The Mist

Synopsis

Following a violent thunderstorm, artist David Drayton and a small town community come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist. Local rumors point to an experiment called “The Arrowhead Project” conducted at a nearby top-secret military base, but questions as to the origins of the deadly vapor are secondary to the group’s overall chances for survival. Retreating to a local
supermarket, Drayton and the survivors must face-off against each other before taking a united stand against an enemy they cannot even see.

My own take:
I saw this movie last night and thought it was pretty good, but with a few flaws. The primary plot doesn't have to do with the mist outside or the monsters, but the effect of fear on people. Some people seemed to miss the point entirely and just gone "LOLFundies" but there is only one fundamentalist Mrs. Carmody. She is the catalyst the shows what happens to people when something completely new and terrifying comes.

And while some people can adapt to new circumstances, most will clutch desperately to any hope that anyone might offer. They want an easy out, and it doesn't matter if there is one or not they will do anything to try to convince themselves that there is, even murder. People lose all sense of rational, and will become selfish.

The monsters are well done though even at the times they are using animatronics it still looks vaguely like cgi, due to the overlay they use to make them look like the same monsters outside the store as inside. And some monsters that you only catch a glimpse of through the mist are very creative.

The acting was pretty good. I've know several people just like Mrs. Carmody and to see that on screen was cool even though you'll want to reach through the screen and punch her. Every one plays there parts well and the character David Drayton does an excellent job of being the slightly more rational normal guy.

and for those that caught it and the alusion that its for an upcoming movie: Gunslinger painting FTW!

This has always been my favourite King short story. I read what the new ending is ahead of time, and it doesn't really bother me to much considering

They essentially drive around in wasteland that has become earth, with very little hope, looking for other survivors in the original
    .

It reminds me of Dawn of the Dead '78's unreleased ending, but the exact opposite.

Also; Do they keep the guys getting shitfaced in the supermarket?

So how long's it gonna take for Stephen King's 'Cell' to become a motion picture? I can't wait to see the CGI levitating not-zombies.

Saw the film opening day and it was pretty fun to watch. It was a nice departure from the usual horror/slasher flicks that we're constantly bombarded with. The effects were ok though I think the film could make a great video game, though the monsters do look borrowed from video games (especially Doom3) already.

The end didn't surprise me too much though it looks very fucking familiar. Hasn't a TV show or another film ended the same way??
It ends where the characters commit suicide to avoid a horrible fate though if they waited a minute instead they could have been rescued.

Yeah. The idea for Half Life grew out of this. I believe they first thought about setting it in a town near Black Mesa, then realized The Mist already told that story, and thought what was happening on the base would be so much more interesting.

    They made the right choice.

I just got back from the movie. Not a bad adaptation of the story. Yeah, the ending is different. Not sure how I feel about it. I did enjoy...

IGN Movies has reported that a film adaptation is in the works; whether it is for a movie or a television series is unknown. J. J. Abrams, who has been behind shows such as Lost and Alias, is supposedly attached to produce and direct. Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, also affiliated with Lost and J. J. Abrams, have optioned the Dark Tower series from King for a reported nineteen dollars, which of course, is the infamous number from the Dark Tower series of novels.

But that's a discussion for another thread. :)

I've seen endings like it before,
but never to that degree. His wife was eaten by spiders. He just shot his son and the woman he has come to love. As well as 2 people who trusted him. That goes beyond grim, to just plain brutal.

I loved the movie. I'm a huge Stephen King fan though. Not sure if I like the new ending better or not, but I definitely enjoyed every minute. And it stayed incredibly true to the source material.

    Also, that little easter egg
Drawing an obvious Dark Tower poster followed by "Oh this is David, he draws movie posters for a living." made me literally jump like a schoolgirl.

Another small easter egg, can't remember if this was in the book or not, was David calling his kid Big Bill. Just like Big Bill from IT.

Love this movie, but good lord Thomas Jane cannot act

Also some good Stand references, too:
The girl that got stung had swelling/blackening of the throat, just like Captain Tripps

One of my friends that came with me to see The Mist said that it reminded him of Half-Life. Later, when I was telling them that the original story didn't really have an ending, he told me to play Half-Life 2 if I wanted to find out.

Reminds me of the end of Cujo *book, movie might have been different*
Mom and her kid spend a terrifying time trapped inside a car that won't start by a rapid dog, only to be rescued to late to save the kid who dies of dehydration. King takes his time to point out that the door to the house they were parked in front of was unlocked the entire time and she could have probably made it inside when the dog wondered off in the distance.

the flying creatures in silent hill were based directly off the ones in the mist. And the reason for the mist and the creatures was the dark dimension. there was a playstation article on it a LONG time ago.

I think there are several major lessons to be learned from this film:
    1. Never let a crazed religious person to control a mob.

    2. Never give up, never surrender.

    3. Never underestimate the power of the US military.

Strange, I never knew that, but after seeing this with my girlfriend, I started telling her it was a lot like Half-Life. Then I began to explain the plot of Half-Life, then I started to look like a total nerd :|

I can see a lot the Silent Hill similarities, especially the flying pterodactyl things.

The book is more about what happens to people in these types of circumstances than the actual monsters, don't know if that's any help.

Ok, just saw it tonight. I actually really enjoyed it, though holy god that was a depressing ending. Tom Jane did a good job. Also, the creatures were good.
The tentacle monster freaked the shit out of me, and the thing that we never really saw that got the soldier was also really disturbing to me for some reason. Lastly, the colossal six-legged thing was just D:

I thought Darabont did a great job with the creatures. Funny enough, they did look just how I imagined them from the story, if only a little "buggier".

If I have one gripe about the movie, it would be the music that played during the end scenes. It really took me out of it. I mean, we get good, atmospheric music the entire movie...only to get the haunting singing? It just felt over the top and too dramatic. It felt like movie music. =/

    Also (end spoilers)
Tom Jane's screaming in the car was great. His tantrum, followed by him jumping out of the car and screaming was wonderful as well. However, once he saw the tanks and everything...I think he should have just gone silent. He should have just stared at the oncoming military and just had tears running down his face. He was just yelling too much at the end.

My wife saw this with her mom. She's generally good with horror flicks, and likes Steven King a lot. I asked her about it later:

    "How was the movie?"

    "Good. Really, really good."

"Great! Would we be buying the DVD when it comes out?"

    "No."

She was honestly disturbed by the film. She thought it was excellent, and definitely got her money's worth, but would not go back to see it again. That's high praise in her world.
