I found this B-game competition recently with many really weird games I haven't played yet. For those who played a good deal of those in the OP already, like me, that page is a goldmine of fresh insanity.

Of that list I played Poizoned Minds (short nihilistic IF), Mondo Medicals (insane first person maze puzzle by the creator of Clean Asia) and Betasuppe (a platformer you play with a text parser?!). While they do not really have much gameplay, they are really unique and worth checking out just for that.

Another game I found on my quest for insanity was POLYBIUS. There is an urban legend about an arcade game packed with subliminal messages and floating around on the internet and somebody decided to make it a real game. I don't understand the significance of the numbers on the central spinny thing yet, but playing it has been weird so far. Shame it isn't more puzzley, like the original legend promises.

N has absorbed a ridiculous amount of time these last couple of days. I got two columns down and I'm working on a third. I like unlocking different colors for my ninja but did they have to make the first unlockables pink and snot green? I imagine that I won't last much longer with this game since it just keeps on getting harder and harder. I'm a bit frustrated with the sheer amount of rocket guys and blue guys I'm having to face.

Nevertheless, I endorse it. Huge time waster.

To be fair N will make any gamer feel like they suck, sooner or later.

For instance not only have I gotten to the point where there are a ton of obstacles to avoid but now I've been getting only 30 seconds to do them.:x

I steal OPs, thats how i survive, because as your thread dies and gets locked and then... dies some more, it will be immortilized by this great and all incompassing thread. I will site you as the source though, thats my bads.

    Concerning the spelling of "Indie/Indy":

In Die sounds depressing, Indy sounds hip and is cool. AKA, shit.

This thread should not be on freaking page 12. D:

Actually, I wanted to ask TSR (or anyone who knows, for that matter) about Retro Sonic. In particular, I was hoping for an update on the project, since the site's info suggests that it hasn't been modified since August 2007, and everywhere I search turns up dead links, forums, or fairly restricted sites. The most i've been able to decipher is that Taxman has teamed up with somebody else (Sir Euan?) to make an even bigger fangame than before (Retro Sonic XG?), but then i'm not sure what to make of that since I haven't seen anything from Taxman himself. I know a lot of this stuff is kept under wraps, but if you can report on anything i'd appreciate it.

More importantly though, i've been curious about this SDK he was planning on releasing for every platform. Has he made any headway with that?

It hasn't, as far as I know.

I have been updating the OP with Cursor10 and Teewars and the like, but I wasn't going to bring it back until people want to talk about the games.

The OP has taken a while to make, so I hope it stays around.

    IRTT

Been Playing Teewars for 3/4/5/6 minute seshs, and i must say, it is excellent!

    and

I got a bit farther in Cavestory, does anyone know how long it usually takes to get through the first time?

Cursor*10 was pretty cool. Not very hard, but very amusing mechanics...and there's already a few mimics of it scattered around the net.

Regarding Cave Story, 6 hours with the machine gun sounds about right for a first run.

Also, if we're doing flash games...my sig *cough*

I don't see it in the first post, so I'm assuming this hasn't been posted yet. If it has been posted... oops.

Anyone who enjoyed Cave Story should check out the Demo/Preview for The Underside.

    Game info from the website:
    Story:
In the beginning, the World was flat, and it was pure, and it was good.
From atop his Almighty Throne, The Universal King looked upon the plain, white landscape.
He grabbed his Almighty Paintbrush and with one mighty swing of his arm...
stroked layers of Life onto the expansive canvas.

But then the World became full of corruption and evil, and so the Universal King decided to start anew.
And so with a mighty flip, he turned the World upside down, and so the top side became the Underside, and the bottom side became the Overside.
    And it was good.

The Overside's new inhabitants, the People, thrived for millions of years.
However, these People, made of dirt and originating from the under side of the World, were inherently dirty.
And so the world again became corrupt and evil.

So, The Universal King, now running out of sides to flip to decided that the World was beyond saving,
and so he decided to wipe it from existence.
But unable to destroy the World that he had so cherished and loved, he gave the World his ultimatum:
If he could find a single Person who could show him that the World had not completely fallen to evil,
    the World would be saved.

But if he could not find a reason to preserve his creation,
the World would be destroyed by his very hands.

    Will the world be saved?
Does such a Person truly exist?

    About the game:
The Underside is an exploration based action platformer in the vein (it's a pun~) of games like castlevania, metroid, and cave story. however, unlike most other games in this genre, the gameplay is driven more by plot than by free-roaming exploration (though the world is fully explorable).

the music is written by both Arthur Lee, and his close friend, j. michael brown. done in fruityloops using the 3xosc plugin as well as tweakbench's toad and peach vsts, the game's soundtrack has a real retro feel to it.

the game's plot revolves around a character named 'ip' who must escape from the underside, and maybe prevent the world from being destroyed while he's at it. the game's world, characters, plot strands, and dialogue are heavily inspired by earthbound, and are quirky, whimsical, and sometimes a little strange.

the gameplay is very fast based -- a lot more akin to games like megaman or metal slug rather than metroid or cave story in terms of pacing.

Indeed. Still fun, though. I think the one place where it might actually outshine Cave Story is in the dialogue/character department.

Some screenshots of mods made with the level editor:
Buddy's Nightmare - A short example mod made by the creator of the Underside.
    buddynightmare.jpg

The Story - One of the example mods made by a beta tester. I was surprised to hear that the creator of this one is 12 years old.
    thestory.jpg

Mega Malco Madness - a Cave Story ripoff/parody that I'm working on with a friend.
I don't know if we'll release it, since it reeks of Cave Story fanboyism. I don't think that's a word.
    malcostory.jpg

Edit: Also, Fish Quest is pretty fun. I'd hate to see what Hard Mode is like, though. I aaalmost killed the first boss, but it did something different when it's health was really low. It caused me to freak out and accidentally hit wrong buttons.

Ignore the last mod screenshot I posted. Because my friend and I did take most of those tiles from cave story.

The guy making The Underside has been asked that a million times. I think his answer is that the game is just heavily inspired by Cave Story. All of the graphics are "original", but a lot of them look like he just looked at the CS tiles and made extremely similar ones for his game. (Derek Yu did a side-by-side comparison a while back. I'd post the link, but I don't read TIGSource and I'm too lazy to look for it. Edit: Though, now that I've actually looked for it our of curiousity, it seems like it was taken down. Oh well.)

Even though it really does look like a Cave Story clone, I still want to play it. I want to wait for the full version to come out though, I don't want to play a preview then be stuck waiting to finish the story.

Same low resolution, same palette, same HUD, same damage numbers, same white explosions, gameplay similarities from charging elephants (except his are -bigger-!) to using a jetpack to fly horizontally across spikes, same doorways... heck, even the location is just a spin on Cave Story's.

If this is a different engine he sure spent a lot of time remaking CS.
