I'm playing Soldexus right now and loving it, it's hard but not impossible-hard, and the abilities and the shop are just addictive though I'm on the Volcanic Labyrinth right now and fucking hell is this hard
Soldexus is a very solid game. The controls might seem a bit weird at first, but once you get used to it, you will be ninja-ing through the castle. There is just one part with the secret blocking minigame I absolutely hate because blocking in this game is retarded.
Anybody played Raiden X on one of those Flash games sites?
Is it not awesome?
A couple of years ago I got the chance to play the original Raiden II in an arcade, and the experience was so sublime that I continue to think about it even today. So much so that I got online and found an .swf download for Raiden X. Because nobody has internet all the time.

A simple undersea action game.
Dive deep into the frigid abyss. Communicate with friendly creatures; avoid dangerous ones. What mystery lurks at the bottom?
This was created for the gamma 256 competition at kokoromi. In order to comply with the competition's rules, it's very short - about five minutes - and its native resolution is 36x64. It will scale to a more visible size for you, of course.
Supports Xbox 360 wired controllers. Be sure to have sound on.
Z on the keyboard or A on the Xbox 360 pad will activate a sonar pulse. Use this to interact with both friendly and unfriendly creatures.

Dream Diary
In Yume Nikki (or “Dream Diary”), you play a young girl who can delve into a bizarre, and sometimes extremely frightening, dreamworld in order to collect “effects” that can alter her appearance in the dream. Some of the effects also have abilities that can be used there. At (almost) any time, our heroine can wake herself up and return to her small, spartan apartment, where she can write in her diary (save), or play a simple minigame on the television.
I really like this game. The lack of dialogue or any “action” fills me with this strange sense of dread. I also like the contrast between the tiny apartment and the enormous dreamworld. And visually, the game really reminds me very much of Earthbound (especially Moonside!) and cactus, which is a pretty awesome and terrifying mix.
Download the English version of the game here (42 Mb), via Rapidshare. The download includes the RPGMaker runtime, as well as instructions on how to configure your computer’s language support to play the game. It’s a fairly painless process.
Thanks, Anarkex!

karoshi 2
three years ago, the gamer’s quarter published a feature on game concepts that, simply for sheer vehemence, needed to be made. my favorite was wes’s “suicide salaryman”: an open-ended game in the manner of grand theft auto in which the player’s goal was to kill herself in as many ways as possible. jesse venbrux eventually made the game as a puzzle platformer.
karoshi (”death from overwork”) is, for the most part, a traditional puzzle platform game. (i do like that the suicide salaryman is occasionally given a gun but not allowed to point it at himself.) karoshi 2 is one of the most intelligent games i have played in a long time.

Uniball http://www.uniball-central.net/
Think hockey/soccer/basketball with spaceships (everything's better with spaceships, right?).
Best of all it's multiplayer over the internet.
UniBall is a free 2D online multiplayer game. Originally created by C:\ (Josh Langley), who was a graphics designer for ARC and now works as an artist for PopCap Games, it is now owned and maintained by NickW (Nick Weihs), who also programmed BRChat, the companion chat program to UniBall who now works as a programmer for Insomniac Games in LA. In its most popular game mode, Hockey, players are given ships that can move, boost (move faster) for short distances, and shoot and receive balls. Players on opposing teams compete to be the first to score enough points to win the game.

Okay, this isn't ready to be played by other people yet, I'm still in the progress of designing stages and tweaking enemy hit points and bullet patterns, but I thought some people might be interested.
Description
The game is a top down shmup (yeah, I hate that phrase too, but it's become common parlance) where you control Samus' ship in the time between the events of Metroid II and Super Metroid. It's not a bullet-hell shmup, it's more like the Raiden games. It features a lot of classic weapons at the ship level, like the ice and wave (stackable!) beams. Weapons that don't appear until Super Metroid take the form of "cannons", which allow you to use the Spazer, Charge, and Plasma upgrades with Wave and Ice. The Varia shield reduces your ship's hitbox by half, and the Gravity engine allows faster movement through space.
Grapple Field, Energy pickups, Power Bombs and Missiles are scheduled for inclusion, but aren't in yet.
Background
This game is written in C# using XNA. I'm a designer first and programmer second, so I don't want to hear anyone complaining about managed code vs unmanaged code, or how I ought to have done this in C++.
I created all the graphics from scratch, with the exception of the Metroid logo and title screen. The sounds are all freeware sounds, except for the once I recorded by spitting at a microphone.
Story
The last metroid is in captivity.
The larva followed me to my ship, where I shepherded it into a containment cell. It trusts me, and I think that freezing it for the journey to Ceres would betray that trust. I need the metroid docile enough for safe handling.
Or at least, that's what I kept telling myself. The fact is, it's quiet out here, and its quiet chirps reassure me that I'm not the only living being out here. The metroid responds positively to my presence - when I enter the ship's hold, it floats to the front of the cell and hovers there quietly.
So when I discovered pirate heat signatures on intercept vector with SR388's orbital space, I made a promise that I would get the hatchling to Ceres station, where it would be safe from the pirates.
In addition to the pirates, my ship's scans also picked up something else - Chozo signatures that matched my ship's configuration! I praised Old Bird's foresight and strapped in - Ceres is a long way away, but I've got a child to keep safe.

Caveat: This is recorded at half size and half fps. Also, it's really blurry, and I can't figure out why Fraps won't record the sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHKW0bEBkAE
Once I've gotten a bit more work done on actual stages and thrown a boss or two into the mix, I'll try to figure out what I need to distribute it - right now distribution with XNA is a bit of a pain, since you need obscure DX9 components, .net framework files, and the XNA redistributable.
Edit: Figured out why there's no sound - turns out the cheap soundcard in my laptop can't produce and record at the same time. Also, new video.
Those stages better have nice backgrounds because for now, they just look ugly and plain :?
All in due time! Backgrounds are a low priority at the moment, but something you can't see from stills or the blurry video is that the current background scrolls so fast that it gives a really nice illusion of speed (especially when combined with the fact that the explosions from enemy deaths scroll away with the same speed). In the video all you can see is the larger stars, which are actually particles (not bg elements).
Something else you can't really see is that the screen shakes and the controller rumbles if you're using a 360 controller when you die.
looks great- one thing tho, shmups are usually better with bright bullets, esp bullet hell games and what you have here looks kinda halfway between those and regular shmups. eg, Tohou / DDP games have bright purple bullets that never match the background. just something to consider.
other than that it looks quite fun, and randomly generated should keep me on my toes. keep it up!
Antinumeric on
In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.
The game Batkin linked, "Uniball", reminded me of a game I play on and off.
It's by no means new, but it is free.
Continuum (AKA Subspace). Online, multiplayer top-down space shooter (asteroids style) with CTF, TDM and a ball game (Power Ball). There's also zones themed on Star Wars and Metal Gear. Can be very addicting. The only downside is the player base is not as big as it used to be, but there are still good numbers in the more popular "zones". Probably the best zone to start in is the "Chaos/League Zone", if there's people there, otherwise Power Ball. Unfortunately the other zones are "specialized" with different rules or tweaked gameplay. For example Extreme Games is almost 1-shot kills.
I would recommend it's prettier successor, "Cosmic Rift", but that game is dead, unlike Continuum.

Holy shit, I've been playing that game on and off for years. I'll bet I can even play it at work.
I'm playing FlaiL right now in the hopes of getting a review done for it. Just like N, I love the concept, love the art, love the levels, love the music, love the menus, cannot stand the gameplay. The physics are so floaty and awkward. It's beyond me why anyone would prefer them to something more solid and weighty. I'm more than half way through the game and I still can't grasp them, and at least 80% of my deaths are directly caused by the wonky physics, not the level design or the puzzles or my reaction speed, and that's just lame.
Anyone know of a game along the same line as these, but with more solid and weighty physics? (I'm thinking Megaman physics when compared to really loose Super Mario Bros. physics.)

I am just bitter because I excitedly entered thinking it was referring to Indiana Jones.
Therefore, any threads referring to Indiana jones are now Indie and threads like this are Indy.
And it is called parrying, but I don't care because the window of opportunity is really small.

But I'm glad people played it now! Once you beat it the first time, somehow, beating it again and again becomes as easy as pie.
