Even if I do wind up helping dumb people in the store, I make it a point to never actually imply that they're dumb (I do laugh at them once they leave however)
Case in point!
"Do you have Okami?"
"Um, we may have a PS2 copy on the wall, but the Wii version hasn't been released yet."
"No, I want the DS version."
"Okami isn't on the DS."
"Yes it is!"
This goes back and forth between the customer, myself, and a few other employees for about ten minutes before they storm out of the store
We used to get a lot of the "I want Mario on PS2/GTA on Gamecube/Halo on PS2" and such all the time. We'd usually recommend something along a similar line, and they'd come thank us the next time they were in.
Though, there never was a similar game to GTA on Gamecube, so we just always pushed Timesplitters 2.

Well, you have both True Crime games that are vaguely GTA-ish.

We had somebody ask if Brawl was coming out on the PS3
Gutting is a despicable practice no matter how much money it saves. If I pay for a new stuff, I fucking want new stuff. It's a deceptive, shitty business practice and ought to be illegal.
I never shop at my local EB anyway. Everyone who works there is an asshole, and I mean everybody. I'd much rather go to the Gamestop 50 feet away where I can talk to the cashier about Final Fantasy III for an hour then walk out without buying anything. All this in clear view of the manager, I might add.
Here's some news for you, EB and GameStop are the same company. Whichever one you go to, the company still gets your money.
Also you're a whiny bitch. Do you people understand how much paper and ink and such it would take to print out display copies for all the new games displayed in every store? A fucking ton. Those take resources, and I'm not just saying money, but trees and shit to make all that, WHEN INSTEAD, they can open a single copy and put it out. If that happens to be the copy you get, then turn it down. But it's not worth going through all the waste to make displays just for a little shit like you

too much stupid
I think he's talking about gutting all games, not just the display case. I agree that it's ok to gut ONE game for a display case, but it should be sold only if no other copies are available, and the customer should be warned it's a gutted game.
You know what'd be even better (but less profitable)? If every store got a fake box for the display case. OOH, paper and ink! Nooooo!

Well the store isn't suppose to gut more than 1 new copy. So if that's what's happening, then yeah someone is stupid and it should be fixed
And sorry I think it's stupid to be wasteful and you don't apparently

Wow someone has sand in their vagina. Have you ever gone into an EB? A quater of their shelf space is usually taken up with games that aren't even out yet and they printed up those boxes. Exactly what do they do with those boxes I wonder?

Actually I think those are dumb too and wish they stopped using them. But they are used as displays sometimes, but they don't have those for every game that comes out.
The problem then is if one is left out when the game is sold out (since normally when a game is sold out the display copy is sold), then a customer will think the game IS in stock and then be all pissy when it actually is sold out. This is a problem with busy stores, and especially holiday times

I have NO IDEA why it bothers you that it happens at all, though. If you don't want gutted, then ask for a sealed copy, and if they don't have it, well, treat that the same as if they were sold out.
When some one makes a big scene about the fact that they don't like gutted games, it really makes me question the maturity and sense of priorities of the person.
I make a point of not going to one of the local EBs here. Me and a friend of mine were in there one time, and he was picking up a copy of TS2. He brings up the display copy for a new one, not caring that they had the actual disc behind the counter. He did care though when the guy popped the disc out of the machine he was fucking using, put it in the case, and charged the new price.
The closest EB to my house is actually pretty good, but recently they hired a bunch of fucking idiots. Basically, if I go down there, I make sure either the manager or a friend of mine who works there is on staff. Otherwise, I don't even bother trying to buy something.
I find myself getting most of my games from either Futureshop or Amazon these days.
Oh yeah, I forgot about how the store is FILLED with fake boxes. They sure as hell shouldn't use one of those as the display!
Seriously, you guys have NO IDEA how business works.
It's fine if you don't like something, and no one is forcing you to shop there, but inorder to stay in business sometimes you HAVE to make decisions that some of your clientelle do not like.
It is fine to dislike the decisions, but calling them idiots for making those choices is pathetic. I'd like to see you all run a multi-national retail chain any better.

Know what's more annoying? Someone trying for 10 fucking minutes to get you to buy a preowned game for $5 less. uh...no thanks.
They do that at my store as well. They're actually trying to do you a favor, becasue they can't give you your full money back if you buy a new copy. Buying a used one means you can get a full refund if you return it within a week.
I see nothing wrong with this.
Actually they're not trying to do you a favour. Their profit margins are far larger on used product and the sales folk have higher quotas on used product than new product.
Considering that I ignored the clerk's advice and wound up hating the game that I bought, brand new, and only got $7 back on my $23 investment, I'd say he was trying to do me a favor. (I'm retardedly stubborn like that)
Buying games used is beneficial to them and the buyer, since it enables you to get your full money back if you return it soon enough, and if you don't they make a small wad of cash at no cost to them. Or, you do return it in time, get your money back and they try their luck with the next customer interested in the game with no cost to you in the long-run. Even if you don't return it in time, you spent less on it than with a new copy so it's not as big a loss.
I bought one opened game new and it was on the day it released. I checked it and no marks or smudges so I figured I was good.
What I don't understand about EBStop is why a game store doesn't order games? If a store isn't going to get more than preordered then why won't I go to Best Buy who got a whole pallet of them?

Yup.
It is a HORRIBLE business model to attempt to sqeeze every last cent out of your clientelle while hurting them. That's why con men disappear, and the like.
Gamestop has set up a bunch of practies that are HIGHLY profitable to them, and also offer some sort of advantage to their customers as well. This is just smart business.
If you don't want used games, or discount cards, or gutted games, you can still get sealed brand new copies of many games there after big box stores have stopped selling them, so even for those who hate their business practises, there is still a benefit.

EBstop is really shortsighted. They are making maximum profits now but undermining consumer confidence. They are slowly driving people away. In the long run their operating practices are going to hurt them.

On gutting: If the game works, then you have gotten what you paid for. The box and manual represent a negligible fraction of the total value of the product, and people who care so much about their condition are just looking for reasons to be upset. If your game's packaging must be pristine then perhaps you should order online.
Warning! Tenuous analogy approaching!
If the car runs, then you have gotten what you paid for. The paint and upholstery represent a negligible fraction of the total value of the product, and most people who care so much about their condition are just looking for reasons to be upset. If your car's condition must be pristine then perhaps you should order directly from the factory.
See the point? If I want something new, see something advertised as new, and pay for something new, it had better be new. If it's not, why shouldn't I be upset?
No. That is completely different. The paint and upholstery represent a significant fraction, as in several thousand dollars, of a car's total value. They are also vital to several aspects of the car's function, namely comfort and not turning into a rusty piece of shit after light rainfall.
A used game and a new game work exactly the same. The end user's experience is exactly the same regardless of what condition the box is in.

They receive titles based on how quickly their pre-orders fill out. If enough people pre-order, they get a bigger shipment. If hardly anyone pre-orders, they're not gonna receive a lot of copies.
This entire issue can be circumvented by pre-ordering the bloody game when they tell you the pre-orders are available. It won't kill you to let them hold onto your $5.

That is an AWFUL analogy, because new cars are sold EXACTLY like gutted games, in fact, they are even more used.
When you buy a new car, some one has DEFINITELY already driven it, possibly even a lot of strangers who didn't even work for the company.
People pay a PREMIUM in order to pick a car up from a factory, directly from the lot. Would you rather that the game industry functioned like that, with ALL new games sold as gutted, unless you took a special trip and paid an EVEN HIGHE price?

I do run a multi-national chain store.
which one?
all of them
yeah, see, my point.
It's okay to refuse to shop at a particular store. there are plenty of things that I have a "personal boycott" on, because I don't like the way that they do business.
But I also don't expect that they should hemorage extra money just to please me, as an individual, and that they are stupid if they don't.

However, given the way they operate now, it does seem likely, to me at least, that they'll eventually become a used game-only store, cutting out the part of the business which doesn't give them the best profit(ie: selling brand new games). Which is fine by me, it's their business to run as they please(so long as they don't break the law, obviously). I just prefer to take my consumer dollar to a store where I am not required to pre-order a new game in order to buy it, is all.
Wal-Mart kind of turned me off on going to generic stores for games. The selection of those places is abominable, and the employees know nothing about them.
Over a year after Dot Hack Quarantine came out, they still were selling Dot Hack Infection for $50, when the store at the other side of the parking lot had it for $20. I attempted to inform them about their error with the price, but they literally shrugged me off. These people don't give a shit, so why should I give a shit about giving them my money when I'm interested in buying a game?

Uh
Either you are grossly misinformed or the EB you visit is staffed by chimpanzees, because the only Coming Soon displays we have are normal boxes with mock-ups of the game's cover
And when those games come out we, shockingly enough, replace the covers with new upcoming games
And "the top-most shelf of each system section" != a quarter of the shelf space

Are you seriously using this as a defense for their gutting retail games and displaying the boxes as such? Something they could remedy by just producing and shipping cardboard cutouts like they did a decade ago? Or putting out copies but fitting the racks with locks? Or putting out tickets? Or any of the tried-and-true methods that so many other successful video game retailers have used for ages without
Do you really think we have no right to criticize them (as "idiots") because they don't want to spend a little money on security measures that everyone else uses and would rather use real, new product as display cases?
Because that would make you an idiot too, right alongside GameEBstop. Really, Evander, you're the one that doesn't comprehend business. Or consumerism, for that matter.
And to everyone: the car analogies are retarded. Cars are, universally, sold in a manner that suggests they may have at least been test driven. They are not factory-sealed like games. They are not sold differently from retailer to retailer. It's a completely different thing. "New car" means something different than "new video game." Everyone accepts that new cars may have been sat in or driven prior to purchase. That falls under the umbrella of "new" in the car consumer kingdom. But games? No, sorry, it's universally agreed that unopened = "new", no matter how desperately EBStop would like to stomp that philosophy out.

That is the part where you all don't seem to understand business. The TINY ammount of increased sales that they would get if they stopped gutting games, from folks like you all, would give them LESS money than it would cost to change their systems.
So you are asking them to make less money for no reason, when their current suystem works just fine.
But it's not worth going through all the waste to make displays just for a little shit like you
Yeah, god forbid they take some of those record profits that they have gotten from selling used games for 3-5$ less than full price and use it to make thier stores a more customer friendly experience. Seriously, how much money out of every used game sold would it take to put up mock boxes instead of gutting new games?
And for those people that say they "should" only be gutting one new game for the shelves, I agree. But no ebgamestops only gut ONE game, they need to fill their shelf space, so there are always multiples gutted so that the shelves look like they are stocked.
as a gamer not a collector i have no problems with EB/gamestop. when they try to get me to pre order something usually the game i do end up pre ordering come with some cool shwag that i wouldnt get at a big store like wal-mart.
gutted games dont bother me at all cause i dont keep cases and i usually trade in the games that i know i will never go back to (super paper mario im looking at you!).
and it doesnt take long to say answer "no" if to any question they ask you...
plus i like the fact that if i have a card with them i get the year of game informer and 10% of used games for only 10 dollars. i spend more on dinner everyday then that...

Thank god that was a slow day
I swear, parents are getting dumber and dumber...

Satans..... hints.....
Oh yeah, I forgot about how the store is FILLED with fake boxes. They sure as hell shouldn't use one of those as the display!

Come on, that would make too much sense!
That explains alot.

What I don't understand about EBStop is why a game store doesn't order games? If a store isn't going to get more than preordered then why won't I go to Best Buy who got a whole pallet of them?
I do run a multi-national chain store.
In the long run their operating practices are going to hurt them.
which one?
A used game and a new game work exactly the same. The end user's experience is exactly the same regardless of what condition the box is in.
they aren't undermining consumer confidence, though.
The majority of the public has no issue with the weay they do business, and many are even pleased by it.
That's kind of the point. They do things that or particular niche may not all like, but we forget that we are not their entire market.
No it isn't. My experience isn't as good if the box is damaged. I'm not just playing these games, I'm collecting them.
It won't kill you to let them hold onto your $5.
all of them
Doesn't the majority of the public shop at Walmart?
whay should I let them when I can walk in any other store that day and get it hassle free?
That is an AWFUL analogy, because new cars are sold EXACTLY like gutted games, in fact, they are even more used.
When you buy a new car, some one has DEFINITELY already driven it, possibly even a lot of strangers who didn't even work for the company.
People pay a PREMIUM in order to pick a car up from a factory, directly from the lot. Would you rather that the game industry functioned like that, with ALL new games sold as gutted, unless you took a special trip and paid an EVEN HIGHE price?
Then why would you go to EB at all?
yeah, see, my point.
Ummm...
