Could you do a seprate list or something for mac users? The only one I have is Torus Trooper and I have played it to death.

Just off the top of my head, I know that Cave Story, Battle for Wesnoth and N are all available to macs.

Toribash is also available for Macs, as well.

    Ah geez.
Battle for Wesnoth reminded me of Warlords III, once of my favorite TBS games, so while Wesnoth was downloading I poked around on the internet regarding both of them. Turns out theres a fix for Warlords crashing under XP, which had prevented me from playing it before.

Now I have two great TBS games and I want to play both and i have exams and stuff oh god D:
Also, I am very much up for any Game Ons involving Battle for Wesnoth.

Battle for Wesnoth multiplayer kickassery would be excellent. Looks like Aquaria's thread has gained momentum, so thats why i changed the thread title.

BfW is really polished I must say.

I'd be down for some Battle for Wesnoth multiplayer sometime, but my schedule is usually pretty busy. Weekends seem best for me, or any time after 7:00 PM Central. :D

    Oh god.

I'm trying out 5 Days a Stranger. I've been playing it for about an hour, and so far it's been pretty decent.

I haven't really been scared yet but certainly creeped out. The little things are starting to get to me. At first I was annoyed by how quiet the game is but I now realize that was done on purpose.
I just got my hands on a map of the house and it didn't take me long to notice the secret stair case. I did some exploring in the room where the staircase SHOULD be but that didn't yield anything so I dicked around, grabbing myself a metal detector. On the way back I passed through the room again with the missing staircase. Right when I was about to leave I started to hear something new. It was loud enough that it noticeably broke the eerie silence but quiet enough that I couldn't make out what it was. It eventually stopped so I left and reentered then waited, this time with the speakers cranked way up. Of course the noise popped up again and I got an ear full of VERY creepy whispering. CLICK CLICK CLICK, run away!!! At this point the creepy whispers are canceled out by another sound, me making footsteps while trying to get the hell out of there. I stop mid step to get a grip but the footstep sfx doesn't go away. My foodsteps continue on for a good 2-3 seconds as if there...was...a...second...pair.

Edit: got the name wrong, and yes I'm still freaked out...

I definitely like the atmosphere of trilby's notes better than any of the other games (though 7 days a skeptic is pretty damn creepy too). But I've never really liked the crazy twists the story takes in the last two games

There was once a small group of people who made excellent freeware games called Fallen Angel Industries (best known as FAIND). Unfortunately, they went down the drain, but you can still find their games on the net:

Tango Strike - a squad-based action/strategy game. It's kind of hard for me to explain because I haven't played it in a long time, but I really liked it.

Commando - a Contra-esque action game that's pretty difficult, though I'm sure veterans of the series (Contra, that is) won't have any trouble.

Machines of Destruction - a racing and car combat hybrid. It has online play, and it's pretty fun.

I'm surprised not to see this mentioned here yet, there's been a good amount of buzz around it recently.

    Passage

    screen.png

At the Montreal International Games Festival this year there was a contest to see who could create the best tiny (256x256 or smaller) game. There were many submissions, all of which you can download here. The one that's gotten the most people talking though is Passage.

Arrow keys move, F toggles full screen mode, and B adjusts how much the image is blown up.

The game takes about five minutes to complete, and I think it's definitely worth that much of your time. If you get bored a minute in keep going, it's worth seeing it through to the end.

Go in fresh. Don't read the spoiler until you've beaten it.
    Seriously
You start off controlling a man, then you meet a woman, a heart appears briefly on screen, then you control them both. All you can do really is walk forwards, and as you do time passes, and the couple ages. There's basically nothing to the gameplay, there's some obstacles to walk around, but it's not at all challenging (nor is it meant to be). As you continue to walk you watch the couple age. Eventually the woman dies, then soon after the man does and the game ends. I dunno, something about it touched me. The music probably helped with that.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.

I have recently downloaded cave story, and I'm pretty excited to try it, but every time I use it it very quickly crashes. You being games and technolgy, I am hoping you might be able to help.

It has done it three times in a row now, within seconds of reaching the gameplay screen (after starting a new game and reading the intro). The most recent two times it happened when I examined the health power-up to the right of where I began, cutting the text short mid-word (at different points in the phrase, though). The save point was fine, though. The first time however, it happened as I jumped back onto the middle platform after falling off, so I don't know whether that means anything.

I downloaded the pc version of the game from here: http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/
And the english patch from here: http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=cavestory
    My PC runs windows xp.

I am about as computer aware as any 17-year old, but I basically have no idea how to start troubleshooting this. If anyone could help that would be great.

    On Passage:
You can actually just avoid getting together with the girl and go it alone, which allows you to explore different areas. The "aim of the game", if you want to call it that, is to get the most points in your life time, and collecting chests is the best way to do this. Hunting for treasure. Having your wife with you means you can't go some places because the gaps are too small for one person to fit through. Read the creator's statement at his website.

Does the music sound weird or not play at all? I vaguely remember something about people having problems with the game due to the music. Try turning off the music/sound and seeing if that stops the crashing.

Just don't try to play without it. The music is essential to the game.

There doesn't seem to be a problem with the music. Snes era lo-fi sounds are what I am expecting to hear, and what I am hearing. The opening menu works fine, too.

When my pc finishes restarting (it's a full pc crash) I get an error report that a 'serious error occurred'.

EDIT: also, it's definitely not the translation patch in case that was in question. I re-downloaded it and tried it in japanese and it did exactly the same.
EDIT: actually, the opening menu isn't fine. I left it for a little while longer than I had before and it crashed. How can I turn off the music? Muting it/reducing the volume to nothing on the window doesn't work and the time I have to wait for the computer to wake up again is draining my patience after about 10 goes.

This one is a bit mind-bending at times: Yin Yang

    yingandyangfk7.png

The rules are simple: both Yin and Yang have to get to their respective flags. The white one can walk through black space, and the black one walks through white space. By pushing crates, you can create tunnels and walkways for the other character to use. It's a really cool idea, and it's done well.

There is a pretty good rpg maker freeware game made by a SA goon called Last Scenario. I've played the first two hours of it and it rocks.

Too bad the download link has been archived in the SA forum. The best mirror I've found after a quick search was this(Click Baixer). Of course it's only version 1.01, and I know there are newer versions. Does anyone know of a better link or is a goon?

Eventually I gave up getting it to work and installed it on my mac laptop. I probably should have mentioned that that was a possibility, but the bad speakers, game-unfriendly keyboard and the fact that it would display in a tiny window made me want to try hard with the family's pc.

Every once in awhile, a person with the talent to make good games and the passion for classics comes along and produces a great remake. Return to Wor is a beautiful isometric remake of Wizard of Wor, the 1980 classic by Midway. As a Worrior, your task is to hunt down monsters in a maze-like dungeon with a unified field disruption rifle and several useful abilities not found in the original.* Take a gander:

    rtoworfk4.jpg

Rarely does a remake of this caliber come around, anyone who enjoys classic arcade games will definitely like this one, even if they have never played Wizard of Wor.
