I remember awhile back people posted up concept pictures ... one of my buddies found this article which puts abit more meat into the rumour that they really are going to do this:
After several months of rumors, it has just been confirmed that Sony is currently indeed working on the Playstation Phone project to bring the power of a video game console to a mobile phone device. A high ranking official inside Sony Japan said that Sony wants to grab the two fastest growing electronics markets at once with the Playstation Phone, which are : gaming and mobile telecommunication.
It has also been confirmed that Sony had already submitted an application for a mobile telecommunication device with video games functions to the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office.
When asked about the project, Jim Ryan, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Co Chief Operating Officer said that : ” The Playstation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible. It is hugely intellectually seductive to have a console oriented phone. ”
Diptarup Chakraborti, a Principal Analyst at Gartner Research Firm also said that : ” While the Cybershot and Walkman are better selling brands from the Sony fold, Playstation almost enjoys cult status and two strong brands, Sony Ericsson and Playstation would make a strong success story for Sony.”
The exact launch date for the Playstation Phone is currently still unknown, but I will let you know when there is any new information about the Playstation Phone development.
edit: After doing abit more research it appears Sony is now denying they are working on a Playstation phone .... wierd though ... one division says one thing, another division says another
A Sony representative has told SPOnG that the Sony Computer Entertainment is not working with another division on a PlayStation phone.
"We do have talks with other arms of the Sony family about various topics but I can confirm we are not currently working together on the creation of a PlayStation Phone", SPOnG was told by the representative.
The rumour mill recently got turning again thanks to comments published by India's Economic Times which supposedly came from SCE's co-chief operating officer, Jim Ryan. Sony tells us that Ryan was in fact misquoted by the Economic Times, although his comments were vague to start with.
The hardened cynics out there might see a bit of wiggle room in Sony's statement - it's possible that arms of the Sony family aren't working together on a PlayStation phone but that one of them is working on it individually. SPOnG, frankly, doubts it. It's unlikely that a Sony division would neglect to use another's expertise on such a project.
This does not, of course, mean that a PlayStation phone will not come at some point, we just shouldn't be expecting it in the near future.
While the Cybershot and Walkman are better selling brands from the Sony fold, Playstation almost enjoys cult status and two strong brands, Sony Ericsson and Playstation would make a strong success story for Sony.
Doesn't cult status usually mean that something is not widely popular but has a small dedicated following?

That pretty much sums it up for me.
I think Sony should just focus on support of what they've got out there already.
