So does possible party dialogue become squelched depending on who you use as your squad? I've been using Wrex and Garrus mostly, only to find that I don't really have many conversation options with Ashley or Kaiden. Am I just not far enough in the game, or can you only really explore characters you consistently use in your party?

You're just not far enough. It doesn't matter who is in your party, you can explore dialog with everyone. Just keep checking up on them and eventually you'll get something new. Kaiden actually takes a little while before he ever says anything.

So I've done the first mission you're sent on. I'd probably be further, but after attempting to make myself in the character creator, realising that either I'm a hideously deformed mongoloid, or I failed miserably to make my face, I went back to make a face that suited my character. At times I look at it and go "Yeah bitches, badass survivor all uppins", and others I go "Oh, you sun-dodging mutant". It's a thing we have.
On the game though, I notice the texture pop-in and the funny animation skip thing it does in the cutscenes, but I really don't care. After a few minutes, I'm concentrating on what's being said and shown, rather than some technical issues. And goodness me is it ever beautiful.
It's not really a big deal, it's just something you see so obviously in console games. It's more accepted in PC games because there's tons of different hardware configurations but when you develop for a console you know exactly the hardware that your audience will be working with. It's already been commented on that the issue was more or less impossible to fix, so it's a necessary grievance.
If you're going to go into it with that attitude then no, you're not going to like the game. You've barely even played it yet you take the faults that everyone mentioned, exaggerated them, and then let us know what you thought.
Thanks.

So, My Sheperd is basically Tom Hanks' character from Road to Perdition. Silent, no emotions showing unless it's absolutly important plotwise, a good guy who sometimes does bad things. Just for letting me build my character like that, just for that, this game is golden in my book.
I will say, the intro to the game, from creating your dood to that first shot of him, was absolutely awesome. I mean seriously, it's something I'm going to go back and pull out when I'm showing off the game.

How does your character progress in this game? And how does it play?
No one has told me either.
Well define "progress." Level up?
As a shooter I liken it to R6V or Gears. Heavy reliance on cover and squad tactics.
Yeah. Do you wind up getting skills or some junk?
Every level you gain skill points. There are many skills that everyone has, like certain gun specializations and first aid, and class/character specific skills. Each skill usually has a passive bonus, and certain usable skills and unlockables are granted depending on how far in the skill you are (for example, you can learn armor proficiency which increases damage reduction, total shield values, as well as usable skills like Shield Boost and the ability to wear heavier armor.
*sigh* done game in 20 hours as an infiltrator, i think i skipped over a lot of side quests that i thought i would have time to go back and do... but wow, did not see that credits screen coming.
i think ill play through again as an adept and DO FUCKING EVERYTHING i can, because this game deserves that attention.
I really don't see how character creation sucks, it's the best I've ever seen.
If you played Fight Night before you would call this character creation very average. I actually made myself in Fight Night and it looked damn close to me.
I think ME's character creation is good enough though. I did want a Freeway beard, but that wasn't going down.
Oh well, I'm free the entire weekend, my girlfriend will be busy working overtime and my brother had to cancel his visit so I'll be plastered on the couch for the entire weekend. I'm still on the fence regarding what class to go for though. Maybe I'll just play enough until I unlock the Assault rifle skill and start up an Adept with it afterwards.
Silpheed, I think only the Soldier can use an Assault Rifle
I know, I'll play Soldier long enough to unlock the Assault Rifle achievment, which in turn unlocks Assault Rifle for all classes at character creation.
Ok, so I'm getting my shit wrecked on Noveria. I've been thinking of just going off it to level up, but I've gone so far (rift station) but that fantastic boss fight is keeping me away from victory. Should I leave and level up/have fun, or suck it up and keep getting raped until I succeed?
I haven't beaten the game yet but I want to say this about the planned DLC. I know they've had people working on it for months and even if they were to finish say tomorrow. I wouldn't want them to release it next month. I want them to sit on the DLC so it's actually bridging the gap, ya know? Instead of getting ME1 then some DLC, then wait 2-3 years for Mass Effect 2.
I forgot to mention: I got the mining laser code right on the very first try. Talk about luck.
How ridiculous was that? Seriously. Only took me four tries, but still - grrr.
Also: Mass Effect Get! + Baby Get! = Mommy gets to sleep through the night happily while daddy takes care of diapers, feeding and the geth. My wife thinks I'm superhuman. I don't want to let her know the truth.
There is idiocy, and then there is bias for some reason. I believe this is both.
This is not a 7 game.
A 7 game either has GLARING technical issues. (Not niggles), or is poor gameplay.
Mass effect has neither of these.
This game has glaring technical issues. They pretty obviously went well beyond their means on the graphics.
I've played like 6 hours so far and a 7 sounds fair. I have no clue where these 9s are coming from.
This is an 8.5-9 game. To me, at least. The atmosphere is the best ive seen in an RPG in a long time, the combat is fun, the story is great, I really have no complaints. When you compare the amount of stuff you're getting in this next to something like UT3 it's hard to compare. They're both different games, but Mass Effect just has so much more to offer.

I Have Rogue IV (amongst others), but when I travel to Sol, all it lets me do is look at the planets' descriptions; I can't land on anything, or find any way to get to Earth's moon.

Yes, you need to target the moon itself, and not the earth.
As well, some systems have hidden places like freighters or asteroids which only appear as a twinkle on the map, and not as a major object in the solar system with an orbit. You'll need to either keep your eyes open for those, or else seach for them manually (they are usually in the asteroid belts).

Name your child Sheperd.
Actually, naming my female on the next play after her.

1) Has anyone else mentioned the playtime bug? I'm right at the beginning, okay? So I go to C-Sec headquarters and save. My save is 2:11:XX (two hours, eleven minutes, some number of seconds I cannot recall). I then load this save. I then save it a few minutes later. Curiously, the played time is 1:53:XX. Odd, huh? So I reload the 2:11 save and save immediately into a third slot. 1:46. Weird. Then I check and my autosave is at 1:46. So, even though I'm loading a save from 15 minutes later, the play time is being read from the autosave. And yes, I'm 100% sure I'm loading the right saves to check all this. I did it twice to make sure.
2) Does anyone else's game stutter constantly, or is that my Xbox starting to die?

edit: Another question I forgot to ask: what's the difference between hardening (energized weave) and damage protection (Ablative coating?)
I've played like 6 hours so far and a 7 sounds fair. I have no clue where these 9s are coming from.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree then

EDIT: What the hell is a Freeway beard?
Damage protection protects against physical damage like assault rifles, whereas hardening affects tech and biotics. Toxic damage is its own modifier.
I probably should have learned that sooner, would have helped me out some.

Oh renegade, of course.
