1) Has anyone else mentioned the playtime bug? I'm right at the beginning, okay? So I go to C-Sec headquarters and save. My save is 2:11:XX (two hours, eleven minutes, some number of seconds I cannot recall). I then load this save. I then save it a few minutes later. Curiously, the played time is 1:53:XX. Odd, huh? So I reload the 2:11 save and save immediately into a third slot. 1:46. Weird. Then I check and my autosave is at 1:46. So, even though I'm loading a save from 15 minutes later, the play time is being read from the autosave. And yes, I'm 100% sure I'm loading the right saves to check all this. I did it twice to make sure.
2) Does anyone else's game stutter constantly, or is that my Xbox starting to die?
Mine stutters on occasion. When I take it out of standby the next dialog will take up to a minute to load.
So I've been playing for 15 hours and I am on Virmire. I'm at the part where
the team is about to go on the nuke assault. Approximately how far am I in the main story gameplay? 50%? 80%?
There are about six main missions, or planets/areas, and Virmire is the fifth. The next place you go after Virmire is the last section, and you can't go back, so if you want to start doing side quests and content, you'd best do that once you complete the assault.

I forgot to mention that I haven't done Artemis Tau yet, so I'm assuming I'm actually on the 4th world. Is that correct?

Well, there's Eden Prime and then a short stint in the Citadel (not counting side-quests, mind you). Then you have Noveria, the dig site, and Feros. Then you have Virmire. And then there's the final planet and a section after it. I believe that's how it went. All in all, it took me 25 hours, most of that being side-quests.

So who do you guys think is the most awesome character?
I'm not very far in the game, but so far Tali is my favorite. I really hope the next games feature more about the Quarians because they are my favorite part of the Mass Effect Universe so far. The whole "Aw man we created the Geth and got owned by them and now everyone hates us a bit" thing is cool, and just their whole story.
Except for the fact that they vaguely remind me of the Eldar.
But I like the Eldar, so it's cool!
Anyways, yeah, Quarians are awesome and so is Tali because she's the only way I can unlock things.
edit: should I spoiler that? Like... it's in the codex, so I think I'm fine, but whatever.
I praying karma doesnt hit me and Assassin's Creed (a game with mixed reviews and definitely down on my hype list a few weeks ago) that has totally blown me away and is completely awesome isnt going to mean the other big hitter Mass Effect ends up with me not liking it.

The effects this game has had on my positive opinion have been massive.
The Mako controls fine (even great) as long as you don't have to go in reverse when facing sideways. But that is easily fixable by just changing the camera angle.
That's the only real complaint that I can see with validity, the others (turret flexibility, weak shields, etc) aren't a big deal. Before you go off on me, I already know my opinion is that of the minority.

I feel bad for doubting this game for its technical problems, now that I'm deep in the story I've realised this is the kind of game I've been waiting for for a very long time. So god damn epic.
They better bring back Wrex and his 4 testicles in the next chapter, he's the most memorable character in a game since HK-47.

The entire issue could be nullified if they're had the sense to add an option to de-couple the directional controls being slaved to the turret, and allowing the sensitivity to be turned roughly eleventy-gazillion orders of magnitude down.
My ONLY gripe with this game is the minigame. I forgave it when it was just unlocking doors. Then Boxes. Then Lockers. Then Mineral Deposits? C'mon, really?

Can someone answer a class related question for me?
I haven't opened the game yet, but I had this grand idea of being a Vanguard who used sniper rifles and pistols. Is that pretty much out the window thanks to the talent selections?

I bet they've shoehorned it into the sex scene as well. I'm having Fahrenheit flashbacks.

Sortof.
A vanguard can normally only train in pistols and shotguns, which means you are out of luck. However, if you have your heart set on it, you can try rolling another class, and unlocking achievements, and then roll your main character. For example, if you only really want lift for powers, you can unlock the lift achievement, and then future characters can choose to have that talent even if they normally cannot access it. This only applies to characters made after gaining the achievement, and you can only choose one bonus talent, however. This would mean that you could roll a sniper class, unlock sniper rifles, and then select those as a bonus for the vanguard, or else unlock a biotic and add them to a soldier or infiltrator, for example.
This does mean playing the start of the game twice, however, and using that ability heavily until you gain the proper achievement. For some, it is worth it, and for others it is not

Woha woha woha
How exactly are these achievements unlocked? stats, usage, some point in the game? Because the thought of an Assault Rifle toting Vanguard makes my pants tight in strange and unusual ways.

You get the assault rifle achievement for 150 kills w/ an assault rifle. The prestige class or whatever it's called is pretty cool.
I have been playing a soldier, got to choose between shock trooper and some other more stealthy type. I chose shock trooper
Hey how can I tell how far I am into the main storyline? I've done the Citadel, I've found Liara, and I'm now in the Peak 15 facility on Noveria. I have not yet done Feros.
Is that very far into the core plotline? I really want to make this experience last as long as possible, the wait for ME 2 is going to be unbearable. It doesn't -feel- like I'm very far into the game, but I have a bad feeling that I'm like over halfway.

There are quite a few silly problems with the Mako. First off, they have turning mapped both to the right stick a la Halo's warthog, and to the left stick. If you end up doing both, it wigs out. Then, you get into the real problem of turning. If you move the turret, and therefore the camera perpendicular to the Mako, the system has no idea what to do when you press forward. If the back end is facing up according to the camera, then it'll go forward from that, or essentially "drive backwards". But it's that magical middle ground where it doesn't know whether to spin the front side or the back side up when you tilt the left stick forward. Considering the nature of combat, you're going to be spinning the turret around constantly, and you're going to be hitting this problem a lot. Couple this with how squirrelly and sensitive this tank is, and you have a system where simple turning is counter intuitive to what you expect.

I should clarify a little bit... I didn't get to pick the shock trooper when I unlocked the achievement.
I unlocked it during: (small spoiler)
There is a mission to take back a training facility on the moon, when I finished that it let me pick the shock trooper class.
Man, I know it would be physically impossible, but I'd much rather have an actual person controlling my teammates.
Because right now Wrex and Ashley are NOT tearing any kind of ANYTHING up.
It goes back and forth for me. Some missions my teammates are doing great. Other missions like this one I just did on the moon, I end up just reviving them so they can draw fire for a second or two before they die again. Was using Wrex and Garrus(or however it's spelled).

Also, this game is way too big. WAY too big. It's like someone gave you the most delicious pie ever and askes for seconds and you say "Oh no, thank you" but he shoves another one down your throat and lines up two more for you too eat. It hurts so bad but it feels so good.

Please pass whatever you're smoking, because it must be some grade A premium stuff. Mako controls fine.
It's clumsy, weightless, and completely counter-intuitive. Why they couldn't make it handle like a tank in any other console game is beyond me.
I love this game, but the Mako is easily the worst part about it.
