learn Shotgun or Sniper, or are my points better spent on buffing the other skills and assault rifle?
I agree with the Ashley/Tali party. I like having Tali destroy them with tech, and I'm going to be Adept next time anyway so I'll have plenty of time with biotic spam then.
So far my biggest complaint (besides the obvious ones) is that it doesn't autosave enough on the Mako sections. I'm playing on Veteran (so far with only one stupid exception), and since I don't know what I'm really doing with skill points yet I get raped fairly easily sometimes. Which is ok, but I forget to save because usually it's ok, but then they drop giant robots on my ass (I'm on the section where you get Liara), and I can't save because now I'm in combat. Other than that, the loading zone autosaves seems to work fairly well.

I think it's just a bug as you'll notice the markers are in the same place that they were for the hydraulic door control meter. It just gets carried over for some reason.

You can actually run from that fight, and then save.
Hahaha. I kind of wish there weren't the character achievements, because now I feel obligated to stick with one character group the whole game, which doesn't allow for throwing people together to see the funny things Bioware thought of.

How the fuck do I kill a Thresher maw? I keep shooting the rockets at it, and spamming it with the machine gun, but nothing.
Shoot it with the cannon, it's lifebar will drop, stay out of it's attack range and try to stay on bumpy terrain so it does'nt come up through the ground below you.

That's pretty much what you do, yeah. Is the health going down? If not, it might be bugged or something.

You know, this may not be the best comparison I can make, but I've just realized where I've seen something similar in regards to the whole resentment against aliens. Being the less than stellar Star Trek: Enterprise.
It's barely over a generation after first contact, and pretty much everyone in the crew, including the captain, have a deep-seated resentment against the other races, particularly their allies the Vulcans, because they seem to be purposefully holding humanity back.
I just beat it, the ending was totally great. I am so pumped for ME2.
I hope the sequel just has a tighter, longer, main quest. That was the best part of this game. The sidequests and random world exploring were largely forgettable. Put that dev time towards another main planet or two, and it will be a much better game.

That's so odd...I've been poking away at side quests and exploring planets, still have a ton of side quests to go, and I got that achievement...and I haven't hit Virmire yet.
I wonder what triggers it.

Mass Effect is one big collision of Star Trek and 24.
Has anyone found any mention of some sort of universal translator in the game yet? Or does every species in the entire galaxy magically speak English.
Translator in your ear. It's why Turians have a slightly robotic tone.
I thought that was just the race. I remember hearing about how originally all the aliens had that, but then they dropped it. Asari and the big things don't have it at all (as well as others that I don't remember), which supports that.
You know, if anyone wants to find and do every side-quest, Gamespot has a nice free guide up that has information on every single one. I just copy and pasted it all to a document and printed it off. It has all the Citadel assignments, UNC quests, the random quests, as well as the "collecting" quests with a planet list of what has what. I don't feel bad using it now since this is my second playthrough, and I want to make sure I get everything this time.

I'm avoiding this now, but I am so all over that for 2nd+ playthroughs.

Obsidian won't ever get their hands on Mass Effect, obviously, but you got me curious. Does anyone know exactly what Obsidian is working on right now, if anything? They kind of seemed to have dropped off the map after Knights of the Old Republic 2. I hope they're working on a KotOR3, actually, but I'm sure we would have heard something by now?

Just avoid their sections on talents.
They're kinda stupid.
In fact they're extremely stupid, although I suspect they really rushed it as compared to their other ones. They're good at finding stuff, but damn do they suck at preferential advice. I can't believe I listened to their creation at all when I played KOTOR (although I didn't much since on all my repeated playthroughs I played with the slightly broken Scout+Guardian combo, but I don't remember at all where I read to do that).
Back on topic, to continue asking questions that everyone is politely ignoring, is it a very bad idea that I have maxed out Charm?
Do you guys always base your perspectives on one incident? Mask of the Betrayer redeemed Obsidian in my mind, or not really redeemed as much as given me a faith in them that hasn't been there since the company started after the fall of Black Isle Studios. Anyway, their Aliens RPG will be the deeper darker Mass Effect.
