Survival Crisis Z
Fantastic Contraption
Here's why you should play it immediately:

1. It's superb fun
2. It's really elegantly designed: the 4 tools are versatile enough to build a huge variety of crap
3. After you solve a puzzle, you can see other players' solutions, many of which are genius.

give it a try. I haven't enjoyed a Flash game this much since N.

Alternate Path
Shhhh i havn't even tried this game, heard its gooddd

Iji
ijizoom.gif

Iji is a Stealth-rpg-action-platformer sorta. Basically you're a girl caught up in an alien invasion who was conveniently turned into a nano-cyborg superwarrior. The game is split up into levels with varying paths that lets you decide if you want to hack your way through, sneak around the baddies or go in with guns (and feet) blazing.

You collect nano-thingies to upgrade your stats such as health, kick strength (for kicking down aliens and doors) ability to assimilate health packs better, hacking (which is a nifty little minigame) and more.

I'm not to far into it yet, there's plenty of story there, though I'd say the writing is "just okay".

Overall though Iji is pretty damn fun and worth your time. Easily the best indie game I've played in the last few months

I like the scoring system, too. Instead of getting points you get letters that complete a poem.
I think I may be close.

Anyways, it's a nice way to relax.

Voxelstein

http://voxelstein3d.sourceforge.net/
Voxelstein 3D is an FPS game inspired by Wolfenstein 3D. The game uses Ken Silverman's VOXLAP engine to render voxels in software. The levels in the game are fully destructible - and by fully we mean fully.

The game world is built from tiny cubes called voxels. There are over 37 million in the first level. Rendering a world like this is slow (especially without hardware acceleration), but there is an advantage: voxels can be added, removed or otherwise altered very very quickly. This enables all kinds of cool stuff, including fully destructible worlds!

Features
-Weapons: knife, pistol, chaingun, C4
-Enemies: guard, officer
-Many treasures to collect
-Fully destructible world: blow holes in walls, ceilings, enemies, anywhere!
-Loads original sounds and music from Wolfenstein 3D

Download it here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=224163

The level is pretty short, but I have loved voxels since playing Outcast.

Flywrench
Video Of Game In Action
THE FLYWRENCH IS THE ONLY POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO AN EQUATION WITH NO OPERATORS

THE FLYWRENCH IS THE MATHEMATICAL FORM OF PURE TENSION

THE FLYRENCH HAS NO MOTHER OR FATHER

Flywrench is a short action game by Mark Essen which involves using the cursor keys to navigate around mazes. Tap the up arrow key repeatedly to fly upwards, or hold the down arrow key to row. Use the left and right arrow keys to direct your ship's direction.

Certain obstacles can only be passed through by holding down an arrow key. Later levels include moving obstacles or switches, but restarts are quick so very little time is spent on waiting for your ship to respawn.

Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden

Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden

2213600480_974e6e3638.jpg

For those who haven't played it (shame on you,) it's an RPG in which you play as Charles Barkley in post-cyberpocalyptic Neo New York, after Manhattan has been destroyed by a Chaos Dunk, and the blame has been placed on Barkley, seemingly the only man capable of performing this Verboten Jam.

It's hilarious, epic, and has a more in-depth battle system than your average RPG, so it's actually pretty fun.

Well... it doesn't hurt to have it here too I guess. :-D

Teewars!

Teewars!

teewars.thumbnail.png

What if Worms, Soldat, and Kirby had some sort of weird threesome? The result would be Teewars. The cutest little buggers with guns ever.

What is it?
This is a mutliplayer, 2D, stylized deathmatch game with five weapons. Characters look like they would fit in any Kirby game, except for the guns they carry around to blast each other. The levels are bright and cheerful, with an anthropomorphic sun grinning in the background as you rain death on your opponents below.

Pick up health, as well as armor in the level to keep dealing out death for longer. In addition to the ninja rope, characters also have a double jump to help them navigate the levels.

CURSOR*10
CURSOR*10

This may be the most incredible game you play this year.

It probably will, in fact be the most incredible flash game you play this year. And it's only about two minutes long.

It's called Cursor*10, and for what it's worth, it's my current contender for GoTY outright. Of course, we're only four days into 2008, but for what it's worth, the game is that good. You will be blown away by the simple genius of it.

Really.

I can't and won't spoil it for you, because that's part of the game itself. So just try it.

Aquaria COSTS MONEY!

Purchase and download full version here

So, there is this game by an independent company called Bit Blot. It is called Aquaria, and it looks gorgeous. It is an undersea side-scrolling Metroidvania-esque adventure that is going to be released on the PC and possibly other platforms in the future.
[EDIT: Ambrosia Software is handling the Mac port of the game. Glee!]
From wikipedia:
Aquaria is an upcoming 2D sidescrolling computer game by independent game company Bit Blot. It won the Seamus McNally grand prize from the Independent Games Festival in March 2007
So there isn't much there yet on Wikipedia. Very well, I will feed you information directly from Bit Blot.
Lonely, restless Naija has spent her entire life wrestling with questions about her identity. We join her as she takes her first steps away from the comfort of home and into new, potentially dangerous waters. Through exploration and magical combat, Naija will unearth the history of Aquaria and connect with beings lost in the depths of time. On the search to discover the fate of her people, her destiny and that of Aquaria's will be forever altered.

Did I mention it looks gorgeous?
screen03.jpg
Aquaria is an action-oriented, non-linear 2D side-scrolling game. Using an intuitive and fluid mouse control system, Naija can deftly swim through and explore a massive, handcrafted world that is teeming with undersea life. Along the way, she will encounter literally hundreds of different types of plants and animals and explore many ingame miles of hidden caves, lost ruins, and other strange places.

Retro Sonic

RETRO SONIC (beta) by Taxman

I consider this to be the best sonic fan game made so far (although Pro Sonic might give it a run for it's money when it's released). This is still a work in progress... this is the third public beta, I believe. Fucking FANTASTIC program, made by a bang up guy. He's the person who I've been turning to when I need help in making my own sonic engine. Fantastic work.

N

flashgamebigxh5.gif
N is an award-winning[1] freeware Adobe Flash computer game developed by Metanet Software. It was inspired in part by Lode Runner, Soldat, and other side-scrolling games, and features a realistic physics engine. The name is derived from "The Way of the Ninja," which is described in the background story. N features a ninja, who is the player-controlled character in the game.

It's definitely one of the harder games out there, but that might just be why I love it so. You really get a high when everything comes together juuuust right.

NIJUKIN The Game that Inspired this thread!

TYPE: Ninja Platformer
Size: Small
Price: Free of Course!

541195148_33c4c75f94.jpg

Download Link for Ninjukin:

Ninjukin is all about the gameplay. I think of it as how the 2d Ninja Gaiden should have played, with smooth transitions between all your ninja movements. Even with very basic controls, a huge variety of movements are at your disposal to help you traverse the small interconnected levels.

Controls:

Arrow Keys: Movement
Shift: Jump
Control: Sword Swipe

Moves:

Press against a wall, and then the opposite direction to run very fast.
Jump at a wall while pressing up to run up the wall a small distance.

The game is another language, but since there is no real story, this is a non issue. On the main menu when you open it up:

New Game
Load Game
Timed Tutorial (recommended!)
Protect the sleeping teacher (pointless?)

Download it, this game is absolutely awesome, and is great for 15 minute runs. It gets hard though, so you have been forewarned.

Zelda The Community
Zelda Classic
zeldaclassickx6ug7.jpg
Zelda Classic is a complete recreation of the original Legend of Zelda.
It started off as a simple clone of the game for the PC.
zeldasnap0002bj0.gif
However, over the past couple of years its scope and scale has grown much larger thanks to the creation of the Quest Editor. Now, the ZC engine can be used by Indy developers to customize their own dungeons, over-worlds, and stories.
locks01ss05me3.gif
Eventually a small community sprung up. The ZC engine was worked on to allow near complete customization of quests. New graphics, animations and enemies were added. Better"Tile Sets" allowed ZC to look more like Link to the Past or Link's Awakening.
1stqu02ss04oz9.gif
After eight years ZC is still pretty amazing. The engine has gotten to a point where completely original quests can be created. Hundreds of quests have been made and while only a few live up to Zelda standards there's a decent amount of fun to be had with this program.
3bd53db36mj8.gif
Quests You Should Try:
Lost Isle
Isle of the Winds
Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge
All three Castle Haunts(play them once you get some experience with custom quests)
Origin
Requiem for Hyrule(Personaly haven't played. It got great impressions though)

and more...
You really need to get an idea of what kind of quests you like before you try some of the other quests. Do you like classic style or remixed style? Do you want a more action oriented or puzzle oriented quests? Generally the ones listed above are the kind that anyone can like.

Development has slowed down a lot in the last couple of years even though a new version was just released. There's still a lot of limitations to the engine that I feel need to be worked on. Hopefully, if I get some more new blood in the community we'll start seeing Armageddon release more improvements.

Cave Story, or Doukutsu Monogatari, is a Japanese freeware PC side-scrolling platformer game developed by StudioPixel. It has been translated into English by Aeon Genesis Translations and will have an official translation script published sometime in the near future.

Punishment Incredibly Frustrating, Incredibly Fun
pun4.PNG

Punishment may make you cry. Why?

Because its hard. A seemingly basic platformer, the controls are rock solid. The graphics are fun. But if you fall, be prepared to often fall all the way back to the start. The world spins in 360 degrees, but gravity stays the same. Hit a political symbol, and you change color, and controls.

Ill say it right now. I love this game. In a hateful way.

But either way you should, and have to play this.

Masq Interactive Story. SO GOOD IT GETS LIMED
Andrew%20fight.jpg

Site: http://www.alteraction.com/

Even games with branching plots don't really qualify as interactive stories. Masq, a line-drawn Flash game, does, because of its sheer breadth. You're a fashion designer with a big show to stage in a few days. Everything that happens before then - the sex, death, betrayal, divorce and fame - is up to you.

Tom:"Your choices might be comparatively few at each juncture in Masq, but every one of them is tempting, interesting and has serious consequences. It leads to a complexity of plot and interaction that virtually no other game can match."

Plasma Pong Liquid Pong
3_plasma3_big.jpg

“Play Pong in a plasma-filled environment”

I've never played Pong while on an LSD trip, although if I did I'm sure it would be very much like Plasma Pong. The game takes the old classic and puts it into a psychodelic liquid enviroment, adding the colour and graphics that the original so desperately lacked. Plasma Pong plays very much like the version we know and love, only this time the ball is replaced by a wad of goo.

Plasma Pong has epic music, epic fluid dynamics gameplay, and epic graphics. One of the few indy games that require a pretty decent pc graphics card to get the best of.

And Yet it Moves Paper Graphics, Cool Gravity Switching Gameplay Platformer
http://www.andyetitmoves.at/
andyet.jpg

"And Yet It Moves" is basically a mixture between a jump and run and a puzzle game, with the extra ability to rotate the world. The player can run left, right and jump, but can also turn the world clockwise and counterclockwise by 90 degrees. When this happens physics works the following way: as soon as rotation starts all objects get frozen and after rotation objects continue to move with their velocities (direction and speed) they had before. With this ability you can move objects and yourself but also need to keep orientation and watch out for dangerous situations. Don't worry though, you' re made out of paper so you can die as often as you want to.

The overall goal is to get through this collage of ripped paper. And if you are quick - and don´t die too often - you might get into the highscore list.

XKobo Arcade Shooter
XKobo
about-shot.png
A rather old and obscure Linux game. You fly around in a little spaceship and blow up gigantic bases made of nodes and walls. Quite fun to make "Death star runs" where you try to destroy as little of the base as possible and just blow up the core. It plays like an arcade game that never surfaced in arcades or something.
There's a fairly faithful port for Windows called Wkobo.

There is also a souped up version called Kobo Deluxe. It looses some of the nostalgia for me, but may run more smoothly.

Hmm. There are a lot I know about (see my sig), but I'll only mention two really great ones.

    Ninjah
    The last scenario

No, I don't know where a working mirror for the latter game is. There are several, but they go up and down. Google around a bit. The author really needs to just stick up a website for it someplace.

Everyone should play I Wanna Be The Guy

    If you hate yourself

But it's actually kind of fun once you figure out how to get past a room

Hmm, there's a great puzzle/platformer game whose name I can't remember, but you play as this ball that bounces around getting various abilities. It's "In a Deep Dark Forest" or something like that. I don't remember the exact name. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

You haven't played Cave Story and you're not fixing that problem right now? What the hell is wrong with you?

    NIJUKIN The Naked Ninja Game
The jumping in the game is insanely hard to time. I'm finding the 3rd stage impossible to get through.

    How about Cloud?

I downloaded the game and played it for a few minutes, flying around and not having the slightest idea of what to do. I noticed you can grab the clouds and drag them with you, but what do you have to do with them?

It's a real bitch when you get stuck, though.

Does anybody remember how to get past level 7?
The letter-chute puzzle. I put the tracing paper over the letter and turned the light on, but I can't figure out what to do next.

I cannot remember the name of this game for the life of me but someone has to and I'd like to recommend it because I thought it was pretty fun. It's a point and click game where you're this guy that gets teleported to some kind of alien world. I know one of the puzzles involves messing with the stereo in your room so you can listen to a tape backwards and hear a subliminal message and there's some kind of crazy doctor's office. The ending is also really weird. Ugh, why can't I remember the name.

Yes, my favorite part of Another World was when you messed around with a stereo to listen to subliminal messages in a crazy doctor's room, with a point and click interface. Wait, that wasn't in Another World... In fact, that doesn't sound even remotely like Another World.

It does sound sort of like Crimson Room aside from the "teleported to an alien world" part.

well, sooooorrry mister. Didn't know it was such a touchy subject.

I've never played Another World. The synopsis he posted sounded somewhat like it. just trying to help the dude.

It's not Another World. I looked it up on wikipedia since I haven't played it but the premise sounds sort of similar so I can see that connection. I'm trying to remember more stuff to try and jog my memory though. I remember there was a burger joint and an electronics store that had almost nothing in it. I also remember a bank or office building that had a really nasty bathroom in it.

If you don't know what you're talking about, don't give advice. Simple as that.
